Sharm El Sheikh advice please- going by myself
Hi all,
Wanting to book myself a holiday for the summer and unfortunately I will be going alone. I have done the whole travelling thing in south east asia last year and this time I am looking to stay in a nice resort - have sort of decided (after reading posts on here) on Sharm El Sheikh (or other resorts on the Red Sea Riviera). The main things I am looking for are:
a) nice weather, pool and beaches
b) somewhere to lounge around by the pool and totally relax and catch some sun
c) NOT looking for any activities such as diving etc
d) local points of interest where I can pop to during the day together with markets and shops where I am sure I'll get harrassed, not looking to specifically buy anything but just wander around really
e) will probably do a day trip to see Pyramids and the like
However, as I've said, I am going on my own, and want to stay in a nice resort, budget is about 500-600 pounds- I am only planning on going for a week and will be flying from London. Does Sharm fit the above criteria to all those who have been and also has anyone ever holidayed there alone???? I don't want people to look at me like a freak. Also what else is there to do around there??? Also I understand it is expensive to eat at hotels all the time, so are there many other reputable restaurants around as an alternative? How expensive/cheap is it in general?

ALso have noticed most hotels charge a huge single supplement, are there any hotels in the area which have a low single supplement?

Sharm el-Sheikh in the summer months will be extremely hot, often too-hot-to-walk-on-the-sand hot and burn-in-an-instant hot. Check out the typical climate information at www.wunderground.com.
All the resorts/hotels have nice areas for lounging about.
Local points of interest are very few. Beyond the Ras Mohammed national marine life park (protected diving areas) and the very touristy souks, you'd have to travel to visit anything of cultural interest, ie the Saint Catherine's Monastery. You could also go on a desert trip to visit an oasis (eg Wadi Ain Kid) or the White Canyon or the Coloured Canyon. It's very relaxing to sleep out in the desert under the stars so you might fancy that for a change during your week.
Cairo is a 7-9 hour bus ride away from Sharm, or you have to take a flight.
The locals are well-used to foreigners by now, but beware of the gigolo type who prey most charmingly on unaccompanied women.

I have read your requests gibberish, and although Egypt would be a great place to go I am not sure that the Red Sea area would be best suited for you

a) anywhere in Egypt wil be HOT HOT HOT during the summer months - I was in Luxor last June (begining) and it was mid 30's then. Great for me although it can be TOO hot for most people. (Rep actually said we were lucky as it had hot the mid 40's the week earlier  )
c) The one great thing about Sharm IS the diving, and I think that if you are not interested in this you may get 'bored'
d/e) not a lot to do in Sharm to be honest except eat out in the evenings. Naama Bay is quite nice but I found the majority of shops to be quite touristy.
The reason I have said all this is because out of the 2 resorts I have been to I think Luxor would suit you a lot better. There are no beaches to laze at but the Nile is truly spectacular and most of the hotels have great pools. Things to do in abundance also, from shopping in the Souks, visiting the Valley of Death, Temples etc and to be honest I found it better than Sharm (even though I snorkel). The food is cheaper and more 'traditional' if you want that, and although you will probably get harassed a bit more than in Sharm, I would definately check out Luxor. Been there many times and can't rate the place high enough. BTW, I personally thought Le Meridien is the best hotel - quite modern, great pool, great food, on the Nile - bliss!
