Help getting into a club?

Morning everyone
I was hoping I might be able to get a few tips on how to get into a club in order to practice my sports massage?
I'm currently doing my VTCT Sports Massage diploma and need to get into a club in order to be able to practice and do my 40+ hours practical sessions outside of the college environment.
Trouble is, I've approached several clubs/people already and have been turned down.
What am I doing wrong? What can I do to get in with a club and start practicing.
HELP :(

Can no one help?

Answers:

What sport(s) have you been involved in? It helps if you can demonstrate that you have a background of participation in a particular sport. But I would certainly recommend approaching local running clubs: many long-distance runners have a chronic need for sports massage.

Hi Alan
Thank you so much for your reply.
I'm involved with horse riding mainly, as well as swimming. I can't say I've ever been involved in anything other than riding, being a horse rider and owner for the past 27 years. The only "club" I'm a member of is Endurance GB and I'm already covering several of their events with my business tent starting from April, but at those events, I won't necessarily be doing any sports massage - it depends entirely on what the horse riders want at the time.
I have approached the sports co-ordinator at the university I work for and have been told that they already have university students who are studying physiotherapy so that's a no go, I've approached my local swimming pool but they already have two sports massage students going there. The local rugby club don't want to know and several other clubs already have their own physiotherapists so don't see there being any need to have a sports massage trainee as well.
I've senta letter and followed it up with a telephone call or personal visitwhere possible. I'm just not surewhat I'm doing wrong.

Does the place where you are studying sports
massage know of anywhere local to you? Have you approached
leisure centres/ gyms? Do you know any people who do running by
themselves - does it have to be a club specifically? Do you know anyone
who belongs to a club who can recommend you to their friends?
If you've been involved in riding - how about riding stables?
Personally, (after working at a couple of leisure centres) I'd do the
face to face visit before the letter - then you can gauge what they
want and talk about where you can specifically help them.

Most of the students seem to be having the same issues. We've approached the clubs which took students from the college last year but it seems that one of the rival colleges in the area has got in there first so they've already got 2 or more students from the other college doing
practice sessions with them and they don't want any more.
Have you approached leisure centres/ gyms?
Yes, withoutsuccess. The local gymdown the road from where I live has their own
physiotherapist andmassage practitioner working there. And it's the same again, there are
already afew sports massage people from theother college already in situ.I've also asked at the university where I work and have been told that as we have sports therapy andphysiotherapy students already, myoffer of volunteering to go to the training sessions and matches to do sports massage with the various university sports clubs won't be required. The local swimmingbaths also have their own physiotherapist andstudents practicing there. Maybe the area I live in is just saturated with us all wanting to dosomething along the same lines [&o]

Unfortunately not. I've put up adverts on some of the forums I frequent asking if anyone would like to have free sports massage therapy if they are runners, cylists etc, etc and if they are in a club and think that I might be an asset to get in touch but so far, I've not had any take up.
Do you know anyone who belongs to a club who can recommend you to their friends?
I've asked several of my friends, parents, aunts and uncles so hopefully something will come up from them. Looks like I might have to travel a good way away from where I'm based to find a club.

Thanks, I'll do some more door knocking this weekend, and thanks also for your pointers/help, it's really very much appreciated.

Another thought - you might like to post this in
the Students forum (I only picked it up on browsing through the forums
cos I don't usually come in here!!)

Looks like I might be sorted.
One of my cousins friends is a trampolinist and she's looking into getting me in at her club. Keep your fingers crossed for me :)

Answers:

Shanahan,
If the Trampolinist club doesn't pay off, try local fire stations and other emergency services. Sports massage doesn't just have to be about sports.
When Istudiedfor mysports massage qualificationI approached my local police stations and Fire Stations as many of the officers employedin both fields have to have very high fitness levels. I gained much experience and it was perfect as it was different from the norm andmy "bodies" were more than willing to assist in being case studies for me.
Good Luck

Great idea Hurley thanks.
I had some success over the weekend and will now be going to a skatepark every Monday evening and a rugby club every Wednesday evening so should now have my 40+ hours sorted.
Now the hard work starts ;)
