Santorini
  Hi

I'm off to Santorini this summer (Kamari to be precise).....

Has anyone else been and if so what did you think? Any nice restaurant/taverna reccomendations?

We are staying at the Acqua Vatos hotel - looks really nice on the website but any reviews would be fab!

Thanks V x

I was very young when I went, but I loved it and really want to go back! My mum loves it too (think she's been twice)
It was beautiful weather, gorgeous beaches (although bit weird with the black sand)
Cant remember much about what we did but do remember amazing food (great breakfast pancakes from a wee place that had Mama's in the name!) and very frienly people. Our accommodation was probably mid price and wanst that great, wasnt the cleanest and it was stifling hot at night.

Santorini is amazing and is my true "heaven on earth" !!! We have been 5 times !!! It's an island of extraordinary beauty like nowhere else.
Whether you arrive by air or sea you are immediately struck by the volcanic cliffs of red brown rock topped by clusters of gleaming white sugar cube homes and villages . It has little in the way of vegetation except tomatoes and vines, and has black sand thanks to the volcanic activity in years gone by.
You can get around it in a day by car or bike and you will find local buses are easy and cheap, as are taxis.
The main resort Fira is on the side overlooking the volcanic caldera and is stunning (with prices to match!!) try little places in the backstreets for food and drinks as they are less expensive, there are several clubs there too if yu fancy it!
Kamari and Perissa are on the shallower flatter side of the isle and are both good resorts with plenty to do, we tend to stay in the Perivolos end of Perissa so I can only really speak for food places at Perissa: Boss / Gods Garden and Lava are excellent as is Yazz which is really chilled and brilliant for whiling away an evening and people watching - with a plentiful supply of cocktails!
Outside the resort if you fancy a posh meal you could visit Pyrgos and eat at Pyrgos Taverna - one of the top 3 eateries on the island! It has a panoramic view of the entire island and is made in a converted windmill.
The village of Oia is beautiful , it clings to the caldera edge and is famed for its sunsets, busloads of tourits descend on it at teatime and take up vantage points to watch the sun slowly sink down . The Blue Wave is a good place there on the outskirts of the village, charcoal barbequed food is available and there is a good atmosphere!
Down south at Akrotiri you can also get a view of the sunset and it's less expensive to eat : Panorama do great breakfasts and for evening meals try Mama Thira on the road to the lighthouse is excellent with a terrace overlooking the caldera.
Make sure you do the volcano boat trip as it's well worth it!
This http://www.santorini.gr-santorini.com/restaurants/ site might also help you!
Hope you have a brill time - I'm so jealous!! GT x

We stayed in kamari approx 3 years ago, stayed in an apartment, can't remember the name. We went in september and the weather was a bit poor though, although the beaches were empty. Because only a few holiday companies fly there, we found it less British than other greek islands, which was refreshing. There is a sort of 'promenade' behind the beach and all the shops and restaurants stretch along that. I can't remember the name of any restaurants, but if facing the sea you walk along the 'promenade' (what word am I unsuccessfully thinking of??) to the right, near the end, there is a mediterranean restaurant with big white umbrella type things covering the area. The tables are on the left, and the restaurant is to the right of the road. I really can't remember its name, but the food was fantastic. If you keep walking, at the end is a little ice cream parlour. We stopped there one night for irish coffees and baklava, and it was gorgeous, would highly recommend.

Just remembered Kamari has lots of different restaurants of all types of foods - even an Indian and a Chinese if you fancy it!
You can get a boat round the headland to Perissa - he does the trip several times morning and afternoon - takes about 10 mins but is a bit choppy at times, otherwise you can walk over the hill via Ancient Thira ( a bus will take you some of the way from Kamari) and down the other side to Perissa, if you plan to do that do it early morning , before it gets too hot and take planty of water as it is a bit of a pull and there is little shade.
