Weight loss

Hey. This is my first post!
I have recently been looking into slimming aids, I am not sure if they really work or if they are good for you? I understand you have to have a calorie controlled diet, with regular exercise whilst taking slimming pills, but I am just wondering if anybody knows if they work? Any advantages or disadvantages would be great!
Thanks.

Hi Sayz and warm welcome to HP[sm=wave.gif]
IMHO, you'd be better off going to a slimming club, where you will get plenty of encouragement and support for your weightloss. Personally I would recommend Slimming World as it worked for me - sensible diet with loads to eat (Yes, it's TRUE, if you follow the diet as they tell you to, and it's not just things like lettuce leaves:D), and I was relieved they didn't blab about my weight at the weigh-ins. It was kept confidential. Phew. :DThe camaraderie at the meetings was great - I looked forward to them. Any lapse in weightloss was given support, which really helped me.
The only worry I had was going to my very first meeting, so I phoned the consultant beforehand and she was brilliant and allayed my worries about it all.ThenI 'bit the bullet' and went, by myself as well, and it was absolutely fine.
I ended up losing 3 stones 1lb in 9 months.:)
Good luck with whatever you decide to do though, and I'll be interested to know how you get on with your weightloss. I've been there and know what it's like.;)
Best wishes

The issue for any weight loss plan is whether the weight will stay off permanently. People who create things like the diet pill know you'll be back for more. I'm sure you've heard of "yoyo" dieting. Not only does it not get longterm results but it is also bad for your health to keep gaining and losing weight.
I advise clients to look at the reasons why they crave the food they need or can't stop eating food when a person of a normal weight would have stopped. Use something like EFT to address the underlying issues.
Good luck!

By slimming aids I guess you mean pills, tablets and supplements etc.
Slimming pills are effective but cannot be relied upon unless you work with them. Any sensible diet (apart form Atkins) and a regular exercise will reduce your weight. The first intial step are the hardest.
Rather than start with the tablet route - find a dietthat you are comfortable with, then after time introduce a diet supplement if need be. Seriously, almost any diet!!
Be carefull of the diet pill industry it is fraut with products that either do not contain any fat reducing or apptite suppressing agent.
With almost all diet pills there are side effects (or treatment effects as the industry likes to call them now) some can be minor such as unusual bowel movements and some can be very nasty indeed. Choose with care and either have them GP prescribed (if you qualify) or choose something that is completely herbal that does not contain any chemical (steer clear of anything Ephedra based)
To be on the safe side - if you have any medical condition at all - dont take tablets. If you are on any other medication dont take tablets.
The biggest obstacle most people suffer in the battle to be slimmer is the "starting tomorrow attitude"
Unless there is an underlying medical condition that is beyond your control there is absolutely no reason why a human being cannot be the weight that is considered healthy.

Hi Sayz,
I've had ongoing problems with food for 4 years, swinging from extremely underweight to 3st overweight within that time. Being very well aware of the spiritual significance of 'weight issues' just didn't seem to make anydifference because I could only sustain a healthy eating pattern for a few weeks (or a month at the most) at a time.
In April this year I was introduced to a wonderful approach that puts most counselling/psychotherapy to shame! There's no real 'magic formula' so to speak, but it isn't just an eating plan or a bunch of tenchniques-trust me, I'd tried everything! Rather, it teaches you to harness your own mind and you feel able to fully commit to the decision to lose weight. (If you're anything like me, I'd always have a niggling doubt in the back of my mind that somehow life was more varied and exciting when I could binge on chocolate and cakes[:-]) Anyway, it explains what happens in your brain when you have a craving, and how to correct this through mindfulness, relaxation, visualisation and a technique called 'motivational interviewing'.
As I mentioned, I felt like I'd tried every approach under the sun, and couldn't understand why sometimes I overate even when I wasn't hungry and didn't want to- there just didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to my thought patterns and thinking about it just made it worse. As I read the book by the pioneers of this counselling technique, everything started to fall into place and gradually I began to really understand what was going on in my thought processes and why I was reacting in the way I did.Three months on and I've lost 1.5 stone and the other knock-on benefits it's had on my life have been amazing! I finally feel free of a huge amount of worry and guilt and my self esteem and moods in general are so much higher.
To cut a long post short, I would echo Moonfairy's sentiments and advise against using slimming pills. I think it's helpful to look at the reasons why you overeat and then seek support from people rather than chemicals. A big part of addcitions (including overeating) is your needs as a human being not being met. When you're not getting fulfilment from realtionships, careers and other areas of your life such as feeling valued for the wonderful person you are, you seek highs and new experiences through other, less healthy means and that's usually where addiction starts and your control over your life grinds to a halt.
The counselling technique is pioneered by a UK counselling & psychotherapy organisation called and you can read their approach to addiction in this book: I would also strongly recommend too, as it runs you through the relaxation and visualisation techniques and adds that bit of extra support.
Here's the link to the site with their publications- you can buy them all direct if you wish.
Best of luck! If I can do it, you definitely can:)

