bicarb and lemon juice for teeth
Hi,
did anyone see Richard and Judy the other night, they were doing a thing on teeth whitening and bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice seemed to work well as a whitener. is this safe and does it work. my teeth are not super strong so i don't want to use something that might be too harsh but would like to remove some ciggarette staining.
Thanks

Hi Daisy
I'm not sure what the effect on your teeth would be. However, I use loads of bicarbonate of soda for various cleaning jobs and find it excellent. It cleans and gets rid of the smell in flasks and tubs that have had curry etc. stored in them. It is also the main ingredient in those lovely Bath Bombs and many other products we use on our skin. Does anyone remember when we had tins of toothpaste (showing my age again). I wonder is that had a bicarb base.
If I manage to find out anything I will let you know
Love and best wishes

I always thought that too much fruit juice isn't good for the teeth as the acid wears away the enamel and I would imagine that pure lemon juice would be particularly bad.
I have also read that even the whitening toothpastes, which I believe are bicarbonate based rub away the enamel. I have very soft teeth and have been advised by my dentist not to use them.
I would check with dentist first and use with caution.

bicarb is well known for whitening all sorts of things......however be very careful with lemon as it can damage the enamel on the teeth......which is also the reason you should never give pure juices to a child.....

I'm no expert, but echoing what the others have said, lemon IS very acidic. For that reason, I wouldn't do it myself.
If a lemon and bicarb combo work well on cleaning stains off teeth, I wonder what else they can be used for as a team?
Bicarb is great for all sorts of things. Unwanted odours in shoes or fridge, if left there. Facial wash. Allsorts.
