Holistics and Statistics!

Has anybody got any articles or websites/pages that has any evidence that complementary treatments work? Or any trials carried out? Anything from a reliable source will be very helpful as need it to re-educate gp's and consultants to a holistic way of thinking next week!:D

Hi Candie,
If you go on internet and type in Doctor/Healer network you will find lots of reliable links with info on healing etc with doctors in mind,
Good luck! I have a meeting with 2 GP's and their practice manager next week to arrange me being attached to their surgery to offer reiki to patients!

Hi Candy
If you can get into the Cochrane review this is what the NHS uses to review research and evaluate all sorts of things. I am not sure how to access it from a remote location but I will try to find out for you. The other source is www.findarticles.com I use this a lot and it is very usful.

As for the 'doctor healer' network - WELL!!! were you reading my mind? We were discussing how to connect with the local group just the other day and it is on my list of things to do! Spookie!
I'll let you know how we get on at the hospital on Wednesday.;)

We really do need to get our heads together on this one!
And no I wasn't thinking of making a shed!
However there is a shed load of eveidence out there in support of various holistic approaches to health & yes I accept that such an approach will not squeeze into their 'gold standard' of quantitative double blind studies.
Anyone can do a simple audit of clients with a simple questionnaire. Will try & come up with something that can be adapted for most things.
In the meantime please search for existing research on your particular therpapy (good & bad, cos we can be critical too & point out flaws, etc).

Hi Candie
Would something like this be suitable?..
Reflexology wins NHS Backing for Multiple Sclerosis in the UK
“The role of complementary therapies such as fish oils, reflexology and tai chi in treating disease are recognised for the first time in of special NHS (National Health Service) guidance published today. The cautious and still only partial endorsement of the possible benefits from such treatments in easing the symptoms of multiple sclerosis comes from the government's clinical watchdog for England and Wales, the National Institute for Clinical excellence...."It says patients should be informed that there is some evidence to suggest’ that some might have benefits, even if there is not enough evidence to make firm recommendations. "But there is no endorsement for other non-orthodox treatments, such as acupuncture, yoga, herbal remedies or aromatherapy. And, in all cases, patients should be encouraged to tell doctors if they decide to pursue complementary therapies. "The Multiple Sclerosis Society has two concerns about complementary medicine: that it is used safely and that patients are no overcharged. Such treatment is not usually available on the NHS, and patients often have to beat the costs themselves." Patient groups welcomed the guidelines, arguing that thousands of people among the estimated 63,000 with MS in England and Wales suffered from a healthcare lottery, although examples of good practice are found in a number of place, including London, Merseyside and Newcastle.

That's exactly the sort of thing we're looking for thanks.
Articles by respected Newspapers, Magazines & Journals and any actual research papers published or unpublished. Just the abstracts would do for starters.

Thank you Waywood!;)

I know it is aromatherapy but have you tried the Aromatherapy Global Online Research Archive (AGORA) http://nature-helps.com/agora/agora.html. There is also the Research Council for Complementary Medicine (RCCM) www. rccm.org.uk, but I think they charge for searches.
Good Luck, I hope it goes well for you.
