Massaging King Kong's Son

Hi everyone
I am just starting out in aromatherapy massage and my hubby's mate wants me to practice on him, the thing is, he is so hairy. You just would not believe how much body hair this young man has...........me thinks his dad is King Kong.
Anyhow, I have never massaged anyone hairy before so I was wondering if it would be okay to use essential oils and if so which ones. To be honest I am wondering if the oils would hinder rather than help with the massage.
Any ideas anyone.

I have two fairly hairy gentlemen and its interesting! Actually once you get used to the sensation its no different however you may find you end up with hairs on your hands and i just rub them onto the towel as i go along....hmm nice!!!

One thing we have been lucky on at college ... we have some guy's too ... generally use more oil if your worried ... otherwise your "victim" will have friction burns ...;)

Hi Angel,
TigerBee is right, it's different but interesting! You do need to use a lot more carrier oil as the hair soaks it straight up. If you are doing this for exam case studies, make sure you record the fact that the client is hairy, this helps show you have had lots of different types of clients, and record the increase in carrier as this is 'adapting the massage to the client's needs'.
Also, wash the towels in a separate batch to any other client towels as oily hairs tend to stick like glue to anything they touch (euch!)
Oil wise, usual consultation applies, although Rosemary does stimulate hair growth, so you might not want to go there!;)
Good luck!

I see an incredibly hairy man too and use about 40-45mls of carrier oil per full body massage, or 20-25mls per back massage. I also agree with Tigerbee, it is a different sensation but you can also see exactly where you have been as you leave little'whirls' in the hair. I hadn't noticed a problem with oily sticky hairs though. Its not always easy to see any areas of erythema, or redness, though so you have to 'feel' more.
Good luck with your course, I'm sure this gentleman will benefit from your practising enormously.

Hi Angel
I had to smile when I saw the title of the thread, especially as I'm VERY hairy!!
One tip I would give you - as someone who has recieved massage from students, when massaging the abdomen on a hairy man, use very light pressure, or it will feel like you are giving him a "chinese burn". Otherwise, just as everyone else has said - just use plienty of carrier oil, and you'll be fine.

Hiya everyone
Thank you all for your wonderful answers, I will be sure to use a lot more carrier oil on this man.
Waywood, I hope I didn't offend you with the title of this post, this man is a really good friend of my hubby's and we call him Son of Kong affectionaly not nastily. He is only 21 years old but has more body hair than anyone we know. lol
Will let you all know how I get on with the massage.

I laughed when I saw the title of this thread too as I guessed right away what it was about.
Yes, they do take up more oil and I had one hairy guy (for a massage!) who wanted an hour on his back. Apart from being totally knackered and wondering what on earth more I could do as the clock crept slowly round, my hands tingled for absolutely ages afterwards![&:] It was hard work I have to say.

Hello,
I realise this is an old thread now, but I've only just registered.
Have you tried massage cream instead of oil? When I did my massage qualification, we had to cover base oils, talc and massage cream. We were advised to use massage cream on anyone who had a lot of body hair, and in fact, were told off if we used carrier oils in those cases. Oil makes the hair drag, and can be quite painful for the client. Massage cream is much kinder, and you can still use essential oils in it. I always make sure I have a tub at hand just in case.
Hope this has hepled.

As a hairy man who has massages I'd like to concur with Red Bess on this one.
I don't know why, but massage oil starts to get sticky on my body before long and somehow cream doesn't. And Waywood is spot-on with the Chinese Burns!!
Starting study next month for my ITEC (A&P with massage, now re-named Holistic massage) so I look forward to learning more from you guys.

This thread is so humourous it should have been posted in the Jokes Forum:D! I'll tell my mum, that way she'll really be looking forward to her aromatherapy course in September!

When you say "cream" what exactly do you mean ?
I am seeing a very hairy client tomorrow and was going to use one of Fozzy Massage waxes rather than oil but would like to know more about cream . I also have a lymph cream I make myself ( Patricia Davis' recipie) which is coconut oil (solid) which has lots more "slip" so was going to try that too.
