Holding tension and emotional energy in our bodies
:eek:As a yoga pratitioner and life coach I am often involved in discussions about:
- holding tension in our bodies
- holding emotions in different parts of our bodies
- holding tension in our neck, shoulders, hips etc.
Can anybody (masseuse, body work, energy workers, accupuncturists, chakrists et al) point me in the direction of some quality books, texts, online references, ideas, thoughts or comments on this subject.
In particular I am interested in the way that certain emotions / mind-conditionings manifest in certain parts of our body. For example, a chronic embedded soft-tissue hip ache equates to ????? going on in our mind or lives. Also any linkage to chakras would be helpful.
I have witnessed through my yoga practice and teaching that yoga and meditation can dissolve these held tensions... and thus clear the mind.
I am fascinated by this subject and would appreciate any quality input you folks may have.... beyond fluffy generalised statements of "we hold stress in our back" (which is all I can find on the web.
Is there a name for this science? Does a body map exist?
Many thanks in advance for your input.

Hello Lee,
One book that is worth a look is You Can Heal Your Life by Louise L Hay. If you look towards the back of the book there is a section on ailments in various part of the body and attitudes they are linked to.
The Healing Power of Illness by Dethlefsen and Dahlke sets out that 'symptoms are bodily expressions of psychological conflicts' and it's also interesting to dip into (I've never been able to sit down and read it through although I am probably missing out!).
I'll watch this thread with interest because it's a fascinating topic about which I'd love to know more.

Excellent advice from Siobhan. This book is a must have and in all the time I have been using it on myself and in others, it is exactly as Louise Hay says in her book. I also know that she has another book out that has a section all about the back, and each vertebrae and disc I believe has a different emotional meaning. I must get this new book.

Well done Jules for recommending Donna Eden's excellent book! I will second that choice of course and also recommend 'Your Body Speaks Your Mind' by Debbie Shapiro. ISBN 0-7499-1595-1
A fascinating subject and I'm sure there's lots to read out there.

Hi
I am nuew to the site but a good place to start would be Loiuse Hay and Caroline Myss. Both are extremely good at explaining the emotional side to illness and strees.
