Sights that took your breath away
Sights that took your breath away
1 Attachment(s) Ive been away travelling a few times, not extensively but Ive only seen 2 things that actually took my breath away. Ive seen things i am amazed by, but few to the point where you almost cant breathe.
The first was trekking in the jungle in northern Thailand, and we reached the top of the mountain and looked out across the mountain range and when i looked up and saw it, it took me totally by surprise. Id been holding on to my bamboo cane for dear life and then suddenly this view appeared (see pic - not sure if i have attached it correctly)
the 2nd was on safari in Kenya, we stopped at the Voi Lodge, and walked to the lookout point. The view was like nothing i could ever imagine - you could see the mountains from Tanzania all the way through Tsavo and to eastern Kenya. There was a swimming pool on the side of the cliff overlooking this valley into the National Park, and it was completely silent, and suddenly you realise what a big fat nothing you REALLY are. Very humbling.
Does anyone else have any experiences that had this effect? If so, where were you? I want ideas of where to go next

I don't have any photos but the one that immediately springs to mind is Zion National Park in Utah.
Having parked up my friend and I walked into the visitor centre, had a look around and then wandered out of the doors at the back. The view was indescribable. All those words - "breathtaking", "amazing", "awe-inspiring" - fall pathetically short when trying to describe the beauty and grandeur of the place. We were both, literally, speechless for several minutes. It's the kind of beauty and majesty that makes you gasp - it really does take your breath away. It instils the kind of emotions you can't imagine feeling just from being somewhere.
We'd been previously to the Grand Canyon and to Bryce Canyon, both of which are astounding places, but Zion really was the icing on the cake. If you Google it there are images aplenty but, to be honest, not one of them does the place the slightest bit of justice. If I had months to live, this is where I'd choose to live out my days. To me, it is heaven on earth.
ETA: http://www.terragalleria.com/parks/np.zion.all.html has some beautiful images of the park, but they still don't do it justice. The very first picture, of the Court of the Patriarchs, is part of what you see when you step out of the back of the visitor centre.

i was thinking of the National Parks as they were recommended to me by a couple i met on safari - those pics look incredible. I know what you mean about them not doing it justice, ive taken video panaramas of places and trying to describe it when you show people the video is frustrating
We were both, literally, speechless for several minutes.
Thats what i want!!

NAtoPMT your pic looks amazing. I've never been to the jungle like that but would love to.
For me I think a place that will always stay with me is the Rockies in Banff national park Canada. I've always loved mountains but the Rockies are just awe-inspiring. I was lucky to live in Banff for the whole of one summer but I still just walked around the whole time in a dream gazing at the views.
Second place would have to be the Alhambra in Granada, specifically the from the Albaicin across to the Alhambra at sunset with the mountain backdrop:

Looks just like a fairytale castle, and reminds me of a particularly romantic frenzied kiss with a Swiss man but that's another story... :o

We went in September, just after Labour Day. It was perfect as it was still summery enough to be warm but the colours were starting to change. We'd hired a convertible sports car and felt like Thelma & Louise. We thought we were the bees' knees!
We did Zion as part of a road trip which started and ended in Las Vegas and which took in the Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and loads of other places in between, and some of Route 66. We even ended up on the road that goes past Area 51 and got "buzzed" by an F16 which was a real Mulder & Scully moment  ! I had the best time of my life. I've posted about it before but what I wouldn't give to have that whole trip over again.
