Hi Bluesparrow,
I have the same problem. I am a nightowl, stay up 'till all hours'! I potter around doing bits and bobs all night, sit down for maybe half an hour, go to bed then wham my mind wakes up. I have been doing lots of study lately and "think of things" when I am lying in bed. Previously I have tried camomile tea, hot milk, hot chocolate, warm bath etc and still I am wide awake. What I try to do is to write down any issues or thoughts I have before I switch off the light and "leave them there" until the morning and I can pick them up then (if that makes sense). A few weeks ago I started exercising regularly again (after a long time) and find that helps as I am physically tired. If any "thoughts" come into my head I try to let them go. The only other thing I could suggest is a relaxation cd that you could play and maybe do some relaxation techniques that will send you off to peaceful slumber. Also the more you worry about not getting off to sleep, then it will be more difficult. Hope this helps.
Blessings and best wishes,
Rachel

hello bluesparrow, can you think if there is something that is worring you, when you go to bed, that usually courses the problem, your mind will be actively seeking ways of solving the problem, and it keeps you awake. i find the herb valerian quite good, take about 1 hour before bed. there are a number of other herbs that could work equally well.
kind regards mike

I keep a blend of essential oils by my bed to use when I'm going through periods of anxiety. It works a treat.

Hi bluesparrow,
You should try to keep your mind calm a least an hour before you go to bed, this will stop all activity in the brain. This is usealy the main reson for people not being able to get to sleep. Also tryMeditating yourself to sleep (in your bed, lying on your back, arms to the side of you), do some deep breathing whilst you do this and you should soon drift off.

Check out the 4-way breathing post under 'spiritual healing' section of the forum. A wonderful exercise to help with sleep.
I would be very surprised if you weren't asleep before you finished the exercise.

I have occasional nights like this when my mind is very active and I think about stuff, usually rubbish, not necessarily worrying. I find that if I let myself start thinking about things when I go to bed, it gets even harder to stop as time goes on, even 15 minutes down the line, thinking can be like a compulsion, it’s very difficult to stop once started, and if I’ve lied awake thinking for a few hours then I’ll only drift off to sleep out of sheer exhaustion because it’s so hard to switch off.
This used to be something of a nightly thing for me, but now it’s only very occasionally because a) I don’t let myself start it’s usual thinking pattern, I immediately go into relaxation mode when I hit the pillow – I meditate by following my breath and always going back to following it if I catch myself slipping into a thought pattern. I also meditate by moving my awareness to other parts of my body, seeing what I can feel but not necessarily thinking about it. b) I only go to bed when I’m tired, which is usually not a problem as I don’t have much chance to sleep during the day, which will always ruin your sleep pattern c) if my mind does start thinking and I find it difficult to stop, I literally shout to myself in my head ‘STOOOPP’. It may sound funny, but it kind of works.
One book that I’ve found helpful is called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It’s not necessarily about how to sleep at night, but it's about the compulsion to think incessantly that affects most people. And it goes beyond that, I couldn’t even begin to explain the scope of the book, but I found it helped me to become aware of my ‘mind chatter’. I wouldn’t normally recommend reading a book at night (or watching the news), but this is a good one, it’s written in such a way that it makes you feel calm and still.

the first thought that comes to mind is "WHY WORRY WHEN YOU CAN PRAY", thoughts create our reality, the key is to focus on the thoughts that empower you, stay focused on your needs, goals & desires, and let them go, visualisation helps with this, remember if you worry a lot, then the universe will only reflect that back to you, but if you think positive thoughts, realising that you are the master of your life, which you are, then allow your thoughts to focus on your needs & goals to be fulfilled, see them being fulfilled in your mind,if its money you worry about at night, focus & visualise money coming into your life with ease & grace, then allow them to go, if its relationships then visualise them coming into harmony in your daily lifestyle, then let them go and so forth, what I have learnt is that when we cant sleep its due to concerns and worries, we are trying way to hard, be it to better ourselves or our life, when in truth we are the masters, the universe is our oyster, it will reflect our thoughts back to us, so think positive emporing thoughts all the time, at night work with affirmations or even try sleep CDs, I have a few that may help if you wish to PM me, you might wish to share with us, what kind of thoughts you think at night so we can furthur assist, also, if you trying to find the answer to something in your thoughts, then remember ask your heart, as within you are all the answers you need. also I have watched a great movie, that talks a great deal about our thoughts, its called "The Secret", its very imformative and may help, if you are interested in seeing this, PM or email me, and before I go, heres a mantra for you to try for the mind "Violet Fire Thy Light Divine, Blaze within this mind of mine, god who gives my daily bread, with violet fire fill my head, Till thy radiance heavenlike makes my mind, a mind of light" violet flame energy is wonderful to work with for transmutation on many levels not just mental. and 1 more, "I AM FREE FROM FEAR AND DOUBT, CASTING WANT & MISERY OUT, SETTING MY MIND FOREVER FREE ON WINGS OF COSMIC VICTORY" Well Must go, hope this helps, purest love & light blessings be with you, SLEEP WELL & BE AT PEACE. Bye now
