Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura
Usually at this time of year we go to Gran Canaria for a week. We are still going away this year but for medical reasons he cannot drink. We have looked at the quieter resorts on G.C. but we missed the boat on the cheapest deals, so at the price we are willing to pay we can only get Playa del Ingles.
Because we (well he- but I have to lend my support... a bit) won't be drinking we want to go somewhere a bit quieter. There are some good deals to Fuerteventura and I am wondering has anyone been and whats it like?
We are not 90 yet, so not too boring. Really what we want is sun and sand, some nice restaurants and bars (he will venture in when I am gagging for a drink!!!) and a few things to do to keep us occupied.
What do you think?!!

Firstly, Fuerteventura isn't to everyones taste, some have been and hated it, others like me have been going for over 10 years a couple of times a year and think it's a bit of heaven on earth. We're actually going in 4 1/2 weeks time. It is much quieter than the other Canary islands but you can still have a superb time depending on which resort you go to. You will probably have a choice of 3.

Right down in the south of the island about an hours transfer from the airport. The beaches here are stunning but the resort itself is a mainly German resort so the nightlife is geered up for them which basically means no clubs and not many bars, just loads of German restaurants.
CALETA DE FUSTE
This is only about 4 minutes from the airport so wherever you stay will get some aircraft noise. It has plenty of bars and restaurants and is probably classed as the second resort on the island. It has a man made beach which gives shelter from the wind that sometimes gets up a bit.
CORRALEJO
This is the main resort on the island and the one we always head to. It's the livliest resort on the island and if you want, you can drink until 5am in the square. It has loads of bars to suit every taste from Englsh type bars, to quiet Spanish bars to one of the best music venues you will find anywhere, The Rock Island Bar . It also has loads of nice restaurants, some of which are hidden away in side streets. It has a market twice a week and also has a new water park opened up, albeit a small one. A small taxi ride away is the superb sand dunes that will beat anything Maspalomas has.
I've been to Gran Canaria and Tenerife and would choose Fuerteventura anytime. The biggest drawback is the wind. It is windier than the other islands and when your out on the big beaches it can get up although at times it's just a really lovely coling breeze. Corralejo has 2 or 3 town beaches that don't get so windy and a thing to remember is the world windsurfing championships are held here during July.
If you want to have a better look at the island i have a few pictures or a thousand here and if you want to find out anything and everything about the island then the place to go is the forums at Fuerteventura.com . If i can be of any further help just give me a shout.

Thanks Gizmo. Thought I might hear from you!! Was on Fuerteventura.com and saw your usersname! Thought it might be the same person!!
At the mo we have the choice of the Broncemar Aparthotel in Caleta de Fuste or the Erika Apts in Carrralejo.
Am leaning towards the first one because the apartmants seem much better, but Corralejo seems the better resort, with the better beaches.
Do you know either of the apts, and would you recommend going for the better acoomodation or the better resort?
Access to drink is not an issue, he can't drink at all at moment. The less temptation probably the better, but saying that we don't want to be somewhere totally dead, and we will venture to the pubs at some stage. But good restaurants would be great.
Thanks a million for all your info!

I have heard the Broncemar are very good although i've never stayed down there. I 've heard of people who have stayed in them through the Fuertevenutra forum who say they are good. Do a search on there in the Hotels forum and you should turn up some results.
As for the Erika appts i'm sorry i can't give you any info at all, i can't even find out where they are located so they COULD be on the outside of town. I have heard of them but really can't remember a thing about them.
Personally i think i would go for the better accomadation. Caleta de Fuste is ok with loads of bars and restaurants and as i said the beach is sheltered although no where near as good as Corralejo. However as i said, if you intended to go out on to the big beaches (Olivia and flag beach) in corralejo it can get very windy up there at times.
Corralejo is just my prefered choice as we have friends up there and the bars and restaurants are better suited to what we want but if it's a choice of the better appts i think i would take them.

Thanks Gizmo. We decided on Correlajo in the end. The accommodation has good reviews, though it has a lower rating than the other one. And it is right on the beach which we like. Its quite small but really all we need at the end of the day is somewhere to put our head at night.
Reading up on the other site there seems more to do here and while it was said Caleta is a good base to explore the island we don't drive so can't rent a car.
What do you think the weather will be like? We are going on the 23rd.
Thanks again. You're a star.
