Sore throat

My teenage daughter has a sore throat on one side only. Her glands are up and her ear is painful.
I remember hearing that you could tell if a painful throat was viral or bacterial depending on whether it was unilateral or bilateral. Does anyone know which way round it is or is it just an old wives tale?

I haven't a clue Lesley, I just thought that once your glands and tonsils were affected it was viral. But hey I know nowt. I know exactly how your daughter feels I have one side that's giving me hell too. I think mines my tonsils though, its the first thing viruses attack when they get into me - my first weekness.
I think the only way to find out is to as a doc, but I do hope that she'll be well again soon.

I'm not sure which one it is either but I do have a great remedy which I think everyone who suffers in this way should know about. I have suffered from Septic throats (that's the yellowy pus type) swollen glands & tonsillitus since my teens. At least 2-3 times a year for as long as I remember. NOT ANY MORE THOUGH!
THE REMEDY:-
Tea tree oil - just 2 drops per 100ml of water. Gargle with it (spit out) - it doesn't taste too good but use it at the first sign of any soreness & then 3 times a day until your throat feels OK.
Bee Propalis Capsules - 1000mg. Take 2 capsules x 3 times daily for 5-7 days for a bad infection. 1capsule 3 times a day for 5-7 days if it's not too bad.
Someone (Bless her) told me about this as I was about to refill my second course of double strength antibiotics - 2 different lots both double strength.
I have used now for over 5 years at the 1st sign of any trouble & haven't had a septic throat since. Usually I was at the docs. for antibiotics 2-3 times a year - since using this remedy I haven't been back - that's 5 years antibiotic free!

Forgot to say - you can buy both of these reasonably at Holland & Barrett (NO - I do not work for them). Bee Propalis around £10-12 for 100 X 1000mg caps. Try the Thursdays Plantation Tea Tree oil - also available there.
Please bring this remedy to the attention of your friends who also suffer as I am totally amazed at how it has helped me - after 35 years of suffering sore throats - I'm now sore throat free!:D Everyone I have told about this it has REALLY helped them too.
A remedy that really works should be shared.

Ahhhhh ladies, you've got all the good advice ... but I'd like to add one of the oldest tips for keeping the mouth & throat cleasned ... gargle with salt water daily if possible, esp. if one is susceptible to infections.
GET BETTER SOONEST - nothing like a sore throat [:'(]

Thanks for your replies. I am an aromatherapist myself, so we've been doing the tea tree bit. She also has a very painful ear and have used olive oil with tea tree, chamomile and lavender, but she's not a particularly good patient anyway. We've got an appointment at the doc's this morning, but I'm sure it's viral and it will just take a little time.

Well I took Lauren to the doctor this morning and he told me that her throat was viral and her ear was infected (I still don't know how they can tell). He told me that the unilateral/bilateral throat pain is a myth and prescribed some ear drops for her (Betnsesol).
As soon as we got home I put two drops in her ear as directed, as I wanted them to get working quickly. Only afterwards did I think to read the literature in the box. It said that they were corticosteroid drops and should not be used for infections - alarm bells!!!
Now doctors don't take too kindly to being questioned, so I firstly called my friend who is a pharmacist who told me that these drops wouldn't hurt her, but wouldn't help her infection, but there were similar drops with antibiotic in them and that I should phone the doc.
So I called the surgery, the receptionist was a bit 'off' at first, but after she had spoken to the doctor said I was right to call as he had made a mistake (apparently pressed the wrong button on the computer!) and we should have the drops with the anti-biotic (neomycin) in. So then I had to go back to the docs, the chemist, etc.
I have put two drops in Lauren's ear, but am still concerned as the literature says that these drops should not be used if viral or fungal infections are present (how do they know without doing a swab?). Her ear is sore, itchy and inflamed and it says that these drops should not be applied to open wounds or damaged skin as the antibiotic component can cause irreversible partial or total deafness if used on open wounds or damaged skin. I have decided that I will use these drops on Lauren for no more than a day or so, but it really is worrying.
Incidentally, Linda, I did by some Bee Propolis, but must point out the warning on the bottle: - 'Not recommended for asthma or allergy sufferers as it can cause severe allergic reactions'. I don't know whether this is every allergy, but it is not specific, so one has to assume so.
Everyone in my family has reacted to one thing or another over the years, so have I just wasted £9.99?
Well, I'm now more confused than I was this morning, but thanks again for your help.

Hi Lesley
It doesn't say that on mine - it says:-
'Ingredients - Bee Propalis Powder, Pollen, Capsule Shell (gelatine) - Do not take if allergic to above ingredients'
The consumption of Bee Propalis dates back to the ancient Egyptians. Bee Propalis is collected from Trees & plants and serves as a key structure of the bee hive and it's immune system. Bee Propalis contains resin, wax and bioflavins.
Free from gluten, wheat, yeast, corn soya, starch, sugar, lactose, salt, preservatives, artificial colourings & flavourings.
Ours is Holland & Barretts own make.
Carl suffers usually horrendously from asthma and he also has bad allergies (from living in Mississippi - the allergy capital of the USA).
He has found great benefit from bee propalis (if ever there were a likelihood of a reaction I think he would be 1st to have it LOL)
He has also cut down drastically on his inhalers recently as he found if he used bee pollen (which we get at health shows) just a pinch morning & night then he doesn't need them as this seems to protect him from the asthma. He hoping by using bee pollen he's going to get to a stage soon when he doesn't take any - it certainly is appearing to help him tremendously.
I would have thought that if you are OK with honey then you should be OK with Bee Propalis - as there is bound to be some in the honey - especially the more expensive ones which are locally produced. The reason they are probably more good for you is because they are not as refined as the mass produced - the goodness is in the pollen & the Propalis which locally produced unrefined ones will have in abundance.
Just my humble opinion - All I can say is that it has been a miracle cure for me & many, many people I have given the remedy to - It also works on all ear, nose & throat infections.
I've never heard of any reactions to it & you would not believe how many people I have given the info to. --- In Aura Photos we can tell if someone has an active throat chakra - which often (in 40% of cases) means they have sore throats often. I usually tell about 20% of the people who come to have their auras read about Bee Propalis. The number who come back to thank me at a later show is very high.
Blessings, love, Light & Laughter

Thanks again for that Linda. I have been mentioning it to various friends who have had throat problems etc. One of them went to a local health food shop yesterday to buy some and was asked if she suffered from asthma, before she bought them, so I would definitely advise caution.
Incidentally the mine are made by Health Aid.
