Bad Coughs

Hi,
I understand there are 2 types of coughs known. 1 is a tickly/itchy cough only within the throat. 2 is chest pains a more heaver cough usually with the flu. I don't have the cold or flu but do have chest pains as well as a itchy throat as well so is a combination of the 2!
Bascially I am looking for a quality cough supplement/medicine try and tested anyone recommend? Really dont want to spend a 3 hour wait at my doctos for something I can pick up in 10 mins at boots.
Thanks.

No one can diagnose or give medical advice online, nor should they attempt to, even if qualified.
For cough mixture, the pharmacist at the chemist should be able to offer advice, and something for you to take.
For chest pains you really should make an appointment to see your doctor.

Ok after a 2 hour wait at the doctors he gave me Antibiotics, which seem to do the job at the moment. I am wondering if each time in the distant future if I get the same problem can I just go in and buy it off the shelf at the chemist? its Amoxicillian.

I have no idea if this works but recently it was recommended to me that Vick's vapour rub rubbed into the feet overnight (cover with socks) is a good remedy for coughs of all types. Perhaps if anyone tries it they will let us know. I would try it myself if I had a cough. Just a matter of time i suppose.

Sharon I'm serious I'm about to roll of the floor in stitches after that bit of advice. Actually your feet??? why your feet?? isnt it supposed to be your chest/throat? and why covered with socks??
Im sorry sharon dont mean to be offensive of anything, but the advice given to you sounds a joke.

Well, it was sensible of you to seek medical advice, though 2 hours seems avery long time to have to wait. Don't they have appointments?
About getting the antibiotic in the future, you could ask the chemist next time you're in the shop, if it's available over the counter, but I would think that's unlikely.
However, you could ring your doctor's dispensary and ask them,or whetheryou can have a repeat prescription if you ring up and ask for one. They may not do this with antibiotics though.
At most GP's surgeries,it takes 48 hours from when you ring up, so as to allow time for the doctor to be consulted and agree to the repeat. I imagine it would be the same pretty much anywhere.
I also imagine the socks are to keep the Vick off the sheets! :D

Covered with socks will help to a) keep the vicks from getting on things and b) help to keep the feet warm and the vicks vapours doing its stuff.
Using it on the feet isn't as daft as it sounds. It can be quite a warm part of the body at night, especially if covered in socks, and will cause a good amount of vapours to be given off.
There are many things that sounds like a joke to some people. However there is a lot of things that many people do not understand.

No offence taken Azim!I've done a bit of research and found this -
So there's no proof, no endorsement, but apparently people think it works! I'm getting a cold at the moment and I normally end up with a cough, in which case I will try it.
BTW, Laura and Giles, I agree about the role of the socks.

interesting idea... and could possibly work in the same way as aromatherapy and essential oils... that oils in Vick (hmm i'm guessing camphor and eucalyptus, amongst others) will absorb through the skin, into the bloodstream.mind you, why not just rub it on ya chest!!! ;)

I found the 'socks' suggestion very interesting. I'd never actually heard of that before, but it sounds like a good idea.:)
Personally though,I would recommend Benylin cough medicine:
You should be able to buy this at Boots.

Answers:

Are you sure, moonfairy? I can remember taking Benylin in the past and it made me feel very strange! Also, Azim, do be wary about taking too many antibiotics; they're not available over the counter for a very good reason. (In desperation I took a course of antibiotics to try and clear up a bad cough I've had since January and I've still got it! Think I'll dig out an old pair of socks and try Sharon's Vick remedy!!:D)

Well, it worked every time for my other 'arf. It was especially helpful when he was taking important exams. And I believe, you can also get a NON-DROWSY type.;)

Re the foot thing - maybe it's supposed to work because - (I may be talking out of my hat here, but.........)- you sweat more through your feet than you do through your chest..........so maybe you can absorb more too. Perhaps the soles of your feet are more permeable.

Moonfairy, your linkWAS to the non-drowsy version! Others are listed below their write up on it.
It's quite possible it has some ingredient in it to which you have a reaction. I take the non-drowsy occasionally at bedtime [which might sound like a contradiction in terms! ;)] and have never suffered any ill effects.
However, the leaflet which comes with the mixture does give quite a number of contraindications, so again perhaps the thing for AzimScot to do is check with his GP as to the suitability of this medicine for him. Or at least with the pharmacist at the chemist, rather than just buying it off the shelf in a supermarket, as one is able to do.

hi all in response for advising medicines for a cough that is stubborn and wontgo, providing you are on no other medicines for other problems its perfectly safe to try natural plant remidies, the first to bring relief would be allens pine and honey syrup, the second is garlic tablets which are narural antiviral, anti inflamatory, decongestants the third product is echinasea to bouild the immune system and prevent further attacks or the problem reaccuring, being as you have already had antiboitics maybe the echinasea would be a good optoin to build the immune system from future coughs colds and virus and being the problem is resolved maybe this information will come in handy for future reference, always check with gp if on any medications.take care xx deb
