Marmaris
Hello
Thinking of going away in September, and it's looking like it will probably be Turkey (due to price and also we've never been before and have heard good things!).
We are thinking probably Marmaris is a good place to go with it being central (ish) and having lots to do, although we certainly don't want to stay in any loud club 18-30 hotels or live above a bar/main road or anything (we're only 23 though...!).
I was just wondering whether anyone has been and could recommend:
- decent hotels (nothing hugely expensive though!) - we have had problems when browsing through the hotels as the recommendations/reviews vary so much and in the space of 5 reviews a hotel gets scores varying between 1/10 and 10/10 - just don't know who to believe!
- things to do in Marmaris and any hidden gems/tips
- any other pearls of wisdom!
We have looked at the Ideal Pearl hotel but it seems a tad expensive (we missed the one cheap deal) considering you can get other hotels for half the price - but it looks like a nice hotel and I am thinking it may be worth it. The problem is not really the price of the hotel actually (it's only £14/night!!!) but the flights - we can only get flights costing around £200, and so therefore it bumps up the price of the holiday, then you have all the extras they lump on.
We are unable to find any cheap flights to Dalaman whatsoever, so we're thinking probably a package deal is best

ive been and i liked it, but cant really recommend a hotel really.
we were 19 and just did it because we were bored, and had friends there, who got us a place to stay on the cheap.

Well I booked my holiday to Marmaris today :D
We're going in September - can't wait! It's made me really cheerful today as I am having such a naff day.
Any tips and advice still very much appreciated and welcome!
I have heard a few times about the shop owners being pushy - that could get a bit annoying and I am rubbish at looking all stern and bolshing past people :cmdunno:

Hi okey dokey
I have been to Marmaris two years on the trot and I love it! Each time we have been we have stayed at the Turquoise Apartments in Marmaris.
The turkish people are the nicest people I have ever met in my life. It is very rare that you'll be hasseled and as long as you give a firm "No thank you".
I could write forever about it so I'll narrow down to good points and bad points.
Good Points
Turkish People - Waiters, Barmen, Shopkeepers, they are all so friendly and love to hear about England. I'm sure there is the odd sleazy one but no more so than Spain and Greece!
Price - Marmaris is so cheap. Alot of people complain that its not as cheap as it used to be, which it isn't, however if you compare the prices to other med resorts you will see a big difference. For example we had one meal which cost us £8 each which included starters, mains, bottle of wine and Beers. This is the average price for a meal out (Major diet needed when I got back  )
Trips - I would reccomend the boat trips straight away. Again SO cheap. Ours cost us around £6 each and that was for a all day boat trip around the coast, stopping over at different beaches and feeding fish etc and a gorgous lunnch. Make sure you shop around and haggle down the price as there are 100's of boats doing these trips and the prices vary. I would also recommend a turkish bath at the start of your holiday to make you tan quicker. Jeep safari is another great value all day trip where you are taken into the mountains in open top jeeps and taken to all different sites such as waterfalls, real turkish villages, deserted beaches - again with lunch cost us around £10 each.
Food - The food is fab! I have never had a bad meal anywhere there, infact its Ive had some of the best meals I have ever had in Marmaris.
Restaurants to look out for - The Garden, Taj Mahal (great indian - my boyfriend still craves it now a year on  ) and Cal Aysha
I love that in Marmaris you have little areas all next to each other, for example theres the Marina with lots of lovely restaurants and bars overlooking all the yaghts(sp?), the beachfront - again lined with bars and restaurants, bar street (which is at the back of the beachfront) I like that the 'clubby' area is set back a little from all the restaurants so you dont feel like your slap bang in the middle of all the partying!
Bad Points
The beach isnt the best - very narrow, however if you go on a boat trip then you get to visit all the little quieter beaches instead, or you could take the bus (Dolmus) to the resort next door which is called Icmeler which is nicer.
The transfer from Dalaman airport takes about two hours - which isnt so bad in itself (and well worth it) but you have to stop for a 10 minute break at some little petrol station with astromically high prices!!
Thats about it though for bad points!
I'm very jelous, you'll have a brilliant time!!!!:D

Thanks so much for that info! I am at work at the moment but have printed it off to have a proper read when I get home and for future reference :D
Quick question about the Turkish bath - it helps you tan quicker?!
Didn't realise that! Not that my holiday is all about the tanning, but I find I tan so much quicker if I have caught the sun over here first, and we will probably go to a Turkish bath at some point, so if this is true I will persuade the bf to go near the start! Did you notice a difference then?
Also the food - did you happen to notice whether it was well catered for veggies?! I am veggie (boyf isn't) and I'm pretty sure it'll be alright, just wanted to check! I once went to a place in Greece, where I can usually eat fine, and there was only a choice of omelettes all week :(
I am so excited to be honest as the hotel looks good and it's our first proper holiday together :D
