Studying Spinal Reflexology?

Hello! I"m in the US, and I'm a certified reflexologist. However, spinal reflexology was not covered at all in my course. Where can you learn this?
And is there a good book available on this subject?

Morley College, near Waterloo, London
1 day course is frequently held for qualified therapist.

Hello Natural Treasure
Hope life is treating you well out there in the U.S.
Thoughts free flowing - I'm sure you would've covered spinal reflexology in your course but perhaps not too intensively.
You will have worked along the spine in your regular reflex application of treatments and I'm sure you will have covered nerve supply , pairs of nerves & their specific ogans they supply etc etc in A&P.. there i would guess you have most of the relevent info - with some hard work, applied study, much research you will be specialising in this knowledge,
regarding all info available from the holistic aspects of the spine too.
Thus all Combined - my guess is - you will have much of the info on the days workshop.Really when you think about it - we haven't new feet, we havent new methods set in concrete - there is much challenging info & many new ideas
but you have all the valuable info to hand within the soles of the feets.
There lies the ancient knowledge from our ancestors & our present life.
No doubt the course is fascinating - but you too can explore, achieve & contribute your findings - just the same as all of the ' teachers ' in all Reflex centres , colleges etc. They too started where we are ..but some choose to teach some choose to work in clinics , some choose both - but one day an abundance of wisdom & learned knowledge will be oyurs.
Basically what I mean to wish for you - is even if there are no courses next to you in the US, no relevent books etc ..you have all you neeed..
if you're dedicated & interested enough - you will find your spinal reflexology just the same..
Good Luck & Happy Research
PS. .there are many aspects regarding the spine aswell as the anatomical & physiological - do check out Metamorphosis too - I think theres a lady in America called Cindy Silcock..I have her email address somewher I'll hunt it out & email it to you. She may give you much info about her perspectives regarding the spine.

You beat me to it Pre! I apologise Tona if the name was a bit misleading. I think in my other related post I made it sound as though the reflexology was practised on the spine itself :D As Pre says it's looking at the spinal nerves from the perspective of the foot/hand, and what areas these nerves supply. I suffer from irritable bowel, and we found when treating me that the area of the first lumbar vertabrae was tender. Tenderness in L1 may point to irritable bowel, constipation or colitis, for example.
Tona, I'm a very newly qualified reflexologist and this course really gave me a confidence boost. What Pre says is very true though, there is plenty of room for exploration and I hope that with time I will have the confidence to explore, use my intuition and who knows, do some research.
Happy hunting to all!

Hello! Yeah I understood the relation to the feet, and not directly on the spine.
However, all I was taught was basic regions of the spine corresponding to the feet. Do you work as specific point on your feet for your L1, or just the whole lumbar region? Obviously you would work the whole region, but do you isolate a specific point as well?
I have a lot of hip pain, and reflexology has help me tremendously. I have a sublaxation of the spine, and I"m hoping the chiroprator will help with it.

Hi Siobhan - what a lovely post - but I think we're all new within the realms of reflexology even if it is an ancient practice. . . I think we always will be learning.
Each time we touch the soles of anothers feet we open the gateways to our souls, our fundamental health & well being, the cogs in the machinery, our very thought patterns burried deep within the sub conscious . . . thus we have research *every single time *!
Siobhan you're already doing it - just make sure you keep your notes :-)
I have a great diagram ( somewhere !! ) of the spinal nerve supply & corresponding organs.. I'll try to hunt it out then get back to you & see if you want a copy.
Please may i just add - give yourself a boost - please have the confidence to close your eyes ( maybe not with a new client rather a friend or family member :) & do whatever you feel - explore, take risks.. do what feels natural, feel whats beneath teh skin where your fingers & thumbs are drawn to, at times do what you haven't been taught to do
- this is fundamentally what is soo wonderful about Reflexology - you will bring your very own unique qualitites to the therapy - the only way to expand is to explore.
Trust me - I was my teachers nightmare - as soon as i held a foot instinctively i had many ways, routes & methods i wanted to do - none were by the book so to speak - I had to be coached almost just to get me through the exams - but luckily my tutor had faith as somehow even if she couldnt see how I was doing it - she knew i was achieving the required results. Reaching areas that frankly some dont ever reach even with their finest book perfect hooking technique.
So explore you , your intuitive, instinctive feelings & apply as they may well be the best teacher you'll ever have.

Hi Natural Treasure - I work the whole of the spine
and its a long time since i've isolated an area on the spine to specifically treat but yes for chronic conditions or maximum application for specific ailments I suppose i would go back & keep working
( but usually - there are many ailments presented under the one label )
I will hunt out this chart...& try to write up in easy access the innervation.
But ..it will take a while so keep checking back !
:-)
Meanwhile - I think the Laura Norman book has a great spine - nerve connection & diagrams...or is it Ane Gillanders... ooh blimey who was it ..
maybe check your A&P as it really should've been covered in there.

