Cognative Therapy

Hello all
I am a new user, who is currently battling Depression.
I have been told that many sufferers have found Cognative therapy very usefull, but after just returning from the Drs and asking how I could go about geting some info, I am feeling fobbed off.
He told me that I would need to be refered to the Mental Health team, and said it in such a way that it made me think that that was not a good thing to do.
I think that must be a depression thing, I mean reading bad things into what people say, Im not making sense, I know, sorry!
Any way what I am asking for is some way to find out if Cognative Therapy would help me to be me again!
If anyone out there can understand, or make any sense of what I have just written......... Help me......Please.

Hi Donna,
You're right in thinking that Congnitive Behaviour Therapy has a very good track record in helping people who are feeling depressed.
I did a quick search on google and found this site which will give you some more information including therapists in your area:
http://www.babcp.org.uk and then click on the General Public link.
There are other therapies which can help you as well. For example NLP, EFT, Life Coaching and counselling are all "talking" approaches which can have very positive effects. There are various threads in this forum which will help you find out more.
Blessings to you
Jonathan

Hi Donna,
I've just read your posting. I went through depression and anxiety a few years ago and was referred to the local mental health team which is the first step you must take. There will be a waiting list, so patience is required. They then assess your needs. Like you I read that cognitive therapy was the best path to take, so I was adamant and just kept telling them, in fact they agreed. It took about 6 months owing to waiting lists, but in this time I was receiving support from an occupational therapist and some group therapy, which all helped. I've never looked back and in fact this experience has formed the basis of my new life helping others with similar challenges[sm=1syellow1.gif]
So I urge you to go back to the doctor and be definite with your wishes. The reason doctors drag their heels is the cost. Just remind yourself that you only have one life and if you are willing to make the changes then the techniques of cognitive therapy can move you forward.
I can recommend a book that uses cognitive tools which helped me even further, although not a substitute for therapy. It was so effective that I trained in it and I love it. It's Fearless Living - Live Without Regrets by Rhonda Britten, you can order it from your local library.
Yours now Fearlessly,
Debbie

Thank you for your positive words, they have made me more determined to assert my wishes for cognative therapy at the doctors, (as you can tell I am Having one of my better days).
I think this new strength has come from HP, knowing that people have gone through the same as me, and come out the other side a better more capable person.
Thank you

Hi Donna
So sorry to hear that you are battling with depression. From experience I know what it is like.
I was lucky enough to receive cognitive therapy. I found it very hard and painful at the time but hate to think where I would be now if I hadn't gone through with it.
Depression and panic attacks struck me about 10 years ago. At that time the depression was acute, really scarey stuff. I'm sure I don't need to go into details because you will understand what I mean. Unfortunately it has become long-term chronic depression which I now have to live with. However, the cognitive therapy taught me how to live with it, and how to get the most out of life with this condition. It helped me to look at my life and see where I could make the changes, and how I could help myself. It was full of very practical advise which I call 'my tricks for survival' and it is amazing how these 'tricks' can help especially on bad days.
I would strongly reccomend that you 'pester' your doctor.
Please feel free to pm me if you would like to discuss it further, or if you just need someone to chat to
Love and blessings
Maureen

Hi Donna,
'Better days' do become more frequent and with the techniques you learn, you know the low days will pass and in fact you learn from them.
Like Maureen's 'tricks' I call it my 'toolbox'. I use it daily in order to keep the reserve topped up, therefore when a 'low' day hits, you've got more strength because the battery (so to speak) is full.
It's building a muscle of self-esteem, each small step (and I mean small) adds to your inner strength. One tool I use myself and with clients is to change our negative self talk which constantly brings us down, attempting to remind us of how useless we think are.
For a few days, listen to yourself and catch any regular negative self talk. Things like, :but :I can't :It's a problem :life's hard's :I should and many more. This type of language blocks and keeps you from moving forward. It applies to anyone at any level, someone maybe successful in one area of life, yet constantly 'beating themselves up' in another.
Once you're aware of your regular phrases, you are on the way to change. Then you begin substituting these words with empowering words like ~choose ~opportunity ~challenge ~possibility ~intention, etc.
It sounds so simple and it is. That's what I love about Fearless Living which is based in cognitive therapy. Do try the book, it really helped me move forward in life. And as Maureen says: pester the doctor;)
Good luck

Thank you all!
For your positive words, support, and encouragement.
I am feeling a bit emotional today, but feel with so much knowledge,( cause I belive knowledge is power)
I can achieve my goal of becoming a " normal" person.
Look see I said I can, not I might or I wish, now that is progress, and I havent even had ant therapy yet!
I am still experiencing periods of self doubt, and anxiety, but now i log onto HP, read the postings, and can almost feel the positivity jumping from the screen and into me, and if I need to smile, I read the jokes!
Thank you
I know I can do this!

Great Donna,
Here's a quote from Fearless Living to support you:
"In order to make any permanent changes, you have to be willing. Willing to see things differently. Willing to experience new ideas. Willing to listen to the people who cheered you on rather than ones who echoed your fears."
