Surely not all illnesses are due to emotions?
Just recently I've noticed that many physical ailments ie fibromyalgia, heart arrythmias etc are claimed by some past sufferers, to be caused by lack of self esteem or unhappiness and cured by solving these aspects of their lives.
Unfortunately this is not always the case and makes some sufferers feel as though they are hypochondriacs as its all in their mind, when actually its caused by some sort of electrical defect in the heart or an imbalance.
Stress can make conditions worse and controlling this is beneficial, but sometimes these conditions get worse for no apparent reason, when we are actually very happy, and quite like ourselves. I also know that some therapies are very effective in relieving symptoms, but cant always cure and medical intervention may be necessary
I would be interested to hear success stories in detail as to which therapies are most successful. EFT etc. and also if anyone agrees with me -
It not all in the mind.

Hi Jan, It is thought that around 80% of illness is psychosomatic (caused or aggravated by mental conflict, stress etc). Have you read the book by Louise Hay "You can heal your life" - worth a read.
All illness is caused by an imbalance of either mind, body or soul. Of course there are instances of disease being caused in the body due to outside influences, our diet, the environment we live in, chemicals in our food and toiletries, all these have an affect in the body.
You mention the word imbalance, the imbalance stems from somewhere, the body responds to our thoughts, how we feel about ourselves, whether we're blocking out love, all sorts of emotional responses, this in turn affects the cells in our bodies, for example, if you think you're unworthy, the cells in your body will begin to change to accomodate the feelings you have about yourself. We do not get sick for no reason, sometimes the cause of the sickness requires us to look deeply to pinpoint the root cause, and a lot of the time the root cause will be emotional, not always, but a lot of the time.
Just off to class, will log on later.

Answers:
Hi Rosie, I didn't get any sense that Louise Hay assigns any guilt or apparent guilt in her book. She has written the book after many years as a practising therapist and healer, those are her findings.
When I read her book I felt empowered, as I began to realise that dis-ease isn't something that is done to us, we aren't victims, and it's in the emotional, mental and spiritual blockages that we have, that lead to dis-ease. Where is the guilt in this? If anything she is giving us answers to "Why do we get sick in the first place"? We are spiritual beings having a stay on the Earth plane, our soul houses the body, not the other way round, so all dis-ease first begins in our energy bodies surrounding our human bodies, the last place where dis-ease shows is in the physical body. This suggests that the root cause of dis-ease is not in the physical body at all, but is first seen on the aura which houses the etheric energy body, emotional energy body, the mental energy body and the soul energy body.
In otherwords we can place the words in the following order:
Soul
Etheric
Mind
Emotions
Body
So, the route of the soul message is first to the mind, then emotions, then the body.
The soul communicates with the personality (what we think of as 'us') through the etheric. It is etheric consciousness that directs the soul message first to our mind, then the emotions, then the body. More often than not, our mind blocks the signal because of its conditioning. Similarlly, it can surpress our emotional response. If this happens, the soul message is conveyed to the body where a physical condition or response is generated. This is how many of our aches and pains, accidents and incidents are actually clues to an earlier soul message, which the mind and emotions have blocked, missed or suppressed.
i also find it a little dangerous to claim that one cured oneself of cancer with no treatment at all but if you dont manage it yourself, you couldnt have been doing it right. i am sure many people do get rid of cancers by positive thought or whatever, but i still find ms hay's claims dangerous.
Why is it dangerous to claim that you have cured yourself of cancer with no treatment? It is happening more and more nowadays.
I think we need to realise that one thing is curing yourself of cancer, but what about those that die from it? I don't think it has anything to do with not doing it right, perhaps the soul chose to leave the earth plane and not recover from the dis-ease. We are now going into the realms of soul agreements and contracts, but at some level, that particular soul chose to depart and this is a decision taken at soul level, not at the personality level.

clearly, we are on different levels of thinking and i can say that, with absolutely no disrespect. your post was very good and i liked it. however, many people do not think in this way, i'm talking general public.
so, to quote from louise hay's book :
"When cancer or any other illness returns, I do not believe it is because the doctor did not *get it all out*, but rather the patient has made no mental changes and so just recreates the same illness."
"Now when a client comes to me, no matter how dire their predicament seems to be, I KNOW if they are WILLING to do the mental work of releasing and forgiving, almost anything can be healed. The word "incurable", which is so frightening to so many people, really only means that the particular condition cannot be cured by *outer* methods and that we must GO WITHIN to effect the healing. The condition came from nothing and will go back to nothing."
i think these ideas are dangerous because she is encouraging us to forego orthodox treatment in order to cure the condition ourselves. and, if we dont cure it and then die, well... we just werent willing to put in the mental work.
as i said before, i think positive thought goes a long way but as a trained therapist, i also know i can work alongside alopathic medicine and i certainly dont relish the idea of people rejecting it.
as it happens i use the book as a point of reference for emotional problems that may be causing physical symptoms, but i am not at all liking the affirmations.
Answers:
Hi Rosie, Yes the general public don't think in this way and as therapists we are leading the way so to speak, and bringing ourselves into harmony and balance requires that we look at all aspects of the Self, something that we really haven't been doing, and the evidence is all around us in society.
Sadly Rosie, a lot of the conditions that are termed incurable by the medical profession are indeed cases where the reason for the dis-ease has its root on either the spiritual, mental or emotional level. This is not the speciality of the medical profession, who work much more on the physical level, and the aim is not to use complementary as an alternative, but rather to complement any orthodox treatment, at the same time bringing an awareness to the medical profession of treating the whole person. The ideal scenario is working as a team, catering not only for the physical, but also for the mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of the person.
The types of complementary therapies we are practising will at some point in our future be standard in all hospitals, surgeries, and we'll wonder how we did things before. Fasten those seatbelts, I have a feeling we're going to be ever so busy!
We ought to never suggest a person discontinues their medical treatments, however, at times the person knows deep inside that their condition will be cured using complementary treatments, and only the individual can speak for him or herself, for they have their own agenda that we know nothing about. I believe this is what occured with Louise Hay, she just knew that there were other factors at play and that her cancer was not going to be cured by conventional medicine. Conventional medicine cannot operate on your mental state, your emotional state, or your Spirit. There is a limit to what it can do, and again the evidence is all around us.
Can I ask why you don't like the affirmations? I find them very helpful if there is a pattern I'm working with, if I catch myself thinking the negative thought, I replace it with the positive affirmation, they are like little reminders to myself to be kind to myself and gentle with myself.

