crisis - travelling soon but lost passport!
crisis - travelling soon but lost passport!
please help - hoping someone may be able to give me some advice.
I am going travelling around SE Asia on the 5th Janurary and had everything arranaged - the trip has been planned for 5 months and I was soooooo looking forward to it until my passport vanished...
I always keep it in a box on top of my wardrop up in my bedroom along with all my other travel paraphinilla like flight tickets etc. I had recently sent it away to London to get a visa stamped in it and the last I remember having it was about 2 weeks ago when I was looking at it up in my bedroom. I can't actually remember putting it my my box but assume that is where I put it.
I went to check my flight tickets a few days ago and noticed my passport was missing. My whole family have looked EVERYWHERE for it - we have literally turned the house upside down and I have went through my bedroom with a finetooth comb and it hasn't been found. It is very unlikely anyone would have thrown it out.
The really werid thing is that my old passport - which I always keep in the box on top of my wardrop is gone too - completely vanished the pair of them:confused:  .
It is too late to get a new passport as it takes 7 days to replace (I have spoken to the passport office) and longer at this time of year. I am touring with a company and will lose all my money if I cancel my trip now - my flight tickets are non refunable too! i stand to lose £1000 if I can't find my passport.
Not sure why I am typing all this - was hoping maybe someone could offer suggestions how I deal with all this. My friend (who is
a nurse) suggested I go to my doctor the day before with some 'mystrey illness' which would stop my from travelling b/c at least then I could claim off my travel insurance for moeny lost. My insurnace company does not provide claims for passports lost before departure:mad:
Any advice anyone?
Please help!

Can they not rush you through a new passport if you show your tickets. My dads friend realised the day BEFORE he travelled that his had expired. It was a close thing but the passport office were very helpful and he got it in time to travel.
This was here in Ireland though- maybe its different.
Keeping everything crossed for you! Get back on to them and in the meantime keep searching.
Good luck.

I would turn up at your nearest passport office as soon as it opens on Tuesday with your tickets and birth certificate and beg. I imagine they'll take pity on you if you're tragic enough.

I'm sorry but the last two suggestions won't wash. Begging will not work for lost or stolen passports - after all, you could be anybody unfortunately. The guaranteed turnaround for lost passports is 7 days if you use the express service and only in certain circumstances will you get it quicker. They WILL NOT issue new passports on the day anymore if the current one has been lost or stolen. This changed in 2001 after 9/11. If you turn up at a passport office, they can accept your application and take your money off you but they have to make security checks and this takes AT LEAST 24 hours. I don't think you'll be able to turn up on Tuesday and get one for Thursday, that's for sure.
mr kateab discovered his passport was missing on the Sunday before a trip to Sicily on the following Saturday in 2002. He went to Liverpool and put in the application and we were lucky in that he got the passport back on the Thursday as it was a quiet time of year. Any other time, we would have had to cancel the trip.
I'm sorry but I suggest you are extremely vigilant about the whereabouts of your passport in future (if mr kateab has to have his passport for ID, he asks me for it and I take it back off him asap and put it in an extremely safe place) AND you check the details of cover for travel insurance very carefully before you buy it.

kateab is right - it takes at least 7 days to get a replacement for a lost or stolen passport and longer at this time of year. I thought the chances of getting it back in time were miniscule and so didn't bother trying in the hope that my passport would eventually surface... well it hasn't. I have looked literally everywhere.:(
i reckon it has been stolen mainly b/c my old passport (which I kept in the same box) is gone too. I am very careful with my passports and have never lost it before despite having travelled all over the world.
If it doesn't surface byTuesday then I will have to postpone my trip. I will lose all money on thne money from the tour but hopefully will only lose a little on my flights as I will just chance the dates. I stand to lose around £700:( .
I think it is bad that travel insurnace only covers for lost passports after departure and don't include it as a reason for cancelling your trip.
Don't know what I did to deserve such bad luck. Really hope the rest of the year isn't going to be like this.:(
