I would be interested too as i am trying to totally detoxify our house as best i can. We now use Eco products for cleaning but I'm looking for an eco and chemical free carpet freshner - similar to shake and vac but without the rubbish. so if anyone has any proven recipes that would be great.

"Toxic home tour" into Google = nearly 6 million results, of which this is the top of the list:
I hope you find the one you wanted, and thanks anyway for an interesting thread starter - definitely an idea I shall pursue. I shall take a tour! :)
Generally, my nose and lungs tell me if there's a household product, or cosmeticI can't have anywhere near me, but I guess there are some "invisibles" to consider.
BTW, shake 'n' vac is known to cause skin irritation in dogs [&o]

As for a carpet freshener, soda bicarb is the best. You can add a few drops of essential oil to add aroma.
think i might ask for an eco forum on here? I make alot of my own cleaning products(as well as using chemical free) it would be interesting to see what other hpers are doing?

Hi Janetc I dont use shake and vac as i do have a dog and the stuff is far too powerful in scent and i know its not good...
I did think of bicarb and oils but thought the oils would just glob together on some of the bicarb - or is this not the case? maybe i should just try it and see. LOL

The Greenpeace Website has a lot of information about which products are chemical free and safe to use. They also have a tour of the house, which is what you may be looking for:

Personally I buy all my househould cleaning products from a mail order catalogue. They have everything from washing up liquid to toilet cleaner and it really works as well. I have not used bleach or other nasties in my home for over 18 months and have never looked back! PM me anyone who wants more info.

you can make a water spray with bicarb for freshening curtains etc. soda water has always been THE remedy for cleaning up after cats as it deodorises the area and stops them revisting it. if you want to add oil for aroma, just 5 drops in a 500ml sprayer is enough and won't damage fabrics etc.
i also use only eco friendly products that i buy online and they actually work as well as main brand products. been using them for 10 years now and the oxygen bleach is really good.
