Quitting coffee
I've decided to stop drinking it, after realizing it gives me a headache every morning. The headache fades away after about an hour after the coffee. I've slowly cut down from 3 or 4 cups to 1 cup a day. I'm trying to make it weaker strength too. I've been trying to eat healthier for the last few months, and decided that the coffee probably isn't a good thing to hold on to. If I just don't drink it in the morning, I get a pounding headache around noon or 1 in the afternoon, and my hands get a little shaky [&:]
Has anyone else quit drinking coffee? Do you have any advice? Would drinking tea be better?

I've quit lots of times and each time I've gone through a sort of detox like Row mentioned, where I'd get headaches and feel out of sorts for a while. But then it passed, and I felt great! Much clearer. Of course, I never drank more than two cups a day, and usually only one. So if you're drinking 3-4, I think you're wise to cut down first before discontinuing it altogether. You're going through not only detox but withdrawal, and your body is just trying to adjust to the changes, that's all. So give it time. Good luck!!

The headache without coffeeand the headache followingcoffee seem a little strange. What else do you eat and drink around that time of day?

I have a bagel with butter, orange juice and a multivitamin. I've been having that same breakfast for a few years, but have only started having headaches in the last couple of months.

I wondered if it could be low blood sugar , but obviously not.
It just seems strange that you get the headache whether you have coffee or not.
I used to drink coffee non -stop all day, but I have cut it down to 2 normally and 3 cups at weekends, but I honestly don't recall headaches.
What other liquids especially water do you drink?
I know it can be difficult getting to work and drinking a reasonable amount of liquid at the same time

Well, I try to drink about 2 litres of water a day. I used to drink under 1 litre, then a kiniseologist told me to drink at least 2 litres/day. That could be the problem actually.... it's been really warm lately and I do physical work, maybeit's that I'm not drinkingenough water. hhmmm I don't drink anything for an hour or so before I go to bed, so maybe I start off the day a little dehydrated, and the coffee just adds to it. Here is what I've experienced and learned.Coffee is addictive, when you quit your body misses it. Your brain creates synapses and receptors that are used to finding that addictive substance and when they don't have it or can't find it -- they get POd and you get a headache, depressed, shaky, foggy thinking....:D Okay, having a little fun with this is all... But seriously, it's true, it is addictive.
What I did all of the times I quit was to mix 1/2 and 1/2 of decaf with regular and cut down for a week or so. Then I diluted it by half again, and again until I weaned myself off of it over a month or so. I experienced zero side effects doing it this way. Just like in every thing, no one is identical to the next human so follow your body. But with consistency you can get off of caffeine. Just remember it is in other food sources so be careful what you eat. Look it up on the Internet.
Here is an article I just got from a website named Women to Women -- funnily enough, it is on caffeine!
IMHO though, I think your sudden onset of headaches is not from coffee. I think it's either hormonal or a food allergy. You can have a sudden onset of one, most likely culprits are wheat, egg, and sugar. It sounds to me like when that food hits your system, your system is telling you something is amiss. These things are soooo subtle though, they can be hard to pin point. Tedious but effective is food elimination.
Best wishes, J

It's the sugar! I had a cup of chai tea this morning, with no milk or sugar, and Ididn't get aheadache. No withdrawal symptoms this afternoon either. Then I read American Woman's post, and went and put a spoonful of sugar in my mouth, about the same that I take in coffee, and WHAM! I got a headache almost instantly. So sugar seems to be the culprit. Maybe I can still have my precious coffee in the morning, but I'm going to try to mix in decaf or just make the coffee weaker, with no sugar if I can. I went to that website and answered yes to the majority of the questions to the caffeine addiction quiz [&:]soI think I'llstill try to quit.
Thanks everyone for your help!
