why do we age?

Is it possible to stop the ageing process by living sainly, eating the right stuff and avoid stress?
There are of course many theories about this subject and bestseller's books. Some say that old age is a sickness that can be cured by abovementioned lifestyle, others say that old age is unavoidable by yearlong wear of the body.
What is it then? Does the maintenance fail so that more and more faults come to light til a limit is reached? Your views are welcome.

the simple answer is... No! You can slow down the process of physical decay (ageing) but you cannot stop it. It has always been like this for any living organism. Plants, animals, humans we all age; in fact ever objects age. Space ages.... everything does.
Sorry to disappoint you here but remember that you are still young anyhow.
Love and peace.

Hi Marijke:)
I agree with the previous post, I also believe illness and growing old is part of the learning process. Illness makes or break us and prehaps needing to make changes to life style to improve quality of life is part of it. I have as I have got older and suffered many of the illnesses that result through stress come to the conclusion that changing lifestyle though I may not be as well off is much better than before I enjoy life and hope to grow older disgracefully.

to get to the biology aspect - the minute we are born we begin to die (awful thought but true) the cells in our brain die and are not renewed. fortunately we have billions and billions of the things. All our cells are primed to multiply (except the brain cells) our dna strand releases a tiny bit from the bottom which goes on to make a new cell. (eg skin, blood etc). Eventually the dna strand uses up its set amount of pieces and cells are no longer reproduced, hence the gradual decay of our organs etc. Just like a car, gradually through wear and tear it is just not driveable anymore and we have to vacate it.
I wish we could stop it but at the moment its not possible, however our dna strands must be getting longer because people are living a lot longer. 100 years ago people were old at 60, 200/300 years ago people were old at 40/50 and if you lived past 40 1000 years ago you were thought as being aged. The normal lifespan when I was a child was 60/70 then people gradually began to live until 80, now people can live until 90 even 100. I wonder what it will be in another 20/30 years we might make it past 100. It's all down to better living conditions and better medical care.
Mind you I think we'd better start living longer because there aren't as many of us humans at the younger end of the evolutionary ladder.
