What is intuition?

What is intuition?
How does it work?
What are the processes involved?
It seems to me that it must be more than "just doing what feel right", or just knowing. How do you know? Why does it feel right?
How do you seperate intuition from Guidework?
In understanding how i am working, I don't often stop and ask myself how and why. But I'd like to know different perspectives on this.
Thanks

Hi Meiah,
I used to have a bit of a question mark over this word "intuition" when it comes to Reiki. I used to interpret it as just a "feeling" of doing the right thing or not. That, for me, involved a lot of thinking of "how does this feel, right, wrong, good, bad" etc, which really overcomplicated everything for me & didn't do much good.
I now see intuition, when it comes to healing, as not thinking about it & just doing what comes naturally. For me, not thinking about it or trying to analyze it plays a big part in it.
When I learned the intuitive Reiji ho method at 2nd degree, it made even more sense as my hands moved on their own - rather a weird sensation the first time I experienced it! As long as I get my head out of the way, then my intuition is at it's best.

So in Reiji Ho, what is actually happenning here? I also practice Reiki Ho, and yes, it is amazing. But realting this to our physicality, or our energy senses, what part of you is interacting with the client to establish how your hands should move?
I accept that it is not a conscious movement, so therefore it is subconscious, but how do you sense where to go. How do you bring it into your consciousness to fully understand what is happenning, or what the hibiki you feel relate to for the client?

Aperson's intuition depends on their what their bodyhas done with their life's experiences. What happens to us is processed in our physiological and brain processes. So someones intuitive response to a spider in the corner of a room might be fear and panic(because of past experience has caused some hyper arousal which their body and brain has stored) and someone else's intuitive response might be "What about it?", because spidershave not appeared in theiir emotional radar.
It's a bit liek soldiers being drilled into certain behaviour patterns - bonding with their squadron, training their physiology to keep calm under circumstances which would have most of us snivelling wrecks.I believe there are studies which show that the betterthe soldier is drilled the better they cope and the less likely they are to suffer from PTSD: I read something about the British Army being better prepared than the Americans. Sorry, I've gone a bit [sm=offtopic.gif]but I want to say that it's nothing to do with how you think, but how you train. Pavlovian in fact.
If we had to think about everything before we acted we would never have evolved to where we arenow - this is basic animal, limbic system stuff.
As far as Reiki is concerned you are dealing with a client (or yourself)whose story and body will resonate with what you already know, within your physiology - not just your brain. Some people make us feel sick/upset/happy before we have time to rationalise our feelings.
And that's the simple bit for me.
The other bit, which as far as Reiki is concerned isalmost always more importantis going with energy. I can't explain that without resorting to the supernatural, but Giles has probably got it sorted..............

Thankyou Sharon.
So, to paraphrase (and correct me if I have misunderstood), your body picks up information from your client, which all happens subconsciously. This is translated by your brain according to your previous experiences, (getting to your brain via the neural and perineural system?) at which point it can become conscious thought / realisation.
Meantime, your body is reacting to that information (ie in Reiji Ho), moving your hands to the correct position for your client.
The strength of your intuition is as a result of training (as with your soldiers), and so can be developed, thus strengthening the link between subconscious physical sensations and the translation into consciousness.
However, you will only pick up from your client what is in your own experience, what can resonate with you?
Thus, intuition is a physical process. Sound right?
Is therea distinction between and intuitive response (as above) and an instinctive response (ie spiders).

Yesthat's what I mean.
Hmm - instinctive meaning that as humans we are born with a common aversion or liking, which is not dependent on culture or learned behaviour? That would be different from the type of thing I was talking about. That would be something that would havecome about through Natural Selction and given us an evolutionary advantage.
I'm thinking about snakes, and vomit and faeces. But a child might have no fear of snakes and babies and young toddlers are quite happy to play in their own faeces............Would you agree? We do have a universal liking for sweetness, and breast milk is very sweet - much sweeter than cows milk. I remember breast feeding my eldest son as I was eating a jam doughnut when he was a tiny baby and a bit of sugar droppednear his mouth and he lapped it up! That was instinctive, I would say.
What we are born with is a set of neonatal reflexes such as if you touch a baby's cheek, it's head willturn in that direction (to find the nipple), and others and they are to help it survive. That, I would say is instinctive, and different from my defintition of intuitive.

I would perhaps argue that learned response and culture are the same thing. Both result in a certain behaviour, but I take your point.
So, where do you stand on inherited knowledge or traits, psychic ability for example? Would these then be passed down to you physically, and alter your responses to information picked up by your body etc etc and so alter your intuitive response?
(Love thinking on a Thursday!!)

