broken tooth ! dentist fears....!
Ok I admit it I’ve not been the dentist for more than 10 years – and that niggling pain I have been trying to ignore for the last three months has developed into a part broken molar – I can taste metal and can’t stop probing it with my tongue BUT I’m really really afraid of the dentist ! – I have called a dentist and booked an appointment I know I need to have to seen to, and I’m already starting to shake and want to cancel.
Sorry for being such a lamer BUT I just wanted to tell someone! My childhood dentist was more a butcher and the thought of having to see a dentist is filling (no pun) me with dread.
What can I expect? Will they drill out my old filling and replace? Will I need root surgery? Can they just patch up a small part?
Regards

You will be fine. If I can do it so can you. I feel so much better now. I now wonder why I got myself in to such a state before going.
I will be thinking of you at 3.00.

I'm sure the reality of the dentist will not be anywhere near as bad as what you're probably imaginng and I hope it goes well tomorrow. Have you ever thought of trying to overcome this fear? I used to be "multi-phobic" about almost everything but have used hypnotherapy and EFT to overcome them. Hypnosis is good, but I absolutely LOVE EFT and it works so quickly! Since first experiencing it (from Jonathan here on HP) I have also trained myself. You'll find that lots of EFT practitioners will work with you over the phone (Jonathan, myself and other practitioners on here included) and it may be that you only need one session. For more info have a look at www.emofree.com or on the Mind Therapies forum on here. I'm sure you would be a lot happier without this fear hanging over you.
Take care Mike.

I had to have a biopsy in my mouth a couple of years ago. I was very anxious leading up to the appointment and in the end couldn't go through with it because I was panicking so much.
I made another appointment to have it done under sedation. However, in the end I went through with it all pretty easily without the sedative.
The big difference for me was the dentist - the first one wasn't in the slightest understanding of me being nervous - it was just a routine procedure to him and I was wasting his time.
The second dentist was very understanding - explained everything that would happen before and made me feel in control of what was going on.
I think if you have a dentist that understands your fears and how to make you feel more comfortable, it will all end up being much easier than you expect. Make sure the dentist explains what will happen so nothing is a suprise during the appointment.

I also had a fear of dentists up until yesterday, I went to one who is female and explained that I have had a very bad experience with dentists in the past and she was really understanding. Unfortunatly my teeth need loads doing to them (my love of sweet things and brittle teeth lol) and I said that money is a bit of an issue at the moment and I couldn't afford half of what it will all cost - so she has sent of for funding from the NHS so I should hear from her in a week or so and then I will be seeing lots of her after that.
I wish you all the luck for today and will be thinking of you and sending reiki to you at 3.00. Once you step through the door you will feel different.

Well first thanks for the support and good wishes and yes I did go ! oh my god I can tell you I was having a panic attack - a few deep breaths and I manged to get into the surgery ! explained to the nurse / dentist that I was very nervous etc (he could probably tell by my shaking legs and endless rambling, why did I talk about all sorts of unrelated stuff!!) - He was brill a really nice guy put me at easy and fix my broken tooth - he took some photo's to show me what needed doing - basically I need to have five fillings (including the broken tooth) - So I'm all booked in for my next appointment to start the required treatment, still feel slightly worried / scared etc BUT a hugh improvment seeing as I have not been for 10-15 years! the attitude and approach and technology has vastly improved - he really cared ! and the dental nurse was good too - A big thanks again to everyone on here who wished me well - without you I would not have gone.......
Best Wishes - Michael

Hi Mikeo,
I too have had fear of dentists going back to when I was a child....school dentists....aargh!!Up until a few weeks ago I hadn`t been for quite a while.I wish I had gone before... but too late to worry about that now! I have had to have 2 extractions, a root canal and some other fillings done, still haven`t finished. What I would like to say is I`m not scared anymore... so much has changed...there isn`t that awful smell anymore, my dentist is brilliant, very calm and understanding, puts me at ease. I close my eyes so I can`t see the instruments,,,another fear. Honestly, I am not just saying this to make you feel better, it`s the truth, so don`t worry, you`ll be fine and when its done you`ll be so pleased you finally went.
Best wishes,
