Aromatherapy help!

Hi there friends ...........
Hello there my saviours its 2am and i have been studying all day and night and i have a few questions that once again i am having trouble putting answers together and cant find a way round it.
The only two books i have here are not really good at all and if i transfer the information accross from there the answers would be far too long and i reckon not what they should be.
I am sorry there is as many but i searched and searched the web as i want to succeed here and i am determined to learn all i can and so trust me folks i worked in these for two damn days and i am going crazy :( If anyone can help me it would be great.
Can anyone also suggest maybe one or two real good books i could buy that might help me through this, one that covers a great deal of information on every area of aromatherapy. Just got 100% on anatomy and physiology but i am getting more scared a time goes on here.
Maybe its my injury causing me to doubt myself and i shouldnt i know. Just had a bad week in all areas........... Thanks again folks you helped me get 6 lessons and for each on 100% in them all. This is the first time have pasted as many questions as that and i do apologise i feel silly but i know you will help if you can...:)
1) Name 5 sources of essential oils
2) Name 3 catagories of essential oils
3) How can aromatherapy act as a preventative treatment
4) what would you recommend to a client suffering from temporary stressful time.

Answers:

Hi
I would recommend Shirley Price's Aromatherapy Workbook and also anything by Julia Lawless. I also love Chrissie Wildwood's books.
Your questions are a little vague but I will do my best.
1. Sources.............do you mean leaves, roots of grass, bark, heartwood, citrus peel, seeds, flower tops, resin
2. Categories ..........citrus, floral, herbaceous, camphoraceous, spicy, resinous, woody and earthy
I will try and add more later but I am sure the more qualified than me will be along to help you too.

The one I turn to over and over is Salvatore Battaglia : The complete Guide to Aromatherapy .
It has details on all of the questions you have above but I especially like the sections on A, P and pathology - he goes through each system and them gives details of problems that might arise , good oils and also other treatments and aftercare advice - fantastic for case studies.
very good section on stress and depression .......
the ISBN is 0 646 20670 2
you can get it on Amazon where it is £46 and takes 4-6 weeks or
from www.quinessence.com where it is £21.99 and I got mine in days!

Sounds like this could be you right now ;) so stop for a moment take a deep breath and ask yourself what should you do?
Consider - do you want to feel sedated i.e you are not sleeping due to circular thoughts/worry etc and just want to swich off?
or do you want to feel more relaxed but still able to get on with life - you just need to calm down.
do you need to concentrate and focus - ie the abilty to finish one job and "tick it off your list"
is the stress due to something like grief
these are not exclusive ie you could need to do more than one
This will point you in the direction of the oils to start with.
Then consider how you would use them - massage , diffuser/burner , in the bath , on a pillow to aid sleep , on a tissue.
At what time of day would you use certain oils - ie some could be of use during the day and some could help you switch off at night.
Then what other advice would you give ? Other therapies - bach flowers spring to mind , crystals and reiki too
Drink water
Cut down on tea and coffee / Alcohol / other stimulants
Diet
exercise
Sleep
Relaxation techniques/Meditation
Hope this helps a little

Hi. I think it is very easy to get in a tizz over this. As you already KNOW you have got fantastic marks in your previous exams and there is no reason why you won't do the same again.
I was just like you!;) I spent months on my a and p and had to know every single thing to reassure myself, I felt the same with aromatherapy and spent nine months studying the subject and hours and hours outside the course living and breathing aromatherapy, I didn't even read a newspaper - unless there was some related article in it![&:] You have had some good advice above. It isn't rocket science and it is all very subjective, one therapist would choose certain oils and another other oils and it is tricky to learn everything. I think the best advice our tutor gave us was that the examining board were looking for an 'understanding' of the subject.
You need to learn the basics, ie where the oils come from (trees, flowers etc), how they are derived (extraction methods etc), the chemical components (esters, terpenes etc), the country of origin and the latin names. You also need to know the basic effects, ie stimulating, pain-relieving, sedating etc). Once you know that then the rest you should be able to cope with using a bit of nouse. You will get a lot of marks if you get a 20 point question asking the latin names and country of origin and you know them all and so it doesn't matter if you lose a few points on other questions.[:o]
Don't be so tough on yourself (said she) and enjoy it! Good luck.:)
