trouble getting to sleep

Has anyone a quick sure way to go to sleep at night.
I am in my fifties and when I was younger I had no trouble sleeping at all. Nowdays though it is a different story. Some nights, not all, I will go to bed and lie there for hours before dropping off. What's more anoying is hubby falls asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow.
At this point in time I do not have worries that keep me awake. I am not anxious about anything. I do not drink coffee or tea before retiring. I can watch TV which acts like a drug and I have to fight sometimes to keep myself from falling asleep whilst slouching uncomfortably in front of it. I then drag myself up to bed and once I am in the comfortable bed I find myself wide awake.
What I would like is may be some special breathing techniques that clear your mind and relax you to such an extent that you drop off easily.

Hi Orangeblossom
Do you have a discman or walkman? I have a CD by someone called Jason Light and listening to his lovely voice talking me through a meditation sends me off. You can PM me for more details.

Meditation CDs send me to sleep too!
I think you can actually get tapes for insomnia in New Age shops and I think they may even have them in Ottakers.
What normally works for my stepson (who has trouble sleeping) is a cup of hot milk with two spoons of honey in.

Is there a TV in your bedroom? If it's on stand-by mode it emits noise or something on a frequency that can keep you awake, or at least stop you achieving deep sleep. it used to affect me...

Hello orangeblossom,
Youcoudl dry putting a few drops of lavender and/or orange flower essential oil on your pillow. At times the nervous system seems to foget how to "switch off" so tha twe can fall asleep. The Chinese scall the syndrom "too tired to fall asleep"!! Reaidng a few page sof a relaxing book while in bed could help.
If the problem happens often enough, you might want to consider some therapies like Shiatsu, reflexology, Reiki...
Hope this helps,
Artemis

Oh, I forgot to mention there is a free ebook on the site that mentions breathing techniques, but I think they must be changing it at the moment.

have you moved your bed recently? maybe you're in a bad feng shui position. or perhaps there's a corner object facing you. or perhaps your side of bed is over a ley line. they sometimes change directions. cats love to sleep over these!
one of my favorite authors and meditation guides is orin/sanaya and daben/duane
on their site they have meditation samples and some music for free.
http://www.orindaben.com/meditations...editations.htm
i'm not sure if they start off with breathing techniques on these samples...the full tapes they do, but the music in itself makes me [sm=sleep.gif] before the meditation is over.

Dear orange Blossom,
Sleep troubles indicate troubles within the body regarding energy flow, you need it to flow to relax and for the body to rest and repair.
Relaxation is improtant, however it doesn't just happen from sitting down and watching TV, this can leave the body in an inbetween state which is not conducive to good rest.
I suggest some reiki treatments to get you back on track as well as making sure you are getting good nutrition from your diet.
Exercise will help solve sleep troubles in most cases i find, activity and frsh are tend to work.
So, what exercise do you take so far? How is your general lifestyle, do you have to spend long periods of time sitting or fairly staionary? For example a lot of driving or sitting at a computer tend to cause sleep troubles.
if this is the case you might try to include a daily walk and some aerobic exercise, also yoga is invaluable for this trouble.
Before you go to bed, after watching TV etc, I suggest a ten minute walk outside, a brisk one as well, this will enable the body and mind to relax afterwards.
Then when you go to bed and lie down go through a thought process of asking each part of your body to relax and rest, starting with your feet and working up, hope this helps.
