majorca spain holiday- essentials??? tips please!
hi everyone!
me & my bf have just booked a 1week holiday to majorca, callas de mallorca in a few wks, just wondering, do they have mosquitoes? do i need to bring insect repellant cream??
also is there anything we should be aware of? like foods to avoid? to prevent food poisoning?? or water shall we buy bottled all the time or does it depend where we stay??
also i hear that we can only bring one bag on the plane, does it mean i can put my hand bag into a holdall does that count?? and what do we need to put into clear bags? or do they provide that at the airport? were goin to gatwick.

Anyway I haven't been to Majorca for years but I have been to Menorca recently which is very similar - island right next to Majorca!!!
I have never needed any insect repellant cream. You will be advised not to drink tap water but all of the supermarkets sell plenty of bottled water that you can buy.
You can only take one peice of hand luggage at the moment so if you are taking a here as well you will have to be able to fit it in you hand luggage bag. I think you will probably be okay to seperate them out once you have got through the scanners.
The only thing that you will need to put in clear bags will be any bottles of liquid that are over 60 mls or 100mls (only if you are putting them in your hand luggage) - sorry can't remember which size. I think it's easier just to put any liquids in your hold luggage now. We went from Gatwick and as you queue up at the scanners there was someone there with plastic bags. You can buy stuff after you've gone through the scanners though. We bought some perfume and aftershave in the Duty Free Shop.
Well I thinks that's everything you asked. Hope you have a lovely time and enjoy your books. I always take 3 books for a week away as well.

Looks like amillion's answered all your questions but just thought I'd add a couple of points.
I don't think you're likely to get bitten whilst you're out and about but I generally take one of those plug in mosquito repellents for in the room at night.
Like amillion said, I'd definitely stick to bottled water. I wouldn't be too worried about food poisoning etc tho, the resort is quite developed and lots of English food available if that's your thing.
Also, the beach is lovely so make sure you check that out! Like everywhere tho, the prices of drinks etc get dearer the closer the shops get to the beach so you might wanna pick up supplies en route if you're on a budget!

When I went to Mallorca about 5 years ago you couldn't drink the water out of the taps as it was slightly salty. Not sure if that was just the area we stayed (North) or if it's still the same now.

Basically, any liquids (and that includes perfume, lip balm etc) have to be in containers 100ml or smaller and all of these must fit into a plastic bag 20cm square which must seal. Sometimes they have them at the airpoert but not always so best to get your own sealable sarnie bags from the supermarket.
You can only take one bag on board with you so if you have a separate hangbag you'll have to put it in the holdall to go through security.