My a lot of interesting topics at the moment :-)
A lot of the time when performing energy work, what we refer to as intuition is actually guidance, we are in communication with our higher self and energy guides, and we are also communicating with the healees higher self at the same time, this is where the insight to heal comes from.
This information has to be proceed by our minds, and this is where the process sometimes falls down, did I actually feel or hear that, is that really what is wrong, or the old ego can step in withI know better that that so I will ignorewhat is revealed, so intuition/guidance is good when we learn to listen properly but until then it a bit hit and miss.
Energy scanning is IMO the second thing that should be taught to any perspective energy worker, the first thing is to get a feel for the energy we are working with, once that is firmly established, then they need to learn to scan for problems in the energy matrix, the rest just falls into place then with the use of intuition/guidance.

OOO!
OK culture - semantics here, but I would define culture as being a wider, community environment, and this is a part of learned behaviour. But not everyone in our (eg) Western culture has a spider phobia, which is often passed on through the generations through learned behaviour at the mother's or father's knee.
And yesanother part of the story is genetic inheritance. Wouoldn't it be greatif there were a twin study onpsychic ability (ie twins seperated at birth and raised in different families)? Perhaps there is a study somewhere, evencase studies which have findings either way.
OK now I have to hoover, clean and dust! And still think!

I used to clean houses when my children were
small, to provide a income but be able to look after my children at the
same time. I took my children with me (with the agreement of the person
who I was employed by)
There was a house that I had a bad experience in - I was frightened by
a large black dog at the bottom of the stairs. This person had two
dogs, but it was neither of them and I am not frightened of dogs (I
have my own!) I always felt it had a bad atmosphere - I couldn't have
lived there. I learned that this person had dabbled in witchcraft, and
I don't think that she knew what she was doing.
So that's the background. The point is that my daughter (aged about 2)
would not come into that house - she screamed if I took her in. She
preferred to sleep all the time in her pushchair in the garden.
I have never worked out whether that was direct result of the
atmosphere that I felt there (ie her own intuition/ inherited ability
to sense atmosphere from me) or was that from me (learned response -
she took on my feelings)?

This is an interesting one, LavenderRose as this is could be construed as a kind of "paradigm" question.People who believe in the paranormal would say you were tapping into malevolent energies because you are psychically aware, and so was your daughter. Some people who have a "behaviourist"viewpoint, based in the material worldwould say that the black dog reminded you of a subconscious memory and that your daughter picked up on your fear. A Jungian analystwould suggest thatyou had tapped into the "collective unconscious" where big black dogs at the bottom of stairs have some kind of significance for us all, and your daughter sharedyour response. A Freudian analyst would probably relate the big black dog at the bottom of the stairs to a fear of pubic hair growth when you were a teenager (LOL- totally made upbut I've heard worse!) etc etc. There are so many paradigms and they all seem true to those who engage in those views.
Andwell done for following the example of my post and talking about cleaning and intuition in the same post!

Going back to the original post now.

To me intuition is a state of awareness. When we're in this state we are 'listening' to what the other person's energy is communicating to us- but we're not trying to figure it out or work out what it means, we're just in an open state of listening. You don't actually need the person to be in front of you to be accessing this, you just need to be resonating 'in tune' to the other person.

This is a bit of a silly analogy, but hopefully it works. No doubt you've seenthe film 'What Women Want'. To get to know the female main character Darcy, Nickliterally gets inside her head and knows what she's thinking. Well, fortunately you can't get inside someones head using intuition, but you can get into a state of meditative awareness where you can access 'information' about that person. Often this comes in the form of imagery or kinesthetic insight.
On a scientific level, this state of awareness is known as bio resonance and entrainment.Physics teaches that everything at its most basic level is energy, a vibrating 'packet' of energy. This 'packet' contains data, or characteristics, in the form of energetic vibrations. In the universe there are loads of these packets of energy (human beings for one) with memories, hopes, dreams, health status, everything, all encoded within us as energetic vibrations. As is natural, these packets of energy interact with each other, but here's the key: the data inscribed deep within us can only be accessed by another packet of energy if the other packet is vibrating or resonating at the same energetic level as the other one. Most people refer to this as being 'in tune' with someone else, or being on their wavelength, and that's pretty much what intuition is, really.
Hopefully, that all makes some sense.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'guidework'- do you mean when people work with what they term their 'spirit guides'?

Great Post Az, but you had me puzzled about the doughnut for about an hour.......I'd forgotten aboutmy previous post and thought the doughnut must be to do with the stairway, and the black dog,...........extremely Freudian!
But no cleaning?
