Ryanair - WHAT A shoddy, shocking company! (Long)
Ryanair - WHAT A shoddy, shocking company! (Long)
We booked our flights with Ryanair, for yesterday before that documentary went out on TV. We'd previously said on flying with Ryanair that we would never fly with them ever again, yet we did book our flights with them for yesterday because they were so much cheaper.
Well, NEVER EVER AGAIN, will I fly with them again after the disgusting treatment of their customers which took place yesterday at Stansted Airport.
We were due to fly to spain, from stansted at 11:20 yesterday morning, (25th April) returning one week later on 2nd May.
We checked in, no problems, went and had breakfast in the pub, and then our gate number was called (about 10:20 ish) and we went to the gate.
Sat there... and sat there. On and off there were announcements that our flight was delayed and kept giving us new times of estimated arrival at Stansted and what our new estimated take-off time would be.... on and on this went on, till about 12:40 when our flight number disappeared off the board all together.
Obviously, this didn't bode too well so I managed to find someone (Funny how Ryanairs staff disappear when something is going on) and asked them what was going on. They said they were waiting on a plane to be sent from Gatwick to us so we could then fly onto Murcia, but it hadn't been given a slot number from Gatwick.
I knew that there was another flight due to leave stansted at 13:20 so I asked the guy if our flight was cancelled and whether they were waiting on the 13:20 flight to depart before informing us lot (so effectively we couldn't demand to be put on the 13:20 flight).
Lo and behold, 13:25 we were told that our flight was cancelled and that we'd have to wait for someone to escort us back to the departures area so we could queue up and rebook our flights.
By the time we got back to the departures area was 14:10 and by the time we got to the front of the queue was 16:30, so we queued for over two hours.
Ryanair cancelled over 30 flights yesterday due to not having enough planes at Stansted. Stansted airport was shut monday night due to fog and runway lights not working so all planes were diverted to Gatwick, Luton and Birmingham. If you estimate 300 people per flight, that is 9000 people left stranded.
We couldn't get on a flight today, or tomorrow... and have to wait until Friday now to fly out. Luckily Mr SL has his own house out there so we don't have to worry about hotel accommodation / car hire etc.
But, the treatment was shocking. Ryanairs staff were shouting at people and generally speaking to its customers as if they were idiots.
They were also giving priority to people who had to pay excess baggage on flights still going out that day which I thought was wrong. They also only had 6 staff working to clear the huge backlog of a queue of people from all those cancelled flights.
I know that the flights with Ryanair are cheap and cheerful but I will never fly with them again after this. Althought it wasn't "their fault" they could have handled this a lot better than they did. There were people sleeping in the airport... there were people crying cos they couldn't get on a flight and there was a lot of angry and upset people.
Had we been flying with BA yesterday I'm sure the treatment of their customers would have been a 1000 times better.
We will, in future pay more for our flights. Its' gotta be worth it after all that hassle yesterday.

Agreed
Its not just the actual flight that I pay for when i fly BA or similar....its the service if something goes wrong, and on the ground that many people dont think of.
Flew out on easter monday on maxjet from stanstead to NY, and the line at the ryanair customer services (complaints?) desk was almost as big as the check in line (which was huge!)...
Ive said it before- I would rather walk than fly with Ryanair

You've obviously never been on a cancelled BA flight then ;)
Ryanair are truly awful. I refuse point blank to fly with them (no matter how cheap they are!).

Thats the payoff you make!! I have heard so many people say the same words as you "I'll never do it again" but the price always makes them go back!
I also doubt BA would have been 1000 times better.
I'm flying contential to New york, knowing that they have bad reports and poor service. However, its cheaper and thats my priority right now.

Oh dear - my OH is flying with them today, on a day trip to Europe. :p I know he got there OK, as he sent me a text, but what time will he return?!!
We generally tend to go BA or British Midland, as there aren't very many low cost airlines operating from Heathrow.
TBH, I would only go with them for a really rock bottom fare (as his was) or for something where the time of arrival isn't crucial.
