Never been abroad....need help!!

Never been abroad....need help!!
  Hi there,
My Husband will be 50 next May so we've decided to have our first holiday abroad!!!
He has travelled abroad before meeting me but mostly while in the forces. We've been together 15 years so its been a while!!
We'd like to go away without the children for a start;) and as we've never left them before (My mum will be babysitting!) I guess a week will be long enough.
We'd like to go somewhere for a nice break without too many children (we plan on going during term time, May preferably). A nice beach and places to wander around would be good (markets, etc?)
I think an all inclusive holiday would be good so we're not worrying about how much money we'll need for food and drink and I think £1000 for both of us is about what we'll afford. Is that enough for a decent holiday? Will that include flights? As you can tell I really don't have a clue!!!
Thought this would be a good starting point as we really have no idea on where to go!!!! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!:)
I've tried looking at a couple of travel websites but I don't know where to start!

Hello
I guess you were thinking of a week? May is a lovely time to go, places will be hotting up but the prices are often really good then. Did you have anywhere in mind at all?
£1000 is realistic, especially for May. Not sure about AI though, I would say so mind.
Theres two ways to do it, you could go through a travel agent, they will sort everything out for you as a package, accomodation, flights, transfers etc. If you have any queries you would go through them. Or you could do it as a dynamic, you would book your flights and accomodation yourself online. Eg, flights with thomson, accomodation with superbreak or someone similar. This often works out cheaper. You could then get a taxi from the airport to your accomodation. This often works out cheaper but as its your first time abroad maybe a t.agent would be best.
Or go to a t.agent and get a few ideas, then have a look yourself on the net. I know that package summer hols for '07 come out in the next month or so. And if you were to book through an agent it would be cheaper to book sooner rather than later. "last minute" deals dont really exist any more.
A few places to give you some ideas. Kalathos in Rhodes is quiet, peaceful and relaxing, typically greek, white washed buildings and the like. Very traditional so would give you a real greek feel
Playas de Fornells in menorca, again small & relaxing. Very typical
Marmari in Kos
Chania in crete is again traditional, fab if you take out car hire :)

I think a smaller island would be better as it can be tempting on the mainland to try and do too much and see things which are just too far away but an island physically prevents you from doing this.
I would book through a travel agent, have a look a www.eclipseholidays.co.uk or www.mytravel.co.uk which will cover most of the travel agents, see what your options are for the dates and budget you have in mind and see if anything takes your fancy.
You can do it all yourself but I think that knowing you have someone to meet you at the other end etc is quite reassuring.

Thanks for the replies, they've given me something to think about. Good to know about the last minute deals, I would rather book now as it's a special holiday but my Husband would be likely to suggest to wait to try and get a cheaper deal!
Also good to hear you feel booking through a travel agent would be better this time around. It would be better if someone was there telling us where to go, etc at the other end, I wouldn't have a clue what to do once I got off the plane!!!???
Also glad you didn't suggest a 'Saga' holiday as he will be 50:lol: ....I thought some cheeky git might!!!! I'm 15 years younger so he would have to go on his own!!
Thanks again for taking the time to reply, I'll check out those websites and places you suggest:yay:

 at the saga comment! Have a look online but also pop into the travel agent as they can sort it all out for you and often beat the web price. I know thomson & dawsons do.
Let us know how you get on.
