I've never flown before, so some stupid questions
I'm sorry asking such stupid questions but i've never flown before and I don't know the answers.
At the end of this month i'm flying home for a long weekend, it's only an internal flight from Cardiff to Newquay and back so about 30 minutes.
Ok, first things first i've got a fair few piercings, are they going to insist that I take them all out to go through the metal detector? It's just that ones fairly new so I shouldn't be taking it out, and if I do have to take it out, I doubt i'll get it in again.
Second thing is I want to take a DVD with me. I'm only going to be probably just be having hand luggage I assume that it will be fine in the cabin (I won't be watching it on the plane, i'm taking it home because I want to see what it looks like on a HD TV ) but should I pack it towards the top of my bag incase they want me to take it out before they X-ray it? It's just that when my parents flew to South Africa the airport bods told them they had to remove all larger metallic items (keys etc.) from the hand luggage for it to be scanned.
If there is any other wisdom any of you could impart it would be wonderful, as I have no idea and i'm a bit scared!

Hey One Winged Angel,
As it happens cardiff is my local airport.
My mate went through the metal detectors with a tongue peircing no probs, they may ask you to remove jewllwery i had to take my ring and watch off but the said she could keep earings and toungue bar in.
As for DVD i've never been asked to remove anything from hand luggage, they have started to ask if you have a laptop or similar equipment in the bag.
If in doubt ask the staff there they are really friendly. A word of warning though the check in queues in cardiff are the worst i've seen in any uk airport and the past 2 i've flown from there (both domestic flight) i was delayed only by an hour but take a book just in case. Oh and the food in the cafe isnt very nice.

Piercings should be fine. they can always do it with the hand held scanner if they do cause any problems.
I am finding nowadays that UK airport security is much more over the top and awkward than current US security!
Not sure about cardiff- but here is how it generally works. They all follow pretty much the same guidelines.
I leave my watch and ring on and sometimes my belt (although that does bleep it from time to time)- although they may well ask you to remove your shoes too and scan them.
Wallet and anything else metal (including foil!- I was mortified at barcelona when i kept bleeping - and it turned out it was a condom riiiight at the bottom one of my pockets i had forgotten was there and the foil was setting it off :o chewing gum packs will do the same BTW ) in pockets put in your carry on bag or in the bin to go through the scanner. They will ask you to remove your jacket too and put it through the x ray.
Ive never had to have keys and stuff checked individually. Just put the bag through as it is and if anything looks suspicious, they will rescan it or ask to see something of interest.
DVD you should have absolutely no problems with.
Goes without saying, no blades/penknives or anything sharp in carry on bags.
If you have a laptop they WILL insist you remove it completely to be scanned, and irritatingly and increasingly so they ask you to turn it on to prove it is actually a laptop.
As for the flight- its a short one, and will be over in a flash. Just like taking a bus- I was nervous the first time I flew, but now I do it almost on a weekly basis.....its fun and you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
I would normally say sip water to help keep yourself hydrated and reduce jet lag, but on a 30 min flight I dont think its an issue :)

Theres usually only the one scanner open/working in cardiff so they usually have a queue.
Last time i was there they had someone telling people in the queue what to remove before the person with the little tray. The make you take off your coat/jacket and shoes sometimes.
My dad set the detectors off with chewing gum wrappers before
:o
If in doubt put it in your bag before you get to the security point (which is up stairs so you havent got to worry straight after check in)

Piercings will be fine, as I suppose they're visible ;)
Everything else that's metal or foil (keys, coins, packet of cigs etc.) you should take out of pockets and put in the trays they give you before going through the X-ray machine. Sometimes they also ask you to remove heavy coats or jackets, but I imagine you won't be wearing a winter coat in this weather! I've never been asked to take my shoes off, although I've had them scanned with a portable scanner on a couple of occasions.
I've never ever had to take off rings/bracelets/watch.
You'd be wise to pack your DVD player separately or place it at the top of your suitcase. I frequently travel with a DVD player (I have a portable one) and they always ask me to take it out so they can scan it separately.