Rosie you have really 'hit the nail on the head'. I've had so many strong determined people succumb to cancer, a dear young relative age 23, 2 friends who died from cancer, bowel cancer age 34 and breast cancer age 44, I know it annoyed them when people said others had 'beaten cancer' through various alternatives or 'determination. They were all from good, happy backgrounds, had lovely husbands and children, everything to live for like the lovely karen Keating. Cancer is a bit of a lottery, some are lucky others aren't.
I've been reading the Louise Hay book and although I can see the benefits of positive thinking can be helpful I think the illnesses section and the possible cause is quite funny at times.
If you look up tapeworm she says the possible cause is "strong belief in being a victim and unclean. Helpless to the seeming attitude of others" or perhaps it could be because you were unlucky enough to eat some undercooked meat!!
She also says that " accident is no accident, like everything in life we create them" phew!!
I think some of this is harmful and could make troubled people worse, thinking it all their own fault they are suffering.

I use Louise Hay's book "Heal Your Body" primarily as a reference book. But I don't feel it is the be-all/end all to alleviating one's disease (dis-ease).
A head cold could be related to grief or releasing and letting go of suppressed emotions. Or it could simply mean your body is tired from stress and lack of sleep.

Hi Heartsong, Your last point explains wonderfully what I have been speaking about.
The cold was as a result of something else going on, the cold didn't just appear there. Grief brings up many, many emotions, these emotions in turn weaken the immune system, and a cold is the result. The same as stress, and lack of sleep, something has occured, and that something has given you a condition, in your example a cold. If I am stressed I get a cold sore, but I can trace the cold sore if you see what I mean. I always ask myself the question "What has brought on this condition, or this cold sore, or this cold", and I am given the answer. Some conditions are easy to trace, like my cold sore example, when I'm stressed. Other conditions take more time to work through the layers of blockages that have accumulated over time. There is no blame in any of this, as a therapist, my aim is towards finding the root cause, if you can pinpoint the root cause, the dis-ease, discomfort goes away. You have to use discernment here, for some people may not be ready to hear certain things. We're all at different stages in our journey, and it is a good idea to perhaps introduce the concept, for example you may ask someone whether they are holding onto any resentment or unforgiveness, one lady I asked a similar question to was quite happy to tell me she was ok about this and that, but was tearful at the same time. We have to be very sensitive to people's needs, and where they are on their path, and ultimately they have free will to either take on board what we say to them, or not but gently, gently is the key.
Suffice to say that all conditions either have their root at a spiritual, mental, and emotional level. As therapists we need to take everything into consideration, and I use the books for reference also. Interestingly enough I use Louise Hay's book on myself a lot, and I have to say that I have yet to find her to be inaccurate, certainly with the conditions that I've experienced personally, her findings are spot on, this is only obvious to me as I pinpoint the root cause, whether it be a mental issue, an emotional issue, or spiritual issue.
I am beginning to believe more and more that a lot of conditions we experience are as a result of our beliefs, or incorrect thinking, sometimes known as the sponsoring thought. This sponsoring thought is generally formed by what we see around us, we begin to form opinions and beliefs coupled with conditioning from our parents, then a little bit more conditioning from society in general, so it can take a while to get to the actual sponsoring thought, in other words the root cause.
The enormity of the subject overwhelms me at times, always more questions and more to learn, I think as therapists we're never going to stop, always learning, and experiencing more.

The medical term for the connection between the mind, the nervous system and the immune system is called Psychoneuroimmunology

In her book Molecules Of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine
Candace Pert makes the link:
Why do we feel the way we feel? How do our thoughts and emotions affect our health? Are our bodies and minds distinct from each other or do they function together as parts of an interconnected system?
In her groundbreaking book Molecules of Emotion, Candace Pert provides startling and decisive answers to these and other challenging questions that scientists and philosophers have pondered for centuries.
Her pioneering research on how the chemicals inside our bodies form a dynamic information network, linking mind and body, is not only provocative, it is revolutionary. By establishing the biomolecular basis for our emotions and explaining these new scientific developments in a clear and accessible way, Pert empowers us to understand ourselves, our feelings, and the connection between our minds and our bodies -- body-minds -- in ways we could never possibly have imagined before.