Thanks for all your thoughts and opinions. I agree, you're all right about looking at the reasons why a person turns to food, or trying alternative diets, healthy eating and regular exercise. What I should have explained is I have followed a balanced diet and regular exercise for a year or so now and I have lost weight and feel healthier for it. But I have stopped losing weight now and feel I could do with losing just a few extra pounds but I cannot seem to shift it. This is when I considered slimming aids, such as weight loss pills. Does anybody have any other suggestions how I could lose these last few extra pounds?
Thanks for all your thoughts, much appreciated.

Hi I found that when I stopped focusing on the need to loose weight it came off. I eat sensibly, and excercise like you.
I find that the way you think has a lot to do with it. This is just my opinion, I'm not saying that it works for everyone, but it helped me. By focusing on the negative, you drawn in more of the same. Try visualising yourself as you want to be. Hold that vision, and bring it to the present tense, as if that is how you are now. I hope you can understand this.
Good luck with everything. [sm=angel_sm030.gif]

It might be worth speaking to a personal trainer to check the exercises you're doing aren't building muscle (muscle weighs more than fat so you may think you're overweight when in reality you've lost fat and toned up well). Also speak to a nutritionist about your intake. :)

Hi to you all
I have had an eating disorder for years now bullemia.
I have tried slimming pills, starving myself and tried to sleep as much as possible so I didn't eat.
None of it worked, I went to the docors and she gave me prozac again no help whatsoever, Ive now ballooned to 15 and a half stone from 10 in 3 years, I'm really unhappy and have been focusing on my studies to try not to eat as much it has helped but I havent been exercising due to being sat at the computer or my head in books.
I really do sympathise with anyone who is over weight and is find their battle difficult.
The only thing I can advise on is please stay away from the slimming tables I bought ephedrial pure about three months ago and ended up nearly killing myself, It works by heating up your body, its white willow and pure asprin with caffeine a real head mess honestly.
My mum didn't know I was taking them but soon everybody could see I was poorly as I was pale, sick, was jumping round like a mad person and then was crying, aching and feeling lost when they were wearing off.
Plese stay way from s;imming tablets anybody wishing to take them think about it really hard, the weight only goes back on when you stop taking them despite all the complications, its really not worth it !

Hi Sayz,
Thanks for clarifying your situation!
What you are experiencing is completely normal, and is what is known as a 'plateau'. Weight loss usually follows the following pattern:
1. You start eating less and exercising more, and lose weight quite quickly at first.
2. About 3 months in, your body begins to adjust to the changes and increase in exercise, and it's metabolic rate begins to settle out and slow down slightly. This is known as 'The Plateau' and usually occurs when you have approximately 10lbs to go.
To overcome the dreaded plateau, you need to vary your exercise routine so that your body's metabolic rate has to raise to get used to a new pattern again. Aim for cardiovascular exercise (increasing the intensity of your workout) and combine that withaweight training programme devised by a qualified person at your gym. Cross training is the key here, so add as much variety as possible, and aim to work exercise into your daily life- you know, the whole taking the stairs instead of the lift etc.
The last 10lbs will be harder to shift, because the closer you are to your ideal weight, the higher you'll have to raise your metabolism[:@]:D

There is an e-mail series I recently received about"7 steps to pH balancing".
Today's comment was about someone who had gained 30 lbs - then tried a low-fat, high protein diet - but after an initial success, the weight went back on.
They claimed a switch to the pH balancing was successful.
I can give you the web page - where you can get the Free e-mail series and other newsletter information - if you wish.
The proof however is in the 'eating' ?
