Need an adventure to save my sanity!!

Need an adventure to save my sanity!!
Sorry this is all going to be a bit vague. Last year I split up with my boyfriend of 8 and a half years which as you can imagine was really tough. I am fed up of my job and I really want 2007 to be the year I do something a bit different and stop floating along in life!!!
I think I want to travel, it will probably be by myself and I'd like it to be as soon as possible this year.
However I have never really travelled before so I am looking for ideas, where would be safe for a female to go and relatively cheap. I did think about going to Oz to work but I am too old (sob) to get a working visa.
I would really appeciate any ideas/opinions you have.
Thanks xx

Hi LuvSunshine,
Firstly I'm sorry to hear about your split with your boyfriend :( I hope you are doing ok.
I'm 23 and I've hardly travelled anywhere in this amazing world of ours. I would absolutely love to go travelling, but I'm scared about going on my own, and my friends don't have money etc etc.
I am still strongly considering going on one of those escorted tours. For example, my brother went to Thailand with Gecko last year for 3 weeks, and he absolutely loved it. Everything was taken care of!
Another well known company is STA Travel. I've enquired with them, and they seem very helpful. They sell a round the world ticket, which is exceptional value for money, you just pick the destinations.
They also do adventure trips that are escorted, which sound amazing.
See STA Travel's website here
Another very useful website is Lonely Planet
I would absolutely love to just leave right now and go travelling, sadly, I've been promoted, and am starting my new position in a few weeks, so not a good time :boohoo:
There are some very helpful baggers in this forum, that have helped me when I was making enquires for travelling to New Zealand. So, I'm sure other people will give you some great ideas.
South East Asia/ Australia is a top destination for travellers.
A book that I recommend is the Rough Guide book to first time around the wrold. This is one of the best travel books I've ever read.
I wish you the best of luck with travelling. I'm very envious of you!
Let me know when you've booked something!

Hi!
What do you mean by "never really travelled before"?
Do you know Europe? Because if you still donīt my advise would be for you to get to know the major cities in Europe by doing something such as the Inter Rail (train pass where you get to travel for a month to anyplace and without any miles limit).
Europe has a lot to offer! Great museums, cities, dif. places...donīt get the illusion that you know it all...
It wouldnīt be the hassle of planing a really long distance trip and you get to know lots of people in trains, hostels, etc.
I totally recommend this for someone who hasnīt travelled a lot yet. ;)

LS, sorry to hear about your recent difficulties, but its great to hear you're considering travelling! In my opinion there is nothing quite as exciting as planning your own big adventure. Once you start researching all the options that are available to you you realise the world really is your 'oyster' and get quite excited by it all (as you will probably tell by the rest of my post!)
It seems overwhelming at first but what I found was that the more research you do (www.gapyear.com is great, especially the message boards; they have one specially for 'older' gappers) and the more you read other peoples stories you begin to think "if they can do it so can i" and you grow in confidence.
And i can't rave enough about going travelling alone!!!! gapyear.com also has lots of sections on lone female travel which will soon put your mind at rest on any safety worries you may have.
Yeah so just start doing some research on the websites already mentioned, have an open mind and see what you are drawn to. Maybe Interrailing. Or doing a volunteer placement helping AIDS victims in south africa? Or teaching English in Vietnam? Or going on safari and combining it with some animal conservation? Or your own tailor made round the world trip? There are soooooo many possibilites!
As for me..I'm doing 3 weeks of Inter-railing around Eastern Europe this summer. My planned route takes in Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland. Then next year I am applying to the JET scheme to hopefully spend a year teaching in Japan. Failing that i'm going round the world, to HK, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Aus, NZ, Fiji & USA.
Good luck!
Ally
