Has anyone tried working by donation?

Hi:)
I've been absent form the forum for a while due to re-locating to Taunton.
I'm getting prepared to start teaching Reiki in the next six months. for the time being I'm working on my manuals (thanks Taggart and Paul for all the guidance and wisdom over the past few months).
When I run my first course, I've been toying with the idea of charging by donation. Naturally I'd inform the students of the usual range of charges for a 2 day course etc but the final payment, less a deposit in advance to cover the manual and certificates, would be up to them.
Its a bit of an experiment to see how much people feel the course, my instruction and Reiki is worth to them at that time.
Has anyone tried this?

it is an interesting idea, however I do think that some people will pay very little even tho they earn a lot. My friends give cash donations for treatments and although they are all high earners with similar expenses one friend in particular donates half of what the others do which is fine by me as I have a day job and Reiki isnt a business (yet) for me but it could be a problem if I was relying on the donations to earn a living rather than going towards the cost of insurance etc.
Having said all that I don't teach
LOL as I am typing , ringing in my ears is " trust the universe"!
I guess it is a gamble so good luck whatever you decide

That's interesting Soar.
I imagine that it is best to charge a standard rate for treatments (with flexibility for friends etc). However, I'm curious to know what financial value the students would apply.
I think I'd only try this for the first few courses if everything is going well and then set a fee when more established.

Interesting idea I have often thought about the donation idea as the cost of courses does exclude some people. I fopund in counselling when you offer a sliding scale of fees that what you loose with some you gain with others. I too will be interested how you get on.

Hi Nell,
Have a happy life in Taunton and welcome back to the forums.
Thank you for your very kind words.
It is very brave of you to try Teaching by donation. Most people will try to get something for nothing. Trust in the Reiki and try not to worry,
Please let us know how you get on.
The very best of luck in your endeavours.
As always

Hello,
I have not tried the donation idea, but since I do not want only "the rich and healthy" to attend my courses, I say that the price of the course is negotiable/payable by instalments. I find it surprising how many people just "vanish" when I answer to them saying "your prices are not expensive, but it is more than I can afford" "what can you afford? The fee is not cast in stone so that all who wnat have a chance to learn".
When I was still studying Shiatsu, I my price was "£5 - £20, depending on your budget". Many people just panicked! How could I not have a fixed price? Since when does the client decide on the price? I don; tknwo if having asked for a "donation" would have made a difference?...
Nell, give it a try and let us know how you get on wiht it!

Thanks Artemis and everyone for your insights.
It'll be a while before I can start teaching but I'll let you know how it all goes.

teaching by donation is fine but if you have to hire a room and you get 6 people who donate £ 10.00 each then it would not even cover your certs and manuals charges let alone the room.
maybe you could charge a regular rate and offer discounted rates for oap's and unemployed, ( proof required ) benefit book, pensioners would obviously be recognised by their age but there again many pensioners are not short of money.
just a thought

Thanks Dez:)
We're hoping to move into a new home soon, which has a large, heated garden chalet. If its not damp or uncomfortable I'd like to set that up as a reiki room for training and treatment (which will hopefully save on room hires).
I'd also make sure that the course deposit covered expenses for manuals and all the other expenses.
I can't envisage the donation idea as a permanant arrangement but I'm quite keen to see how it goes for at least the inital teaching.
Thanks for your insights:)

A very good idea, but I would limit your students to say five, and gain feedback from them.
