Aluminium link to Alzheimers
Hi All
Apologies if you have had this discussion before I joined the forums, but I was wondering what people know about the link between Aluminium and Alzheimer's Disease.
Naturally I have heard of this over the years, but not been particularly perturbed about it as I don't use aluminium pans.
Anyway I read this week that research from Reading University suggests that deodorants and antiperspirants all contain aluminium, which as well as increasing the risk of Alzheimers, can also increase the risk of breast cancer as the aluminium penetrates the skin. I don't know how true this is, but I for one use a roll - on deodorant every day and would really like to know if they do indeed contain aluminium. According to the article I read there is an aluminium free deodorant called Green People's Deokrystal in an aerosol spray costing a whopping £5.84. I wonder if this is a con to make people believe that we all need to pay inflated prices for their products.
What do other people think? Does anybody know if all deodorants contain aluminium, because we might all have to stop using them...... which will make it very unpleasant to be in crowded places in the summer

hi moonfairy - why don't you pop into Lush. The staff are very well-informed about their products, and I use an effective (I hope!) Lush deoderant which doesn't contain aluminium from them.

This news is very old - It's certainly been common knowledge in Australia for about 20 years now about the link between aluminium and alz/breast cancer. In fact I remember being taught about it in health classes in school as a 15 yo.
The best deoderant IMHO is the salt rock deoderants, run it under a tap shake off excess water and then run on your armpits, feet wherever - the rock will last at least a year or two so an investment of £6-8 is certainly cost effective given the time it lasts.
I've bought expensive aluminium free deoderants before and the result is always the same - wet smelly pits by lunch time! LOL So i stick to the salt rocks now. I think i've bought 4 in the last 10 years.
Hope that helps

Hi Sharon
I daren't go into Lush because I want everything in the shop! It's great isn't it.......... must check out the deodorants there.
Hi Emma
I've never heard of these salt rocks but they sound great, do you buy them in health shops such as Holland and Barret, or do you have to find really specialist stores to order them for you, I would like to give them a try
Thanks both

The best ones i've found are 'himalayan salt rocks' do a search on ebay and you will find them. Any good health shop will sell ordinary salt rock deo's but I prefer the himalayan.

Pretty much all commercial deodorants use aluminium.
A few years ago I used to get very itchy armpits, I was forever scratching them, I was allergic to the aluminium in them. I then had to remove the aluminium from my liver (as that was where it had accumulated).
I would seriously recommend everyone to stop using deodorants with aluminium in them. Our bodies are not made to ingest/absorb aluminium and its longterm effects I'm sure cause dis-ease.
I use Avalon deodorant from health food shops and the salt ones too, and I haven't had an itchy armpit since.
With regards to Lush, please check that all the ingredients in their deodorant are natural, they try as much as possible not to use synthetic ingredients however, they will freely admit that not all their products are natural.

Do they have this deodarant in US? Or maybe some other deodarant that is similar?

Good heavens Rosi, I am shocked by your post; aluminium accumulating in your liver, how horrendous for you. I sincerely hope you are recovered from this.
As I mentioned earlier, I knew aluminium was bad for us, but I had absolutely no idea it was in deodorants. I think this information should be publicised more so that everyone realises this. Thank you Aroma for your valuable input.

Hi Ange
I used to use the big crystal rocks but kept dropping them in or on the edge of the bath and smashing them which was getting very expensive. Then I found 'Pit Rok Natural Spray Deodorant' which you can buy in Boots or health food shops and costs £4 ish. It is the salt rock dissolved with other ingredients alum, aloe vera, calendula extract and a few other ingredients (can't find my strong glasses and the print is too small) but no aluminium or alcohol, it comes perfumed or unfragranced. My son prefers the spray because it is easier to use with his hairy armpits, sorry too much info!

I have some different theories around this illness and also in my own life and with clients - I look really in depth in beliefs and the power of beliefs - so for me I ignored it and so stopped it from being a problem for me - hope this helps ;-)
