Aromatherapy advice needed please

Hello there
I am exloring the different complementary therapies around and I would just like to know what it is an aromatherapist does exactly.
I am not keen on massaging people and wondered if it is still possible to explore aromatherapy without having to incorporate body massages? Do you advise people on what oil to use, where and why sort of thing? Or do you actually treat them yourself?
Any info would be much appreciated
Thankyou
abigail :)

There are many ways of using aromatherapy oils - massage is just one of them. They can be used in the bath/shower in a burner as a hot or cold compress or just applied in creams and lotions.
However, if you were to train to be an aromatherapist, a large part of your training would be massage (this is probably the most effective way of using oils). In fact I think I am right in saying that you have to have a massage and an a & p qualification before you can study to be an aromatherapist.
How would you run your business? Most people visiting an aromatherapist would probably be interested in massage and you may be able to interest them in using your blended products in between treatments. If you were just offering a consultation and recommending that they use, for instance a couple of drops of oil in the bath, how would you make your money? The oils are available for people to buy anywhere and I don't think people would pay just for an aromatherapy consultation.
If you were just interested in using oils for yourself, friends and family, you could try an introductory course and I do seem to remember that there was one aromatherapy supplier that ran courses on making products, but can't remember the name.
So really I think if you were looking to become an aromatherapist, massage would be a big part of what you do.
Hope this helps.

Hi Abigail, in France they study Aromatology and don't always use massage in the treatment as they take the oils internally for specific problems.
Here we are very 'hands on' and I suppose that is what all us aromatherapists love so much. You really do need to not have a problem with getting your hands on people and I think you will find that most therapists struggle to keep their hands off! Even if people aren't wanting a treatment!:D
