Recommendations for Madrid?
 Hi ladies,
I'm off to Madrid in July (it'll be hot I know!) with 12-14 girlie mates. Has anyone got any recommendations on where to go and what to do?
Pretty much planning on doing the bus tour on the first day to get our bearings and stuff but some restaurant/bar recommendations would go down well.
Thank you! x

As for what to do... I was only there for a weekend myself, so I don't have a whole itinerary to give you. Make sure that if you're looking for places to eat, that you keep an eye out for any "Menú del día" on offer, which is three or four courses + water/wine for a set price... usually very cheap and cheerful!

Here are some tips my friend Miguel gave me, I would personally recommend Palacio de gavirios - a wicked club in a converted palace and a churros place around teh corner from it open all night called chocolateria san gines:
I heard the "Moma" in "plaza de Colon" is very cool.
Personally, I like the area around Plaza de Santa Ana, where you can grab a bite, have a drink, move on to another bar... there's one called Amor Brujo andwhich is good.
In terms of restaurants, it depends what she's after. Ambiance, classic dishes, meat, fish...
Anyway, a couple of suggestions. If it's meat, after shopping in Goya, I recommend El Buey, great meat cooked on a ceramic stone by yourself. General Pardinas, nearly on the corner with Goya.
For fish, there's another place nearby called 'La Trainera', it has great fish and seafood.
There are lots of small qiurky restaurants, one is called La Vaca Veronica, you should be able it find iton internet, and the area is nice for a walk.
Anyway, it's difficult not to eat well and have good drinks in Madrid...
Also, it's importnat to note that the nickname for madrilenos is "cats", mainly becase we always come out at night. lunch around 2.30 and dinner never before 9:30 or 10.
Take care and stay up till late, it's worth it. Go with the flow and ask for recommendations, people will love that and places change rapidly.
Cheers,
Miguel

Hey there,
I used to live in Madrid, in the Goya area, I was there for about a year. Its a totally lush city, you're going to love it! Recommended places to go if you're up for some serious clubbing action is the club at Principe Pio metro station, its outside, at the bottom of the steps and if I remember rightly its named after a sports theme...something to do with futbol lol....but the night's called urban passion and theres a lot of R&B, Reggaton Spanish influenced music. Drinks are pricey but its worth checking out for a once in a lifetime! Be warned though, nothing gets going in the city until around midnight or later, and often goes on until around 6am!
Also you could go to the Palacio Gaviria, a massive nightclub with plenty of different rooms & music, I found it a bit too crowded and trendy for my liking but its still good fun!
Shopping is a must, I'd recommend Goya for having a mooch round the designer stores and also there's a shopping centre open above Principe Pio metro station which has a decent food court and some cool shops as well (mango, zara, bershka) etc
If you're out and about around Sol (the main shopping/tourist centre of the city) be really careful with your purse, and also be careful on some of the surrounding streets on the way up to Gran Via from Sol on a night time, there's loads of prostitutes kicking about there usually! (Gran Via & calle Fuencarral has a lot of good shops as well and is cool to wander along)
A personal favourite of mine is a bar on calle General Pardinas (Off Goya) where I used to live, its called Cherry (if its still open), and it serves really nice tapas and proper meals through the day which are relatively well priced compared to some restaraunts in the city centre, I'd definitely recommend it.
God I'm all nostalgic now!!! anyway hope that helps, I could probs think of a lot more but if you need any further advice just let me know!
