Acupressure

Could anyone please advise me why acupressure should not be performed on a pregnant women. I do know that certain points such as the inner ankle point are contraindicated for pregnancy, but I was looking for a more in depth reason and why such points are dangerous. I also need to know why acupressure should not be performed if there is a infection present.
Thanks

Hi Victoria
Acupressure should not be applyed to the centre of the 'swirl' on your big toe, as this will stimulate the pituitary gland, responsable for the production of oxytocin and start the onset of contractions. Not what you want to happen.

The inner ankle point is the uterus area in reflexology and shoud be avoided in pregnancy for obvious reasons. In late pregnancy it may be gently massaged to help ready for birth.

There is an acupressure point which is the end of a meridian I believe, on the side of the 5th toe I think! can anyone confirm this?? This point should be avoided during preganacy, but can be used to turn a baby in breach position late on.
In reflexology we cannot treat during a fever a) because the client may be infectious and b) because the body should be left to fight the illness at this point.

that point does indeed turn babies but should not be used before 38 weeks. (its kinda along the side of the nail, has to be given quite a tweak!).
i have also been told, and mentioned here before, TCM points of bladder 60 & spleen 6. it is believed that these points when stimulated, can expel the contents of the uterus.
and, yes, as waywood says, the pituitary and hipothalamus should be treated more gently, along with the inner pelvic region.

Rosie, Is the point for turning babies on the inside or outside of the 5th toenail?? I have another lady thinks she may be breach. I used this point before at 38 weeks and it worked I just can't remember where it is exactly!

its on the outside of the toe.
i think its advised to wait until 38 weeks on the basis that the baby may turn again... mind you, if it is breach, they quite often c section at 38 weeks!

Hello,
No reason to avpid accupressure totally during pregancy. Just the points that "bring energy down" should be treated with caution. Yes, inner ankle, outside of 5th toe (great with moxa for turning breach babies), top of the trapezius muscle on the shoulders. If the pregancy is going to be OK anyway, then those points won't cause any problems, but if anything is a bit borderline, then you don;'t wnat to provoke any unwanted effects. Better be safe than sorry. I have never heard of these points to have taken care of any unwanted pregnancy...
Accupressure shoul dbe performes when a cold is looming because you might open up some chanels that will allow the infection to go straight in. But it is fine to use "expelling" points, like Large Intestine 4, on the web between the thumb and the index finger.

Hi Victoria
I am doing accupressure at the moment asnd have been told that accupressure should be avaioded throughout preganacy because it raises the blood pressure which could cause health problems to the baby. It is also the same reason that you cannot do accupressure when an infection is presant as it stimulates blood flow and this can cause the infection to spread. They also say it is unwise to treat cancer as the blood flow can increase to the tumour making it feed more.
If you need anymore advice let me know.

First time I hear this one. So what about people with high blood pressure? And what about all the points that alleviate high blood pressure?

Answers:

Hi artemis
I understand what you are saying but I am just going by what my course notes say and what I have learnt previously about acupressure.

HI,
I do understand that when on a course sticking to notes is best for exam purposes. However in real life as a therapist you wil hav eto decide for yourself if you stick to notes on the course 'blindly' or check out for yourself their validity... And ask mor equestion to your teacher if things don't seem logic.
I practice Shiatsu, and yes, we are cautious with some of the points in the first term, but pregnancy is not a contra-indicated condition.

Hi Artemis
Having thought of this more I am sorry I actually posted my last thread, I know that it is just a learning thing that has been posted and I am mainly doing this for the accupressure massage part oif it as I am hoping to develop the meridain healing through channelling reiki through them but I have a long long journey yet to fully realise all the points and what they are associated with.
Please accept my apologies
