Mexico - Cancun or Isla Mujeres?!
Mexico - Cancun or Isla Mujeres?!
Hi guys,
My bf and I are looking at going to Mexico for a week, probably around November time.
Our initial thoughts were towards Cancun , but after a bit of research, this seems quite commercial/built up for our tastes. We found somewhere called Isla Mujeres (see here - has anyone been here??
Now, more questions!
Where is good to go in Mexico - preferably around the Cancun area/that side of coast. Basically we want something with sun, nice beaches, watersports and a bit more secluded/romantic/private.
Cancun sounds a bit too active/familly orientated for our tastes!
Links/hotels/operators much appreciated.....I've already printed off Jess's thread of links for reference! (thanks Jess! :) )
Oh, and an idea of price/s would be good too - I've done some provisional searches, and am coming up with at least £650-700 pp for a week in Cancun - am guessing it would be more for somewhere more exclusive..... :( Does this sound right for those of you who have been?
Are there any good tour operators for this area of Mexico? Thompson etc seem a bit pants.....

I went to Cancun after doing sightseeing outside Mexico City and at Merida. Gorgeous country. I stayed at the Xpu Ha Palace http://www.palaceresorts.com/Resorts...lace/Index.asp it's amazing everything-inclusive huge resort, stay in beautiful huts that overlook the beach. Loved it.
You say that Cancun looks built up, but that's only really outside of it from what I remember. It depends on your taste - Isla Mujeres is probably a lot quieter and more rural from what I read on that website, ie you have to travel further to go to urban-type areas. I don't think there's a lot more you can do there than in Cancun!
It may be a good idea to ring up the hotel you plan to stay at and see what tours are available that are local, so that buses arrive there to pick you up etc.
Enjoy

Hello!!!
I love Isla Mujeres although I'm not sure about staying there for more than a week since it is very small but it depends what you are up for really. How about staying down the coast somewhere like Playa Del Carmen
Further to what Shinto was saying, there are nicer parts of the strip. For example, the further down you go towards the Hilton hotel and Jack Tar village it is quieter. We stayed in a hotel called El Pueblito which (at the time) was one of the few mexican themed hotels on the strip (the others being more Americanised). It is lovely.
El Pueblito
We went with BA the first time but I don't think they go there anymore and Airtours the second time which was ok, but we didn't really arrange anything through them since we had been there beofre and knew what we were doing.
I would say that 1 week is ok but 2 weeks would be better since the flight is long and the price itself would be quite similar for 2 weeks and the biggest expense is the flight. Look at doing it yourself on expedia perhaps. Or else, the second time we went, we got a late deal for 2 weeks for £500 each All Inclusive, ridiculously cheap.

Thanks guys for your responses! :)
Shinto: Thanks for the link, I'll look into that. I guess I was saying Cancun looks built up because a large part of it seems to be resorts, and a lot seems familly orientated.
We wouldn't mind some nightlife, but these built up resorts and big hotels just look a bit tacky (yes, despite the huge prices/5* etc etc).
The location of the Riu Cancun looks amazing (talk about beachfront!), but we want to get out and about, and be able to relax - that just seemed more likely from a more remote place like Isla Mujeres. Would that be your understanding?
Jess: Heh, you obviously :throb: Cancun! ;)
We would look at going for two weeks, but we already have some other holidays booked, so we may not have enough time this year at least. Ah well, gives us more time to book for somewhere *really* cool....... :yay:
I looked at airtours, but they seemed v.expensive, and didn't really get great reviews. £500 is v.good - who was that with?

Airtours.
If you look on Co-op travelcare website they have some good deals for November.
I do love Cancun but because we've been there twice now I probably wouldn't go back since it is getting more built up. Part of the reason I love it so much because I got engaged there:) but also because I love America and this place is like the states but with better beaches.;)
