Strange problem

Not sure quite how to describe this, but I'll try.
The past couple of weeks something odd has been happening to me.
I'll be sitting at my computer and suddenly, for no reason I start feeling really strange. I can't really describe the sensation except that it feels a bit like a panic attack.
My palms and feet get really sweaty, I feel really insecure and I feel like I'm going to pass out or even die. My hands and body start trembling, sometimes quite dramatically. After lying down for a couple of hours, it usually passes.
I don't think it's stress-related, because it happens randomly without any apparent cause.
I'mnot on any medication at the moment. Any ideas?

Hi Daz,
Sure sounds like anxiety to me -- I'm not a mental health expert or anything but in addition to contacting your doctor, why not take a look at some info on the www regarding this condition? Actually I'd be willing to bet there are threads on panic attacks and anxiety right here on HP. Why not try a search in here as well?
I don't believe the stress related to panic attacks happens at the same time as the PA necessarily, rather it's a symptom of life situation(s) in general. I'll bet if you thought about it there are issues causing concern, worry...
I'm certain someone will have some good advice for you. Best wishes for a positive outcome with this -- love, prayers and <hugs>.

It could be pretty much anything - stress being a possibility - are you feeling safe and secure at work? It could also be worth going to your gp about this as it can be a symptom of something else - perhaps something which requires treatment - but could equally be as simple as you're missing a couple of key nutrients from your diet. Are you eating ok? Would you benefit from seeing a dietician (your gp may be able to refer you). Do you have any other symptoms during the day - does it always happen at the same time - emotionally how are you in the lead up to these episodes - and following..
Don't panic though - no need for that - just get yourself checked over when you can and then take it from there..

Thanks for the advice.
I forgot to mention that my heart rate increases quite considerably during these attacks. I've also noticed that around the same time I get slight twinges around the glandular area of my neck, and sometimes other places in my body.
The 'panic attack' feels like a rush of adrenaline around my brain area, that's probably the best way I can describe it.
I'm seeing a specialist tomorrow as I had a mental health problem about a year ago, and I'm just about to be discharged from their day care. He might be able to help.

I'm no medic either but it may be worth watching your sugar levels it sounds similar tothe symptoms associated with a hypoglycaemic crisis. Don't panic tho ask your g.p. the stress of not knowing and speculation is often much worse that the cause. Chin up **** an I'll beam ya some joy just for good measure eh. (big smile) jono

Have you noticed any similarities at all between what might havebeen on your screen at the time of these feelings?

A bit more info on this problem.
It's happening frequently now, just five minutes ago was the last time. I saw United 93 (a very intense movie if ever there was one) at the cinema last night, and the problem lasted for about an hour!
It could well be excitement or tension that causes it. At first it didn't seem to have an apparent cause, now I tend to think differently.
I don't think it happens in my sleep, although it's difficult to tell.
My medical specialist seemed to draw a blank on it yesterday, but he did prescribe me anxiety tablets, which I'm picking up on Monday. I can't remember their precise name. Began with a D I think.

Diazepam possibly?

Just a thought that came to me- if you don't feel as if you're currently going through a stressful period then perhaps it could be PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)?
If your health specialist drew a blank then I'd definately seek a second opinion.

Answers:

Yes, that's it.
I'll certainly seek a second opinion.

Its certainly very curious, especially if its most set off by sitting by your computer - perhaps you are having a reaction to the radiation from your computer? perhaps a stone/crystal may help to deflect this?
Its a shame you have been given Diazapam/valium - it will really only dull the senses - not really get to the heart of the problem.
One thing that striked me that in Homeopathy it sounds like an Aconite state:
"A panic attack that comes on suddenly with very strong fear (even fear of death) may indicate this remedy. A state of immense anxiety may be accompanied by strong palpitations, shortness of breath, and flushing of the face."
I would also recommend having recovery remedy at hand.

Hmmm, well I don't think it's computer radiation, because it happened the other day when I was in bed, trying to get to sleep.
It was quite a severe attack too, I felt absolutely terrible. I was trembling like never before, my heart was pounding madly. Felt like I was going to die.
I went to the doctor about it yesterday, and she gave me a second opinion. Gave me an ECG (which proved normal), took my blood pressure (normal) and took some blood to be tested. I'll get the results next week.
So far though, since Saturday, it hasn't happened. I'm crossing my fingers.

Sounds like there might be a mental cause... if your GP drew a blank, how about a psychiatrist?

Answers:

Unfortunately, the health specialist that I went to see first WAS a psychiatrist. And he drew a blank.

Hi sorry you are feeling unwell, the symptoms could fit any number of things , possibles being a 'Hypoglycaemic attack', try a medium GI Food..or two lol they release energy at a slower rate... It is possible that you are experiencing 'Infrasound' from your pc and surroundings... Google that its quite interesting. lol..

Another possibility is Thyroid related.... usually over secretion this 'speeds everything up' makes your heart beat faster, increases respirations, has a knock on effect too with the release of Adrenaline.. the flight or fight hormone. I'll bet that you feel shaky and exhausted afterwards... Ask the doc to check yout T4 levels..
Just for info...
Diazepam is a mld tranquillers & Muscle relaxant, a low dose of 2 -5mg once a day may break the cycle of your discomfort.. but its not a long term answer...indeed it is quite addictive and makes one feel drowsy, so it will affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Suggest you take frequent breaks from the pc...get up walk around get some fresh air.. really a natuaral approach is preferably to drug therapy....Hope this is of help

Thanks Bluelight.
I visited my support worker yesterday and she gave me some literature about dealing with panic attacks. That's what she seems to think it is.

Some people are 'sensitive' to the radiation from a PC monitor or just the rapid flickering of a flat panel monitor. As you've hadepisodes in other situations, then they are not a single cause.
It's likely that there isn't asingle cause, but a collective build upfromvarious sources.
What I'm trying to say is that it isn't necessarilyallpsychological as some may suggest. There are many people that are hypersensitive to all manner of substances and environmental factorsand when enough of them come together or too much exposure to a few, then that pushes the system into emergency survival mode.
Another possibility is a previous very stressful event may have left your nervous system on full alert i.e. from a road traffic accident. Some just get stuck and need some help to remove/ reduce the strain patterns in their system, otherwise they can remain the proverbial 'bunny rabbit trapped in the car head lights'. It then doesn't take much further stress to push them into panic mode again.
Hope that helps - Andrew.
