So just what is healthy food?

Just how easy is it to have a healthy diet?
Ok you can try as much as possible to reduce your acid ash levels( dont ask me - I read it somewhere) by not eating certain foods.
You can eat "live" foods (saying that always makes me squirm a bit ) and you can choose veggie or not depending on your morals.
But what does a mere mortal have to do to get organic locally grown produce.
Seems to me the supermarkets conveniently have us by the short and curlies! Not got the time to look any further.
I would love to have a place to shop where the grub was rounded up to suit a lazy trier. I have even thought about opening a shop like this with Organic locally grown produce and Cold water sourced fish ( reduced mercury or something).
So what does everyone else do?

Hi, After relentless testing on myself I have concluded our bodies tell us what it thinks is healthy by making us feel good or at least better than it did before we ate that food )starting 5 to 10 minutes after eating several bites of anything by itself. Hi there!
I find exactly the same issue - there seems to be less and less foods that are "safe" to eat as time goes on. Every week we seem to read of a new health scare.
We have become borderline vegetarians in our diet - even fish seems to be a problem now which had always been my "healthy" alternative to meat before. Free range and organic meat costs so much that it's too much for us to include regulary in our groceries.
We do have some good local organic shops near to us and I think you really can taste the difference - but it's still all so expensive!
A reasonably priced organic/health shop would get my business!

it is difficult these days to choose things that are labelled healthy and organic when in fact they are laced with e numbers, sugars, and other ingredients that are harmful to our bodies. i choose to eat things that suit my body. i have maintained my weight at 8 1/2 stone for the past 10 years. the secret - eating when i am hungry, taking amino acids, fruit juices (freshly squeezed or proven organic drinks that are fresh and have a 1 - 3 day lifespan). i dont eat anything with too many additives, i always read the label and i eat a lot of rice, pulses, veg, fruit and sometimes macrobiotic, tofu, quorn etc. its what your body enjoys rather than stuffing it with things you like the taste of! i enjoy chocolate in moderation and basically have stuck to a plain diet. now and again i will have a take out but thats a treat, as i limit my intake this doesnt harm me! it is when we overindulge and eat the wrong things that problems occur. i think the eating 3 meals a day is old hat and people are now looking at the fact that you should eat when your body is hungry. little and often is my moto, and including fruit and vegs is a necessity. meat in moderatoin 2 times a week if that for me and fish/fresh etc. its up to the individual but you are what you eat and i do tend to read the packets before i buy stuff

I believe all food should be healthy. Specially grown food should be unnecessary! This is something that the food industry has brought on themselves and us, thereby enabling the phenomenon "organically grown" food. If the farmers didn't put so much poisonous stuff on the fields to avoid unwished-for green things - not necessarily unhealthy ;) - we wouldn't have this dilemma.

And if the processing food industry didn't put all these unnecessary e-numered things in the prepared food, we might not have all the food allergies people suffer from.
Yes, I'm really angry on the farming- and food industry.
The only safe thing to do is to cook food out of raw material as much as possible. It often takes more time, but it is both cheaper and healthier. For example, have you realised how much sugar they put in our food? Much more than we would have done ourselves.
As for fish - any saltwater fish is ok.

On the subject of organic meat, I was in the supermarket and they had some organic chicken on sale as it was on its sell by date so I bought as many packets as I thought would fit in my freezer. While eating it , I thought this chicken tastes funny. And then I realised - it tasted like CHICKEN! I have been quite freaked out by this as I have realised that I had forgotten what chicken tastes like. Scary stuff. I will never buy chicken that isn't organic again unless in a real food emergency.
I have been so taken aback by my own reaction to this that I had to share it with you.

If people want to eat healthy, organic food, meat that ate natural food, really good veggies, surely we will have to take a step back from our current lives and go back to some of the old ways.
To have enough for everyone to have genuine produce we will have to all produce some of our own and share it locally, bring back the days were we all had a veggie garden, cared for a few chickens.
It was so good for us, exercise, fresh air, achievement, appreciation for what we had grown, a realisation of the potential to go without, and real good, healthy, tasty food.
Also, perhaps less pollution, less huge lorries transporting tins and packages of food, less rubbish for the land fill.
I think these days everything is produced on mass and the quality is diminishing rapidly, we have so many troubles to sort out and a lot of complaining takes place, but what are we doing?
of course we can't all start keeping chickens etc, but if you look around rurally you will find farmers markets, farms producing excellent organic produce which you can buy directly.
Even if it isn't totally organic it might be worth investing in as if these guys can survive and have your support and feed back things will get better.
There are still small holders about who will sell eggs and vegetables, worth seeking out, it may work out cheaper and will certainly taste better.

For you meat eaters who are worried about the animals they are eating, why not seek out farms and discover a farmer you like, see how the animals are kept. ie, are they happy in their lives? well fed? Leading a natual life and eating proper food...
If you find such a place it may be possible to buy some of the animals and also have some influence over the slaughter, final journey etc.
That would be really good as you would be supporting good farmers who need support and also providing yourself with good meat.
I tend to do this and have a local farmer a mile up the road, i then know what I am eating.

Hi,
the short answer to this is that the meat in question is horrendously expensive, as per costs in farming organically etc etc. Our local butcher has meat from various oranic farms locally which you can visit, but, his prices are extiortiant.
If we ate his products each day of the week, we would be paying him about £60 for the priviledge of eating a dead animal (s).
Just For the two of us. And the other short answer is that most of the people in the UK cannot afford this.
I am lucky, I can afford it, BUT, I won't do it. I prefer to have a mainly veggie diet, but, the other downside to this is what chemicals on those.???
You get caught all ways, if you have money, you are OK, if you don;t you suffer. If you can afford the best, you MAY live to see another dawn, if you can't you may well absorb chemicals and pestasides which eventually damage or compromise your immune system.
I am tired of seeing people tell others how healthy they COULD be, when all it actually comes down to if money and IF you can afford the products they sell.

There is a product called Veggie wash gillyann that you can get from health food stores that removes toxic residues from fruit and veg and keeps them fresher for longer.

My first reaction about Veggie wash was: what's in it? Is it healthy to eat it? If it takes out chemicals that do not wash out with plain water, then will the stuff itself not stay on the vegetables? DOe sit take out only the "nasties"or do minerlas and vitamins get also washed out with it?
I can find organic fruits and vegetables at my local supermarket, but oftne it comes back to the "organic' or 'locally grown' choice. No tto mention 'in season where produced' or orgnaic out of season. I mean we are in the middle of the winter, so what grows now in the UK? Options seem to be flying things from the other side of the world or storing last season's harvest in cold rooms... Well, I don't have a definite answer to all those dilemas!

I find that locally produced meat is far more reasonable from farmers etc, the meat from tescos etc is bad value, a small amount of rubbish meat for lots of money...seriously, look around and you'll find better!
Halal shops are often very good value for moeny too!

Hi, have you ever heard of Melaleuca? The company only just launched into the UK in October last year.
Similar healthy products to Neways but a different way to buy them and a larger range also.

I have heard that because of soil depletion and chemical fertilisers our fresh produce just doesn't contain the same levels of nutrition that it did 50 years ago.
I have also heard that obesity is linked to poor nutrition as our bodies are screaming out for vitamins and minerals that it doesn't get from our food so we crave to eat more.
Does anybody else have any thoughts on this?