Yes yes yes! You are so right about using intuition Pre. My course didn't exactly encourage it because I suspect that like yours they just wanted to get you through it in one piece (maybe they are glad to see the back of students like us)! But practising Reiki has been a big help with getting me to listen to my inner voice and do things I can't explain, because they simply feel right and my hands want to do them. I'm enjoying doing stuff I couldn't have done before and just experimenting with new moves and techniques. OK, so they probably aren't 'new new' but they're new to me and it's all very exciting!
This is what I really love about HP. You get to discuss important stuff with people who have lots of experience but are so modest about it that you don't feel intimidated. Everyone's got stuff to say and this is a safe place to do that.
OK, dewy eyed moment over! I have the Laura Norman Reflexology Handbook and there's a diagram on page 39 that may be the one you mentioned Pre. Nice and clear!
I've got a wonky pelvis Tona but I've found that I seem to get less pain and bother since practising and receiving reflexology - we are great advertisement for reflexology aren't we! Regarding the individual vertebrae, I imagine all schools' methods vary but we learned to walk the spine counting the 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic, 12 lumbar. Didn't count the sacral vertebrae out individually but some people do.
Here's to marvellous magical feet (and hands), one day perhaps we will truly know everything there is to know, but I think that would be too boring so let's just enjoy the mysteries of reflexology for now.

Hello! Yes I would love to see that chart.
As for closing the eyes that's a great idea, and I'll start with my own 2 feet.
Really that's the only way to learn to use your own intuition, as no one can teach it to you.
As for my course I paid $1300 and got ripped off. The man sounded very professional and answered all my precourse questions to my liking.
However, he's a massage therapist, and he taught me nothing more than recreational rub the feet. I felt so cheated, and one day would really love to learn from someone that's been praticing for years. Never meet anyone here that knows anymore than I do. Usually they end up asking me questions.
Sad but I ended teaching myself through several books and videos.
This is a whole other topic here. What about Color Therapy and Reflexology combined. I believe that will give a much more complete healing!
I have certifications in both. Does anyone do them both together? I would love to hear more about it if you do!

i have seen books and courses/ workshops on colour reflexology. i dont know how the two combine.
i have a client with an arthritic knee and i have put a crystal on her knee whilst doing reflex... lol its hard to make it stay there and i often have to stick it! i dont always use the same one... i am in my experimental, which one do i fancy today, stage!
hope you find what you are looking for. i was surprised by your comments about the US being backward about reflex.

Hello! Acutally I could be making a fortune right now if I just wanted to rub peoples feet and do what I call recreational reflexology. There was a comment made in another post that American's tend to do things for money. And unfortunately that's so true. However, I'm the exception and have to sort through all the mud and tell people I don't due massage. I could be rakeing in the dough if I wanted to be a foot rubber, but I don't and wont.
I have a crystal course paid for and am working my way toward it. Currently studying the acupressure facelift right now. That I do for the money. I'm studying acupressure for health and healing of course, but when you mention natural face lift eyes light up and the dough will flow out then. It's what's paying my bills. Primarily because I use the Natural FaceLift with it.

People here are crazy about their doctors. People equate doctors hear with God, because the go to school so long. It's a status thing to say my doctor is so and so. We will come around, but I believe only because our medical system is going to collapse. A few are coming to it now, but the masses will only come when their rich doctor won't treat them because they're broke.

Hi NaturalTreasure
Pauline Wills (in the UK) writes books and hold courses on Colour Reflexology. I'm sure you will find lots of her books on a search on Amazon.

Sarah is right, Pauline Wills is worth a look if the book I have is anything to go by. I think it's simply called Colour Reflexology. NT, I'm so sorry your reflexology course didn't work out very well. The facelift method sounds fascinating though! I recently met a lady who does something similar and I hope that people will choose that route over more invasive methods as we learn more about our bodies and treat them with more respect. Good luck to you!

Every time I read one of Pre's posts I kick myself (gently of course!) that I don't live near enough to get a treatment fron her.:(
I have started closing my eyes a lot when doing reflexology. I have also not stuck to the way Reiki is taught and just do my own ting!;) Oooooo.....naughty.
One problem I do have though is when doing reflexology I am so relaxed and the room is so warm etc that I sometimes struggle to stay awake!![&:] Think I need to burn some refreshing oils, but does anybody else have this problem - or am i just not getting enough kip?[:o]

Answers:

Candie, I have exactly the same problem, especially if I do four or five treatments on the trot. I always burn citrus oils until maybe the very last treatment, when I might add some lavender, but I often feel myself dropping. I find I have to go outside quickly between treatments and grab some fresh air.
