where to go? Japan, America?....
I'm going on holiday for my 21st birthday (in november..)and have always wanted to go to Japan! But dont know anyone who's ever been, so i'd really like the 'dont go to that part!" and "you cant come to japan without seeing this..." kinda advise lol..

which part of japan would be best? .... i think maybe tokyo as i assume there will be more things to do there... but would it just be like me going shopping in my home town (birmingham lol)

what about New york? or california (if so, which part? i know, LA is supossed to be awfull so i'll stay clear of that) any other suggestions are greatly recieved!!

doesnt have to be a beach holiday.. any ideas?
xx

Hello
I've been to everywhere you mention - fire away with your questions!
I've done Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan, plus assorted trips from both centres. Also been to New York and quite a lot of California.
If you give me an idea of what you want to do then I can help you more...

Hi there,
I'm going to Japan in a few weeks' time, and I've also been to the East Coast of the USA.
I guess it really depends on what kind of things you like doing on a holiday. I chose Japan this time because I really like to go to different places and experience different cultures and because I love sushi! I like to do and see things when I'm on holiday and am not into lying on a beach.
Decide what kind of things are most important to you on your holiday. And have fun planning! If you do go for Japan, drop me a line with any questions. I've been hanging out on travel forums and reading guidebooks for weeks!

ooo yay :) well... holiday wise i dont want to just sit on a beach all the time either, i wanted to go to Japan for the culture and also cuz i love their fashion, and also the cute stuff you can buy from there that you cant here, such as the Sanrio collection, and tare panda's (check my avatar pic lol) etc lol (i know that there is a Sanrio 'world' somewhere.... not important to go...but if its near by it would be good)
i dont really want to be just in the city all the time as that would be like just being here! i'd also see nice scenery etc (im in love with nature, waterfalls, lakes etc etc!) without getting another plane! can u do both??
also, its my 21st so the odd drink would be nice lol, is it good nightlife?
oh and whats the best month to go in? weather wise...

so if i go to tokyo, firstly, is it an expensive place to shop? is it expensive to do the trips out to other places? what are the close places like??... is there any places i should avoid? and also, the language barrier, are there many english speaking people in the shops/tourist attractions etc.......

Spacegal maybe i should buy a book, can you recomend one please?

california wise.......

i have no ideas on what to ask... maybe if you could just tell me where you went and what you did and if it was any good?

basically here are my needs lol..

shopping
scenary
nice people
culture (only relevent to japan really i supose!)
day trip to a beach is nice but not nessesary.

sorry guys for the amazingly long post!!!

It sounds like you would really like both places! Can't speak from experience about Japan yet, but we're certainly doing a mixture of cities and more rural areas and we'll be travelling by train.
We'll be in Tokyo for four nights, then staying on an island called Miyajima for a couple of nights. Then we go to Kyoto - another big city but known for its temples and Geisha culture. We're also staying in the Japanese Alps for two nights, staying in a traditional ryokan or Japanese inn, to get a feel for the old style Japan.
We booked our travel through a company called Audley travel who specialise in arranging tailored trips. It may be worth looking at their website and downloading/asking for brochures, just to start getting some ideas of the kind of things you can do/see.
The best times of year to go are apparently Spring (when we're going) and Autumn. It can get really too hot in thr cities in the summer. And as with all trips, you get more choice if you book well ahaed of time.
From what I've read on forums etc speaking English isn't too much of a problem in big cities like Tokyo. I've been teaching myself a little, so I'll report back on how easy I found it. can't read a word though!

California -
I did a 2 week fly drive Los Angeles, Las Vegas, through Yosemite to San Francisco. Booked flights on the internet an a couple of nights accomodation then just pitched up and found motels along the road.

Favourite place was definitely San Francisco (went back there for a week the following year). Tonnes to see and do from theme parks to the Grand Canyon. Shopping galore, great beaches, beautiful scenery... just about everything you could want I reckon.

Guidebooks wise Lonely Planet and The Dorling Kindersley Eye Witness guides are a good place to start. Also check out the Lonely Planet Thorntree forum http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com and tripadvisor.com, particularly the forums http://www.tripadvisor.com/.

Sorry got to run now, off to friend's for the weekend!
