San Diego or Southern California Advice

San Diego or Southern California Advice
I'm thinking about holidays for this year and am considering going back to Las Vegas where we have friends. This is really premature but I thought I'd ask now while I'm thinking about it and so I can work out costs etc to see if it's do-able this year.
Whenever we go to Vegas, we try to fit in a visit to other places too and this time I'm thinking it would be good to visit San Diego. Could anyone give any advice on San Diego itself - e.g. best things to see, how long you'd recommend staying there etc etc.
Has anyone done the drive from Vegas to SD, or reverse? If so, how long did it take and are there any worthwhile stopping points along the way?
B/f is used to driving in the States so that isn't an issue and our last holiday had a few long journeys that we coped with OK (longest being Yosemite to Vegas).
Does anyone have any other recomendations for southern California?
Any useful information would be appreciated so I can start thinking and planning :).
(I've tried searching under San Diego but not a lot came up so sorry if this has been covered before.)

I went on my honeymoon a couple of years back to San Franscisco, Las Vegas and San Diego.
To be honest, I loved Las Vegas - I thought I would find it too tacky. I was a bit disappointed with San Diego but it could have been because I was upset about our accommodation - it was the most expensive place we booked called Paradise Island or something and looked lovely in the pictures but when wegot there it was grey breeze-block chalets and the furnishings and fitting were worn and cheap.
We went to the zoo (which is good but not as great as I thought it would be) and the park. There is also Sea World but we didn't go as we didn't have the time and we had been to Sea World in Florida the year before. There are lots of beaches, if you're into that sort of thing (just stay away from the public toilets  )
It wasn't as bad as it seems ad is a lovely warm place but somewhere I would live rather than visit on holiday again.
We flew from San Franscisco so I can't comment on the drive.
How about San Franscisco? It was much better and more to see but can be a bit chilly.

We went to San Francisco last year - flew in to San Fran, had a few days there before driving to Yosemitte. Spent a couple of days there before heading to Las Vegas where we included a trip to the Grand Canyon. It was one of my best holidays ever :).
I always enjoy seeing more than one place and as I'd heard that San Diego is good I thought we could try there. It seems there's plenty to see so thought we would fill our time well. Think I will stay away from the accommodation you mention - thanks for the warning!

I went to San Diego about 7 years ago, really liked it and enjoyed the time there. I agree it is not particularly exciting but it is a very nice city and good for hanging out in.
We went to Vegas too which i liked much more than I thought I would. It is completely tacky but in a fabulous way if you see what I mean. The other place we went was LA and I wouldn't go back there if you paid me. Totally soulless, nothing much to do and expensive too.
If you went to Southern california, what about going to Mexico for a few days? We went to Tijuana which is just across the border and frankly is awful but I have had other friends who went a bit further on and said there were much nicer places. Quite a lot of california guidebooks also include Mexico, I think California was originally part of Mexico actually (actually)!

we drove from san deigo to las vegas last year
took about 5/6 hours and the road is very long and just a mountain road not a lot on it at all think ther emight have been a couple of malls but they were few and far between
we flew back home from las vegas
we stayed 3 nights in san deigo at the handlery which does have a website we found it to be clean and cheap and would stay there again
wouldnt really stay more then three nights as we got a bit bored to be honest
we did the zoo which was nice but as the others have said already been to sea world so missed that out
we also visited all the different districts but didnt go over the border to tijuna as we couldnt take the hire car across and it wasnt worth the hassle
it was relaxing and looking back we could have seen the museums and cultural areas but we wwanted to relax as we had just driven 5 hours from phoenix so the first night was a bit of a blur
hope this helps
