Psycology & Psychiatry

Can anyone tell me the difference bewteen a psycologist and a psychiatrist. How long is the training for each and do they both require medical school??
I have seen both Doctors of both but I was pretty sure that only psychiatrists were med school trained. My son is 13 and is thinking down this route as a career, but which one??

Answers:

Psychiatric abuse occurs when mentally ill or mentally deficient persons (or those alleged to be mentally ill or deficient) are deliberately or negligently harmed by mental health practitioners who have been entrusted with their care or treatment.
The severity of psychiatric abuse may range from threats, neglect or harassment, to financial exploitation, molestation, beatings, deprogramming or thought reform, psychosurgery, forced electroshock treatment, involuntary drugging, human experimentation, torture, starvation, rape, or even murder and organ harvesting.

Hi Purplepeach,
Psychologist = Scientist, specialising in the study of the functioning of the human brain, either individually or collectively.
Psychiatrist = A Medical Doctor, specialising in the disorders of the human brain.
Effectively then, a Psychiatrist is an Applied Scientist. The difference is very similar to that between a Scientist and a Professional Engineer.
I shall summarise the answers you seek for each:
Psychologist:
Training route: GCSE Maths high grade preferred. A-level almost any subject.
3 year full-time degree. at many Universities or even Open University(Distance Learning). Does not have to be a Medical School.
Master's Degree - usually 2 years.
Doctoral Degree - usually 3 years minimum.
