HI Bugbabe
Well I have been to Tenerife and Lanzarote.
Tenerife we went to a couple of years ago and we stayed in Playa de las Americas which is the main resort. We stayed at the far end of Americas heading towards Los Cristianos which is a nice resort.
I would say it was lovely where we stayed, all designer shops and very pretty but we headed into the main part of Americas one day and it was very very chavvy.
Cheap shops and bars!
It was really tacky and there is an area (in Americas) thats well known for drinking and trouble (can't remember the name) but we stayed away from there.
I really liked Tenerife and would def go back.
We went to Lanzarote about 9 years ago and I liked it there too....its smaller than Tenerife.
I would not say it was particulary chavvy but that was 9 years ago!
Hope this helps

Spanish Blackpool? No offence to your friend but I think that is a slight generalisation and exageration lol.
There is one road, called The Strip/Veronicas in Las Americas, Tenerife that is full of bars and clubs so which can attract the 18-30 posse. That is the only area I would not bother with. Las Americas in general has had a huge redevelopment in the past 5 years and is full of designer shops and lovely smart bars/hotels now. As for the rest of Tenerife there's some lovely little places like Los Gigantes, Playa Pariso, Torviscas, Fanabe Bay, Puerto Colon, Playa Del Duque being my favourite.
Gran Canaria I would say the best resorts are Maspalomas and Morgan, Lanzarote I've never been to. Fuertoventura (sp) is lovely but not a lot going on but good for families,Gomera and all the other islands are tiny and relaxing, not a lot there but nice.

I've been to 4 of the Canary Islands, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura which are classified as the main ones although there are others like La Palma, La Gomera and Hierro.
The thing with the Canaries is the main 4 are very English orientated simply because each island has a big ex pat community and a great many English people visit the islands. They are about a 4 hour flight from England and your virtually guaranteed sun all year round with temperatures at a minimum 70F, even in the winter.
Tenerife
Some people love it, some hate it. Los Cristianos isn't too bad, although it's the only time we have experienced crime when our son and his friend had knives pulled on them in an attempt to rob them as they were window shopping. It's where we stayed and it's about 2 miles from Play de las Americas. Playa de las Americas? Now this is like Blackpool but a lot worse. It has a world famous strip of bars called the Veronicas which was featured in an ITV club reps type programme. It is like the wild west down there after 12pm where anything goes and it was normally us back to Los Cristianos.
Gran Canaria
Just a little less busier than Tenerife. We stayed in Playa del Ingles which is split up into small areas, like the Gay centre (yumbo) the English centre, the Irish centre and of course the clubby centre with places like Linekers bar. I actually enjoyed the variety of Playa del Ingles but again it is still a bit like Blackpool with plenty of English clubs and bars.
Lanzarote
We've only been over for day trips from a neighbouring island to Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen. Playa Blanca is quiet and not a bad resort and you won't find any loud clubs and bars here but go a few miles up the coast and you have maybe the main resort of the island, Puerto del Carmen where you WILL find the loud bars, cheap English food and late nights.
Fuerteventura
Ok, i'm going to have to TRY and be really un biased here and write some comments about this island. We've been going here for 14 years 3 or 4 times a year. The main resort is Corralejo which is about 30 minutes from the airport and is where we stay. It has stunning beaches just outside the town although as they are unsheltered, at times, they can get windy. From the small port you can take a 15 minute boat ride to Lanzarote if you fancy a day trip on the sea cat. The town again has it's share of English bars but not so many of the cheap English restaurants. There is a small area where you can drink 'til late but there are no clubs and mad bars here.
The second resort is Caleta de Fuste which is about 5 minutes from the airport. It's less busy than Corralejo but seems to have a lot more English food places, it also has a man made beach rather than one thats been there for hundreds of years as it's a purpose built resort.
The final area is Jandia, this resort is very German in it's restaurants, bars and just about everything else but it has some stunning beaches and is about an hour and 20 minutes drive from the airport.
I would hate to point you to any particular island as each has it's own drawbacks and each has it's own good points but i hope all this helps.

It looked rough and that was in the daytime.
I hate places like that but I must admit we liked Playa De Las Americas as we stayed at the far end which is much nicer. I loved the designer shops and the massive Zara as they had lovely clothes and so much cheaper than UK prices.
