Help with insomnia and oversleeping
I've been having trouble sleeping, but at the same time, I can't get up in the morning.
It takes me ages to get to sleep at night, but then when I eventually do, I can sleep for as much as 12 hours even when I'm not particularly tired. If I *have* to get up, I can function perfectly well on 7-8 hours. On days when I don't need to get up, I will set my alarm for 7.30 or 8, wake up feeling like I could easily get up if I had to, but then fall asleep again until 12.
Oversleeping in the morning is starting to become a big problem, because I also suffer from SAD which means I need to make the most of the morning sunlight to function. It's not so bad now that the days are getting longer, but during the winter it starts to get dark only a couple of hours after I manage to get out of bed!
I'm trying to write my dissertation at the moment, and it's really depressing to find that half the day has gone by the time I start my work. The more sleep I get, the more tired I feel during the day. If I sleep through the morning, then I find it really difficult to get any work done in the afternoon because I feel so lethargic. Every day I think to myself: "I haven't got any work done today, but tomorrow I'll get up early and make a fresh start" Of course, it hardly ever works.
The problem is made worse by the fact that my boyfriend is a night person, so he likes to go to bed at 2am and get up late. Unlike him though, I still get tired at around 10-11pm even if I've got up at midday so I can't work in the evenings, I just waste half the day and end up getting depressed.
Can anyone offer any ideas on how to regulate my sleep pattern better?
Answers:
I'm not entirely sure, but my teacher spoke about it on the A&P course today - is it possible that you can have problems with melatonin production/reception? Melatonin is the hormone responsible for our sleeping cycle... check it out: , apparently it's possible to get some prescription Melatonin pills here in uk and it's even easier to get them in us!
I hope it helps
