Reiki Questions
Hello everyone
I am currently learning about reiki. I have been doing quite a bit of research on the net and have also read a book called Practical Reiki by Mari Hall. I have also read some very interesting scientific articles about the body's energy which discuss the scientific evidence for reiki, which is fascinating.
My question is this; if reiki energy is in all of us and anyone can learn to direct it why do we need the attunement process? Of course I can see the importance and necessity for proper training but I don't really get what is happening during the 'attunement'. I have already begun practising treating myself in accordance with the instructions in Mari Hall's book and certainly sensed a warmth coming from my hands in certain areas. Could it be that I am already attuned?
Has anyone else experienced this or am I just misunderstanding?

My understanding is this... we are all natural healers, so feeling warmth from your hands when you treat yourself is not unusual. We all have universal life force energy within us, which is what you can feel. An attunement however,allows more of the universal energy to flow through you, and increases your connection to the Source, hence increasing your capacity to heal yourself and others.
Does anyone else have other comments?

We can all access the universal energy used in reiki, but how many of us really believe that we can? The attunement is a kind of formal ceremony to open us up to receiving the healing energy.
Once we are attuned we expect to receive the energy, therefore we do.

Everyone has the ablility to heal without being attuend to Reiki - some more than others, but during the attunement process one is fully opened up to the energy so that it can fullyflow through them.
I have to say I disagree with that. Being attuned to Reiki isn't a psychological event which makes us *think* we can chanel the energy. I know for me, there was aHUGE change in the energy flow after I was attuned & it definately was not psychological. I could feel it 10 times more&I could tell the differences between the energy frequencies.
Lynne, if you decide to do the Reiki 1 course & have your attunements, I'm sure you will notice the difference & the change in energy flow.

I am going to open a can of worms. IMO Yes you can be empowered with the reiki energy without an attunement from a physical person (Master). Reiki is not formal.
Reiki energy has been with us since the beginning of time, there is nothing new about it at all. There is no reason why you cannot be empowered the same way that Usui was. Remember that Usui was a mortal man (the same as all of us) who was empowered whilst meditating. What is so special about that? There are so many types and style of reiki offered today for example angel reiki, golden ray reiki etc etc. If you look at it logically just one empowerment can allow all of us to channel all styles and systems. I only say this because I have done it myself after being attuned by a Master and I can honestly say that it was more powerful than the physical attunement. And those that I have guided that way say the same.

Anyone can channel healing energy from spirit without receiving an attunement.
The way I understand it Reiki is onlykind of healing energy (albeit that it still leads back to The Source ) and to be able to channel reiki healing energy you need the attunement to connect you to it.
I'm not sure if I'm being clear but in a nutshell I'm saying that it's my belief that reiki isone healing energy (of which there are many) that needs an attunement for it to flow.

Just as the physical world is full of different people who all have something different to offer in any given situation, so is the spiritual plane full of energy beings who also have different things to offer.
In order to make use of these physical or spiritual connections we need to get in contact, either with the right physical being who can help us to sort something out or a spiritual energy being who chooses to help usdevelop spiritually.
Wecan in the physical realm, look on the Internet or search yellow pages for someone to help us achieve something, orwe can ask someone who has experience with something for their guidance as to whothey would recommend weshould get in touch with for this or that, that person is working as a go between.
We can search out our own spiritual energy beings to help us, or we can ask someone who has experience in such matters to help us get in touch with any existing energy connections that they have, this is the role of the master/teachers, the connections are forged between our own higher spiritual self and the energy beings, the master/teacher in reality has no part in the attunement/connection apart from initialising the connection.
A lot of the energy connections do not use symbols so apart from the master/teacher using their existing energy connection to introduce a physical being to a spiritual one, they really have no further part to play, in some of the systems they stay connected and monitor the connection until it is secure, with a symbol based system the symbols have to be introduced during the connection but the rest is the same.
A master/teacher comes into their own once the connection is formed for they will guide you in the use of the connection and show you how to get started in your own learning process which is different for each person.
You only need an attunement/connection process if you wish to practice one or more of theestablished systems, you can as I said earlier form your own connections without anyones interference, the way we use the systems is similar from system to system, so once you have established you own connection you can use most of the exercises that are well established, but you can't call yourself a Reiki practitioner unless you have a Reiki connection.

Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply. It seems as if reiki is different for everyone. All the various practices are a little confusing! I think I'm starting to get the picture.
My understanding is that as a natural form of energy it needs no particular belief system to operate. As individuals we may use it in connection with our own belief systems and whatever helps us to gain a better experience of it. Attunement to a particular system aligns us with that system and it's way of operating and understanding reiki but is not essential to our ability to practice reiki. It seems we must all find our own path. Am I correct here?
In the meantime I intend to practice self treatment daily. I may have more questions in due course!
I am finding this forum very useful in helping me to gain more understanding. Thanks again for your replies.:)

Since we are both physical and spiritual beings at the same time, then spiritual energy and the channelling of it is indeed natural to most of us, if you substitute the word spiritual or spirituality in place of Reiki then your picture should be complete for the moment;-)
To practice the energy modality called Reiki you need a connection to that particular system in order to use it, not all forms of spiritual energy channelling are a form of Reiki, you might well be channelling something completely different and there is nothing wrong with that at all, you will still be able to self heal as well as applying healing energy to help others.
You will become what is known as an independent energy healer of no particular energy modality, youwill be able toget insurance to practice it if you feel competent enough to go down that road one day :-)
Just go with the flow and see where it takes you.

Having said that there always seems to be that little bit of the unknown which is totally unscientific yet there included.

Hehe. Nice analogy, but IMO, not true in respect of Reiki. Intention causes many energy changes in the Universe. Attunements are powerful intention and are more than just psychological changes.

I agreethat once we understand how to do it, we can connect with any of the incalculable energies that are out there, andassuming they agree work with us to achieve our goals then we can forge a partnership and make good use of that energy.
There is a lot goes on in an attunement/connection processoutside of the teacher/pupil relationship, there is a realigning of our energy matrix, to some extent a lot of reprogramming that goes on as well, a lot of this is to getour life journey back on track, which has usually been side tracked all over the place.
Our energy channels need to be realigned, cleared and expanded so we can safely channel the energy we are seeking out, it is one thing to channel our own spiritual energies when healing but quite another thing to receive external energy and channel that through our energy matrix.

We all have 'Ki' energy within us, which is our life force energy and we can heal with this Ki, but if we do so, it depletes our own energy and over time it can cause us to become very ill. I would advise you not to heal with your own Ki, for your own health and well-being. Trained Qi Gong and Tai Chi healers use their own Ki, but they carry out special exercises to replenish it.
We need the attunement process to connect us to external universal energy. We are connected to this energy at birth, but pretty much most people lose this connection as they live their lives, experience emotional traumas and become detached from their true spiritual nature. As a result of this our vibrational frequencies drop, thus we are no longer connected to the universal energy of Reiki, because it is a very high frequency energy and we are too low frequency to channel it. Reiki attunements re-establish the connection with this universal energy (which some people call God) and enable the student to heal without using their own internal life force (Ki) energy. Thus it does not deplete their internal energy reserves.
The attunements are not enough for someone to call themselves a healer, because unless the attuned individual is trained in how to connect to the energy during healing, use the Reiki symbols and remain connected to the energy, they will be using their own life force and additionally will not be able to effectively treat conditions.
Contrary to popular belief amongst the Reiki community,an effective Reikihealer does not act as a straw, merely allowing the energy to take it's course. A number of studies have shown that using non-directed or non-focused intention, unconditional love, non-directed energy, have no healing effect, when used by both trained healers and non-healers. This was tested using in-vitro tumour cells and human DNA samples in test-tubes.
Studies have been undertaken using EM fields, both from electronic devices and from healers. The studies have shown that healing effects can be instigated in both human and animal subjects, when precise frequencies are used. The frequencies that are required are dependent on the tissue, organs, or cells, being treated. Yes, the body does produce its own EM fields and this can be strengthened through training, such as Tai Chi and Qi Gong. What makes Reiki different is that the energy used is external to the practitioner's own EM fields and to achieve this, the attunement process was developed by Mikao Usui. Some very gifted people may have a natural connection to the energy already, but this is not the norm.
Even those who have a natural connection need to know how to channel energy properly, using the correct frequency for the condition they are treating.
