possible holiday in florida
possible holiday in florida
hi guys
me and the OH are thinking about going to florida for 2 weeks in June, as its just after i finish uni and just before the graduation ceremonys.
obv i wanna do disney, busch gardens, seaworld, universal etc but every trip im looking on the intervet says you have to include car hire which is what concerns me.
i'm 22 and have only had my license for a year and really dont feel comfortable driving in a different country, to places i dont know, and on the other side of the road. Also it seems to be an extra $20 a day cos im under 25, so i dont wanna have to pay about £350 for the car hire + £150 odd quid in surcharges cos of my age.
is it vital that we have a car there? i know they say you should, but all i wanna do is stay in the hotel by the pool and go to the major tourist attractions - surely the big tourist places would have shuttle buses?

I have been to Florida many times and I would say that car hire is a must. However, as you said that you don't feel confident driving in another county, and I don't blame you, I wouldn't bother. Also, when you are under 25 they charge you more and I don't think it is worth the extra expense.
Some hotels on International Drive offer a shuttle bus service to Disney and Universal for free. Once you are in Disney you can get on the Disney buses which take you between the parks for free. Also you said you fancied going to Busch gardens. This is quite a bit away from the Orlando area, some websites offer park tickets with transport included into the price. I'll have a look and see if I can see anything for Busch Gardens.
Will this be you first time over in Florida?
ETA: I have just been on this website http://www.virginholidays.co.uk/extr...busch_gardens/
(sorry for the long link!)
Basically it says that if you buy a 2 park ticket for Busch Gardens and Seaworld then you can take the free shuttle bus from Orlando down to Busch Gardens.

yeh this is gonna be my first time going. i really really wanna go, but like i say im just worried about the driving issue. so you think then that it is possible to go without the car hire? i guess worst comes to worst, we can get there, then decide we need a car and hire one over there....

You will definitely need a car I'm afraid, there isn't much of a public transport system in Orlando. The only option would be to stay in a hotel which offers a shuttle bus they don't tend to offer them for all of the parks.
My husband and I have been to the US many times, the first time together was when we were 21 and he was nervous about driving over there. To be honest the roads are so big and the cars are left hand drive so you'll be fine.
Some hire companies will charge more if you are under 25 but try and find one that includes all the extras in your bill so you don't have to pay charges locally. We tend to use www.holidayautos.co.uk they are competitive.

well i've just been to the travel agent and the lady said as long as we are near I-Drive we should be ok without one, in fact she said she had done it without a car.
i know some of the attractions are out of the way, but to be honest hiring a taxi is going to be much cheaper than hiring a car for 2 weeks!
