Flouride in our water?
Hello All...
Just got back from 4 months in South America and while there, was attempting to keep up with the news via the Guardian website... there was a disturbing (and surprisingly small) article about how a bill has been (quietly) passed to allow the government to dump toxic waste (namely flouride) in the water supply throughout England...
Haven't managed to find much more information about this, and was wondering what i've missed i.e. media, demonstrations, petitions.. surely this can't be happening!!!

Maya they've been dumping the stuff in for years, we've had flouride in our water for ages along with heaven knows what else. You can tell sometimes it tastes chemically. I don't drink tap water if I can possibly help it, if I have to I filter it.
Terrible isn't it, we were duped, told that the flouride would do our teeth good but of course since then it has been shown that this is completely unnecessary.

Thanks Marnie,
Though apparantly only 10% of the UK water supply is already flouridated e.g. West Cumbria, the West Midlands and the North East. The House of Commons only voted on it last September 8th as far as I can see...

Although there's no update since the vote there unfortunately... I'm very surprised there isn't more said in general about this madness!

Hi Maya
I bet there are so many things that go through quietly that we are unaware of.
I do not drink water straight from the tap always use filtered water. Scary stuff I do not use chemical cleaners and avoid chemicals in my beauty products too.
On the radio about the latest ad campaign to add more fluoride to our drinking water in the aim to save your children’s teeth from rotting. Scaring you and your children with a picture of a five-year-old child with rotten teeth, in the hope that you will drink more tap water.
Some will say ignore it, it’s wrong to force “mass medication” onto the population – especially as it’s so contentious.
Fact: A number of studies and scientific reports have linked fluoride consumption to an increased risk in osteoporosis and cancer. It can kill red blood cells, lead to premature aging and lower IQ levels.
Fact: The review backed by the British Dental Association (which receives up to £300,000 a year from manufacturers to endorse their fluoride products) claimed that the size of any estimated benefit of fluoridation for strengthening children’s teeth was 15% at best.
What can you do?
1. Ignore the campaign.
2. Use non-fluoride toothpaste. For example: Boots non-fluoride, Welda and AloeDent.
3. Get a filter fitted onto your main taps. Contact The Pure H2O Company on 01784 221188 or http://www.purewater.co.uk
4. Buy a really good water filter or alternatively drink only bottled water.
5. If you’re worried about the levels of fluoride in the water in your area, contact the National Pure Water Association at http://www.npwa.freeserve.co.uk. This website will help you understand more about the harmful effects of fluoridating water and will give you advice on the best filter to suit your household needs.

Thanks for the (ahem..) 2 replies folks, but I have to say I am quite surprised and saddened by what seems to me to be complacency and disinterest over such an important issue that is going to effect millions of people in the UK! I think it would be very short-sighted to think that having a water filter will render you unaffected in one way or another by toxic waste going into our water supply..
Until this move, water companies have chosen, through fear of lawsuits of knowing the dangers of Flouride, to keep it out of the water supply, despite government pressures. This move will not give them the choice anymore. It is considered a way of cutting down tooth decay within deprived areas. Though when challenged, dentistry cannot cite ONE study which they have ever conducted comparing the overall health of children afflicted with dental fluorosis to those without. And quietly it seems we have handed over our rights to freedom of choice, and decided, through misinformed propogranda or general disinterest in the issue, that the government can self-medicate the entire country for the sake of a few, who for whatever reason, don't brush their teeth!
Flouride has many levels of toxicity. It causes corrosion in the intestines (by forming hydrofluoric acid in the stomach), thyroid disease/damage (caused by the inhibition of hormone conversion in the peripheral tissue and stops the absorption of Iodine in the system), transportation and de-iodination effects. It is also known to cause many problems ranging in anything from depression, hypersalivation, vomiting, weak muscles, anaemia, mottled teeth, diarrhea to kidney failure, brittle bones, Alzheimers Disease, aorta calcification, asthma, birth defects, autism, chronic fatigue syndrome, decrease in testosterone, Down Syndrome, IBS, Parkinson's Disease, Schizophrenia and cancer.. Severe doxicity can lead to respiritory paralysis or even multi-organ failure and premature death!
Flouride is one of our most toxic chemicals. It was developed during the cold war, as a key ingredient in the production of uranium and plutonium for atomic bombs. The first lawsuits by workers in the American A-bomb project were not for radiation sickness, in fact, but for fluoride damage. In order to save itself from hefty legal payouts, the government needed some human subjects so it could ˜prove" that fluoride was not damaging to health. It also needed to get rid of massive stocks of the chemical at the end of the cold war. The rest, as they say, is histoire. Fluoride is now added to most water supplies in the Western world, but as yet only 10% of the UK has its water flouridated.
Is it ˜safe?"(yet alone 'good for teeth and bones') Well, make up your own mind..
Most of the 'scientific proof' that it is comes from are from scientists employed by the atomic bomb project, who were instructed to find evidence that could be used by their employers in fluoride injury cases. Most of the evidence that it isn't, meanwhile, is provided by independent scientists - like Dr Phyllis Mullenix, former head of toxicology at Forsyth Dental Center in Boston, who showed that fluoride is a central nervous system toxin. She also suggested
that it could adversely affect human brain function even at low doses. More recent studies from China show a correlation between fluoride exposure and reduced IQ in children.
Recently Belgium became the first EU country to ban flouride in tablets, drops, chewing gum and salt. While in India, where 66 million people suffer from fluorosis (6 million of which are children) the health ministry warns the people to stay away from flouride toothpaste and black tea... a step in the right direction. UNICEF has now identified 25 countries wher fluorosis is endemic.
Sorry, but complacency never won any rights... am I alone out here??!!
I urge you all to clarify all what I have written by checking out the well-informed website:

I too an horrified by the new television advert trying to convince us to accept fluoridation (sp?), you know the one with the lad with rotted teeth who didn't live in an area where water has fluoride added, then the pearly whites of a child who lives in a fluoridated area...the lad with rotted teeth might have eaten a load of sweets, never brushed his teeth and had a history of poor teeth in the family!
Thanks for the reminder and links
