"Sleep Apnoea"

Hi all:D
I've recently been in hospital and while under anesthetic (sp?) I had "sleep apnoea". Hardly know anything about it and all the searches I do are well, to technical for me:eek:.
Any help off you lovely people here would be greatly appreciated (any doctor's in the house?:)
Many thanks in advance

Hiya Honey
Right now dont get too worried will you and are they following it up...
there are essentially two different types of sleep apnoea, central and obstructive
central is where the brain signals get confused and you forget to breath
obstructive is where the muscle tone in the neck is weak and causes a collapsing effect which obstructs breathing, typically woken up by a large snort etc (this is the most common type)
You can get a mixture of the two.
Have they mentioned doing a home sleep study on you???

Hi Crystallove,
My husband has chronic sleep apnoea and has had it for past 8 years or so. He had the choice of surgery to his palate to tighten the area to stop the vibration but our dentist advised against it unless he could have the op in a hospital that specialised in that sort of surgery as it was very painful and didn't guarantee success!
He went into a sleep clinic for tests and they found he was cutting out breathing for up to 2 minutes before 'waking' enough to start breathing!!! He ended up with a CPAP machine which he has to have every night. It consists of a small machine that sits at the side of the bed and pumps continuous air into his nasal passages via a plastic clear mask that fits over his face, therefore preventing him from snoring and his throat tissue collapsing across his airway. Not the sexiest pieces of equipment admittedly, but it stops his snoring and prevents him from having a stroke or heart attack!!
Remember this was a few years ago that he was diagnosed and surgery has probably come along in leaps and bounds since then. He has to take the machine in to be checked out and re-calibrated if his weight has changed, once a year.
I must admit he hated it at first, made him feel very claustrophobic , but now, considering the alternatives, he wouldn't be without it.
Hope this helps with your questions!

Hi TigerBee
When I came round from the anesthetic in the recovery room I felt very weak[&:] (all there) just too much like hard work trying to talk. I was also put on oxygen.
I clearly heard the lady nurse who was in theatre with me, telling the nurse who came from the ward to get me, "her breathing is very shallow, keep the oxygen on. She also had sleep apnoea but I'm not sure what she's like at home" I wanted to respond at this point but couldn't.
As soon as I felt better (enough to talk) I made enquiries with a nurse on the ward.
She came back and said "yes, you heard right" so I asked her for an explaination. She went on to say "that you stop breathing, but then start again"
and it's nothing to worry about, that was the end.
So T, they won't be following it up and there will be no sleep study either?
Should I start worrying now[&:]?
I'm just trying not to think about it (especially just before going to bed) lol

Hi Reikiangel
All sounds a bit scary[&:] but thankyou for enlightening me.
If I hadn't heard the nurses talking, and didn't make enquiries, I'd be none the wiser (even though it was all in my notes)
Should I talk to my G.P about this?
Any help would be welcomed:D
Many thanks in advance

Dear Crystallove,
Sorry if I scared you, that wasn't my intention!!. Do not worry. Has anyone complained about you snoring in the past?. Do you wake up in the morning feeling really tired and nod off to sleep during the day in inapprpriate places?. Are you over-weight and have high blood pressure?. These are all indicators of chronic sleep apeneoa I made my husband go to the doctor's after watching a documentary on the TV re snoring. There was a help-line address at the end of it and I sent off for their fact sheet. When it came my husband had 5 out of the 6 indicators (and any ONE was a problem!). The only thing he didn't have was high blood pressure. Our GP asked if she could photocopy the fact sheet because she was sure she would have more pt's coming in after seeing the documentary and she wanted to be able to have the correct info for them. She referred my husband to the sleep clinic and the rest is history!
So, pease do not worry. If you want your mind put at rest then have a chat with your GP by all means.
Have a good night's sleep!

I don't know if it's the same op, but I know that they can use a 'hot wire', now to shrink the soft pallate. [:o]
There's also a spray that you can get from an independent health food shop that may help. I think it contains MSM, or MSM is another thing to look into. [sm=scratchchin.gif]
Alcohol & smoking is likely to exacerbate the problem. [sm=banghead.gif]
Theoretically - TCM or 5-Element acupuncture may help, as may osteopathy & cranial osteopathy.
Good luck - Andrew. ;)

Hiya Jackie
firstly TRY not to worry....
the snoring thing may not always happen as it may be the central apnoea not the obstructive (snoring one). First things first, in order to stop worrying you need to arm yourself with the facts go speak with the doctor and tell him. It could be that this was just a reaction to the medicine at the time.....but if it is apnoea then it needs to be addressed.
by the way CPAP machines for home use are not scary just take a bit of adjusting too but that may not even be appropriate for you so dont go there yet!!!!!
Mart had a home sleep study and you just get a machine to bring home, attach various bits (all painless) and it logs any incidences - you take it back to the hospital the next day and they look at the data...
Hope that helps

Hi Reikiangel
In answer to your questions: I have been known to have the odd snore during pregnancy only, those days are over now;)
Yes I wake up some morning's feeling tired, but I've never fallen asleep during the day (ever) I WISH!!!!!! lol.
Not overweight anymore:Dmaybe a few flabby bits but hey I've had 6 kids.
Blood pressure is ok (if anything when there is a change in my blood pressure it's always low).
Will be going to G.P's on thursday think I might just mention it.

Ok I will admit now, I know it's bad but it's easier said than done. I will give it some thought though.
Do you offer the above mentioned treatments at your place of work?
Thanks

Yes it was apnea (sp?) and I'm going to have a little word with my G.P on thursday.
I was also under anesthetic when it happened (maybe that had something to do with it?) as we all know how relaxed you go under it, maybe I just got so relaxed
that I did actually forget to breath:D lol don't forget I am blonde[sm=rollaugh.gif]

Hiya,
I am resurecting, and hijacking this thread, (hope you dont mind Jackie;)) because I am to lazy (and tired) to start a new one, and because I suspect Martin is suffering with it:eek:
I have read all the info posted but I still have a few questions, but you will have to forgive all my typos, and if it all comes out confused (I have been awake most of the night listening to Martin breathing, or not breathing)
The questions are really for Tigerbee, and Reikiangel as they have experience of this (but welcome any input from anyone else who has suffered)
Did the men in question experience severe headaches?
Martin went to the Drs about these headaches and he was put on Pizotifen tablets.
Did your men stop breathing while NOT snoring?
Tigerbee did you go private to get the home study gear?
Will wait for replies, but in the mean time, I'm off to get some shuteye;)

Sorry Jackie, only spotted this when the THread popped up again. Yes we have a hypnotherapist at the Centre and a couple of traditional acupuncturists.
There are other options, but think they'd be your best bet, if you've not sorted it already.
Andrew.
