reiki as a career?
hello everyone, how are things with you??????
I just wanted to put a post up here for a bit of advice really. I am reiki2 qualified, and am hoping to get insurance and membership with HPAI next week.
I have just started to practise on a couple of clients and looks like it could be a regular thing, which is good!!
The thing is, since i got ill 20 months ago i haven;t worked and obviously have not had an income. the thing is, now that I am attuned i would dearly love to make a career out of healing. I have been advertising my availability to give healing to animals and people and have had a small response, but as soon as I am insured I will definitely be marketing myself a lot more.
Am I selfish or misguided in some way to want to make money using reiki? [sm=scratchchin.gif]
I am conscious of wanting to do the right thing, but it really would be so satisfying for me to earn a living doing something I totally enjoy!! I would love to be able to help people/animals and get paid for it!!
If anyone has any opinion/advice/guidance I would be grateful.
I would like to aim mainly at healing animals, but I would guess that that could lead to offering healing to the animals' owners too, with possible further referrals from that. if i can;t get established in this area, i was hoping to tap into the local businesses/industries by offering holistic sessions to employees (a kind of incentive to staff to stay calm and stress-free!!) as I feel this would be an advantage in the workplace. Also I am sure I heard that a business can get calim tax back on expenditure they invest in staff welfare....
I promise i will wait nicely and patiently, with arms and legged crossed like a good little girl (like in school!!!!LOL), until someone is able to get back to me.....hee hee:D:D:D:D
lots of luv and reiki light to you all

Tigereye, I don't see anything wrong with making money from Reiki - after all we all have to eat!
Isn't this more about balance - in that I mean you can offer Reiki to people at a fair price, and they pay you for your time. One of the things that I was told when I did my Reiki attunements was that it lessens the "gift" if you don't receive payment of a kind from people. I wouldn't expect my nearest and dearest to pay for treatments as they already give me the gift of love and support, but charging people you don't know is absolutely fine.
As a sub note to all of this, if you want to get rich doing Reiki then perhaps your heart is not in the right place - but nothing you have said suggests that you mean to make a fortune, so don't panic.
Good luck in your endeavours

Can you tell me more about HPAI the insurance company as I think that I would like to see if I can do some work later in the year.

Heya Tiger,
As Anita said, it's not wrong because you're charging for your time. From what I've heard, most Reiki practitioners charge for treating clients, they're not charging for the healing itself, but for their time and expenses that are incurred, plus obviously some profit to actually live off, however a lot of practitioners will accept requests for distant healing (vie email, phone calls etc) and will happily send some without charge when they have a convenient moment.
It would be nice if we could all live in a society where we could heal clients free of charge and they would provide us with some service in return, everyone looking after each other in different ways. Maybe sometime in the future eh. :)

Ok, look at it this way, if you were doing another full time job in order to live, you would have less time to give Reiki...therefore less people and animals could receive it. The only thing would be to charge no more and no less than what you need. So in other words, you might need to charge more to survive to begin with and as you build up a regular client base, you might be in a better position to charge less and perhaps in time you might be able to do more charitable work.
I do so understand where you are coming from not wanting to charge for this, I am of the same mind to be honest but you have to live!! I am so lucky to be in a position that I can do charity work but I am really one of the very few. If I was not in this position, after getting my second degree, I know I would have to charge.
It's all about balance.
Take care

Hi tigereye,
It always amazes me how people are happy to have a "normal job" and take home their pay, regardless of the ethics of the job's organisation or whether they actually help society in any way, whilst on the other hand, when it comes to actually helping others with Reiki, many people are unhappy to receive payment.
Don't worry, just take the money, you are HELPING people and animals and making them happy; and you DESERVE to have enough money to live on and as recognition of how much you change clients' lives for the better! If you end up having more money than you are comfortable with (actually hard to do after paying insurance, association membership, towels, tax, NI, CPD etc) then you can always give it to your favourite animal charity and make even more creatures happy :)

thank you to you all, you luvely people!!! I feel so supported here on my reiki path!! I guess I am a little insecure about my abilities (even though the results in clients has been amazing so far!!), and I feel uncomfortable charging for something that I am not yet proficient in!!
I understand that it is the reiki that is "doing the work" and I am merely a channel, but I still have a lot of my own healing to do! I am a bit worried that I am not as clear a channel as I could be, and I sometimes worry about giving a poor quality session!! I think I actually worry too much...guess most of my own reiki therapy is going to have to be working on my self-esteem and fears/anxieties. I have to say though, that I love the feeling I get after working with a client!! It gives me a real buzz to know that I have helped in some way!!
I am so appreciative of this gift! I am amazed at how the reiki works with a client, as I am only just starting out, I can only imagine how wonderful it will be in a few years when I am hopefully well on my reiki path!!
my reiki friends...thank you with all my heart for being here for me and telling me what I needed to hear!!
lots of love and reiki blessings

This reply is probably a bit superfluous and johney come lately but I get the urge to add my 2 penneth worth: I was taught that there should always be an exchange of energy when performing Reiki and money is just another form of energy.
Think of if this way - did you pay for your attunements? Did you feel that this payment was an abuse of Reiki or that your Reiki master was a bad person? :)
If (when!) you do well you always have the option to say thank you to the universe by offering voluntary Reiki to those who can't affford it. I know of a number of practioners who work with retirement homes and hospices. But in the mean time be sure that the universe wants you to eat!
Good luck with your business

This is my first post here, so apologies for not introducing myself first, but if you want to help animals you could always approach your local rescue and offer your services as a Reiki practitioner on a voluntary basis? This is what I do when I have the chance :)

Can anyone help me out in regards to Organisations I may need to register with?
I love the idea of making a living from Reiki. Just the thought of actually helping people and keeping myself at the same time seems too good to be true :D

Dear Tigereye,
Do you have a few lives to wait?! I guess that's about what it would take to be really proficient in Reiki. [sm=rollaugh.gif] [sm=rollaugh.gif] [sm=rollaugh.gif] In the meantime, having some experience of the energy and knowing how to give a treatment will do perfectly as a start.
Please remmebr that when treating animals you need the vet's conscent/presence. But if treating human's their GP does not have to be present! [sm=rollaugh.gif]

Hi Dr. Mambo,
Have you visited the UK Reiki Federation website? www.reikifed.co.uk
or The Reiki Association website www.reikiassociation.org.uk
or the HPAI who accept and insure Reiki Level 2 practitioners at very low rates.
These organisations have Codes of Practice, Conduct and Ethics as well as their own recommended insurance schemes for those wishing to practise Reiki on the unsuspecting;) public.

You dont technically have to get a vets permission before treating animals because Reiki isnt a 'manipulative therapy' but its always a good idea ;)

Hello,
I found this on the web, but have not yet looked at the 1966 act itself:
"Before treating animals it is advisable to seek assurance from the owner that a vet has examined the animal. The Veterinary Surgery Act of 1966 prohibits anyone other than a qualified veterinary surgeon from treating animals, including diagnosis of ailments and giving of advice on such diagnosis. However the healing of animals by contact healing, by the laying on of hands or distant healing is legal. However the Protection of Animals Act 1911 requires that if an animal clearly needs treatment from a veterinary surgeon the owner must obtain this. To give emergency First Aid to animals for the purpose of saving life or relieving pain is permissible under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Schedule 3."
So Doogle is ablsolutly right. Reiki is legal without a vet!
