St Johns Wort????
Hi
I have heard that St Johns Wart is a natural mood lifter. I have heard that you should not take it with some other medication (such as the contraception pill)
What side effects does this have then?

Dear JoGirl
It is good for depression and also Post Trauma, panic attacks etc. Good idea to also take 1000mg of Calcium per day as well. It works well with the energy system being a vibrational and herbal medicine. It can also be taken as a flower essence.
Doctors inform me that the only medication that this interferes with is serious medication for serious conditions like heart disease.

Hi Jo, it would be good to take it under the supervision of a herbalist, who will know how herbs and prescription drugs can react to one another.

Hi Jo
St Johns Wort can interfere with the uptake and absorbtion of different medicines, if in doubt consult your doctor......a qualified medical herbalist (not someone who just sells it!) can advise too.....

I knew someone who was on the pill and then started taking SJW cos of stress at work and then ended up getting pregnant.
It's mighty effective, but like the others have said, check it out with your doctor first

Hi Jo…
I use Micronor contraceptive tablets and on the Information Leaflet that comes with the tablets it clearly states the following:-
ARE YOUR TAKING OTHER MEDICINES?
(It goes into several medications you should not use while using these contraception tablets)
…and then it says: -
The herbal remedy St John’s Wort should not be taken at the same time as this medicine. If you already take a St John’s Wort preparation, stop taking the St John’s Wort and mention it to your doctor at your next visit.

Dont want to put a downer on this, but are you aware that SJW is just as risky as taking any other anti - depressant?
I am not 100% as to the exact side effects but was shocked to find out that taking this could easily send you into psychogenic crisis.
The only reason that we are not aware of all the side effects of drugs like this is that because they are considered 'natural' they are not as widely tested as the usual medical drugs.
E.G. Kava Kava (nature's valium) has been taken off the market due to its dangerous side effects!!
Please don't misunderstand i do not wish to stop anyone from using anything, it is all personal choice, and i do not disagree with natural supplements, as i take them myself. i just feel that everyone should be aware that just because something is 'natural' it doesn't automatically make it safe, it just means it hasn't been very widely tested.
I know that reading this makes it sound obvious and i am sorry if anyone thinks i am being condsending, but it came as a huge shock when i found all this out in uni off one of my professors.

Of course there are possible reactions from herbs that have a pharmological effect and I agree that many need reminding that natural doesn't always mean safe. But I suspect that you are giving too much weight to the medico-legal hype that is clearly anti anything other than what the drug companies sell.
They are second only to the oil companies in anual profits and think they have no hidden agdenda or influence in global politics is innocent at best.
If you want to take the drug route - talk to a pharmacist.
The herbal route - a herbalist.
If you want to mix & match, then they're are few, if any that can advise and little evidence to support it.
What has been touted as a drug-herb interaction, may actually be that St John's Wort and other herbs are supporting the system of ridding the body of certain chemical toxins, but if the body is dependent on these to lower blood pressure or avoid pregnancy, then, yes in the medical model that would be regarded as an interaction.

Hmm..there has been a lot of bias reaction against St Johns Wort (stimulated by the drug companies) but from experience I would say that it actually creates the opposite to the above statement.
My advice listen to your body, listen to your soul, take your power back from the professionals. You can listen to all views including research on the internet but make up your own mind what is good for you. If I had listened to the professionals I would have spent £800 on root canal therapy and still had disease going into my bloodstream. I was lucky I found some good research on the net that assisted me to make the appropriate decison following this the dentist that carried out the chosen treatment confirmed that i had made the right choice.
Sadly drug companies and a lot of health professionals are in it for the money.

Sorry you took what i siaid the wromg way.
I didn't mean in any context that i disagree with natural supplements because i don't, but what i said about St. John's Wort id honestly fact.
I really was surprised to find that 'natural' products can cause this type of very serious side effects.
I suppose i thought, like most other people that anything natural was automatically safe.
All i was trying to say (thought it was said badly) was that if you are considering taking ANYTHING AT ALL then you need to research it first. although i still believe that 'natural' products MUST be better for you than medical, they still caryy side effects.........some quite serious.
I think that this is very frightening and needs to be looked into much more carefully than it is at present.
Sorry if i upset any of you, i was just so shocked to find out how dangerous some of this stuff can be i thought other poeple should be made aware of it too.

Bear in mind that lots of conventional medicine is based on "natural" products. As you say there is a lot about natural alternatives that we don't know, but there is also a lot which we are not told. Many large pharmaceutical companies are privy to this information, after investing huge amounts of money globally each year, but due to NHS/government and corporate expenditure, we are not often told the truth. Imagine if there was a cure for the common cold all the pharmaceutical companies would be out of business overnight.
