my mum's feet

My mum has developed the most dreadful dry skin all over the sole of her feet. I mean so dry that it is cracking as she walks. It is around the heels like lots of us (in fact that's where it started) but now it is all over. It is deeply cracked and bleeding. She has been to the Gp a few times and he has given her creams of various types. He has since given her a chest xray - she is getting the results next week as she is a chronic asthmatic - well it has recenlty cleared up for the first time in almost 40 years - and has asked her about her digestion. I just wondered if anybody out there had any words of wisdom. her feet are so bad and dry and cracked that I haven't touched them. Thanks.

My Mum has this problem, I have suggested to her that she eats ground flaxseeds as very dry skin can be caused by a need for more omega-3 fatty acids. She also uses "new skin" in the cracks which helps stop them from hurting so much.
Hope this helps

Hi Bexx
Sorry to hear that your Mum has sore feet. I really do sympathise!!
These cracks around the heel are usually a sign of endocrine imbalnce, believe me I know, I've suffered for years.
Fisrt I would be inclined to apply as much aqeous cream as is possible to prevent the cracks deepening.
Apply lots at night, then wrap the heels and feetwith a soft pair of loose fitting socks, preferably a pair that do not loose their fibres( these fibres that get stuck in the cracks are really painful!) (you may even need to use a gauze, no cotton wool!)
I would do this as often as poss.
Advise Mum to keep feet, heels particularly protected in socks as much as poss, this will help when walking.
Once skin has become more supple and less sore, I would move onto a cream with urea. This works great. BUT be warned if the cracks are still too deep, this cream will sting like crazy!!! If you find that the cream stings, the discomfort will pass.
In the mean time drink plenty of still water to help with rehydration. Address/ reducedrinks that contain caffeines.
Keep up with omega oils, the best ones that I have found are Omega Nutrition. E and B capsules. From goodherbalist or top notch health suppliers.
Work the feet particularly the thyroid reflex,(lateral side of big toe,, as well)don't be surprised if this is REALLY sharp.
Also work endocrine system thoroughly. Work kidney- bladder to help eliminate toxins and waste.
Once signs of severe cracking and pain on heels has reduced, see a very caring and gentle chiropodist that will carefully remove any excess hard skin, this will help cracks to repair.
It will take a while to get to this stage.
I would apologise to your Mum in advance, before you start massaging the creams into her feet, as it will be uncomfortable, but believe me it will work.
I really do hope that this helps.
I won't say that my heels are perfect, but then my endocrine system still gives me the odd problem, BUT they and my endocrine system have vastly improved.
Good Luck Bexx.
Love to you and your Mum

hi, I am training at the moment, and quite a few of use prefer to use cream instead of powder. We use"skin food" by Weleda and it is excellent for dry skin. We have had lots of comment on how good the feet feel with this cream.its excellent when put on at night and also just in general.
Good Luck

I had this and turned out I had a fungal infection which cleared up with medication.

When I was studying I had a case study lady who had extremely dry, cracking skin on one foot only! The doc diagnosed Athlete's Foot and when treated it cleared up. I would definitely get a podiatrist or chiropodist to take a look, to make sure it isn't a fungal thingie that the doc just hasn't thought of. Skin's a funny thing, can be so many causes with skin problems as discussed here. I hope it can get sorted out quickly.
